That is a brilliant idea... how much are those?
Expensive!
Looks like the pots & jack sockets are mounted directly to the circuit boards, which isn't ideal from a durability/repair perspective. Still, the vast majority of amps are made like that these days.
I agree that when there mounted direct they are probably less durable. But from a repair perspective they aren't too much bother unless the board is a nightmare too remove. I was just thinking the other day why don't they just mount them more traditionally can't be too much trouble surely.

Excellent amp but it's not suited to my needs (punk and harder rock) although it brings the heft! I need grind/overdrive/distortion. I'm not a pedal guy so I do really depend on the amp. So I'm going to get something that can do a bit of grind/overdrive. In hindsight although this blows away the Ashdown abm 500 i had the Ashdown did do harder rock and punk (not that I want another Ashdown) I have amp gas problems! Being a bit of a geek I really like the interesting design class d but with class t switching and a conventional toroidal transformer power section. Very high build quality. And these are fan free! Which I think if your using it at home or studio is great. Also has a very good fx loop. 500w @ 4ohm, 250w @ 8ohm Condition wise it works perfectly zero issues. Cosmetically it's used (not abused) and does have some marks. A very reliable amp. I paid £320 and i collected it, which was a bit of a bargain. now sold that includes postage, insured and tracked etc which is surely a bargain. Uk sale only please. No trades! I really like it. Love the wood choice and although a little different I'm liking the headstock too. I normally hate that single cut style body but I think it works well. One thing though could you put up a sound test without the backing track please. I'm about to ask this on someone's amp test as well as I can't really hear the intricacies etc over a backing track.
-
I really liked that. Very cool.
-
Very nice inside clean and uncluttered probably easy to manufacture and easy to fix if something where to go wrong. Looks very well thought out. Probably a very reliable unit.
-
Well I kinda like the headstock dare I say. Hate the rest of it though. I don't know how they get away with designing such bland basses and charging that much. And it looks like something from the 80s
Not if you're in Status Quo. Seriously though, I think it would be a very good exercise. It would certainly focus the mind, stop you from automatically playing what you usually play from muscle memory and make you think hard about note choice and placement. Nothing to stop you from being very groovy either, that is if you're very groovy anyway...
I can half see where your coming from. -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQCSg8p8bbM
I knew it would be slapping I just knew it turned and it off literally 10 seconds in. The beef I have with slapping is, while I find it very cool when done well and appropriately it gets boring real quick it's actually banned in my house no really ask any bc member who has tried it here, so slapping on one string over and over is going to make me violent. I'm still of the opinion that one string is utterly pointless and a waste of effort. Two strings you can make work although why make things harder for yourself I don't know. What next basses with more than 4 strings!? -
The vast majority of songs I was playing during my time with a classic rock covers band could have been done on a 2-string bass (E and A). I even used the Altansia Solitaire for a couple of songs with them once. Stig Pedersen of DAD manages pretty well with just a 2-string:
Yes that's two strings, but one string is a bit pointless -
Ever met a famous musician…. but not realised at the time?

Yes a funny story. I was visiting London years ago in my teen years I don't think I was really old enough to be in a pub I was probably 16 or 17. My dad and step mam wanted to go shopping before the shops closed I didn't so they give me a few quid to go look around the area. But what I was interested in was this pub with music coming out and there were a lot of people there and some door staff. So I said I will go get a coke in there. Somehow feeling brave I managed to get served for a pint (result) it was packed and the only table and seats were near the band. So I went and sat down rather naively. Anyhow the guy singing at the front playing bass kept looking at me and stopping, making fairly friendly jokes at my expense things like "am I comfortably there" and "do I know who he is" etc etc which got a few laughs. I'm thinking (with all of one pint of fosters in me) who is this guy thinking he is all that. Anyhow at the end of the set i wanted another drink but the bar was packed and this guy gets off the stage and I follow him to the bar as the crowd parts for him, I notice he is getting a lot of attention from women. Anyhow I find myself next to him and he starts chatting with me asking where I'm from etc and he gets my a pint. I'm really happy with this and feeling very grown up and thought it was cool he blown off these women who were desperate for his attention to chat quickly with me. I didn't get to finish my next drink as I was found by my dad and step mam who weren't to happy especially as they couldn't get in first of all and second I should not have been drinking. Wasn't till halfway to Hastings I thought sh*t that was Martin Kemp. Years later my mate who didn't believe me asked him about this on Twitter he couldn't remember it though (surprise surprise) and my mate still does not believe me but it is true. -

Seriously tho what can you actually do with that? Two strings is pushing it but what can you do on one string? -
Who is the fret expert in the North East or Yorkshire?
Twincam replied to 2elliot's topic in Repairs and Technical
Do you actually need them replaced or leveling, re crowning and polishing? Either of those I can actually do and have done for bc members who will vouch for how well my basses play. I have pics of my work, also I'm very quick normally takes 3-4 hours for a full fret leveling, or a day for A full fret replacement etc. So in general you can either wait and watch or pick up the following day. I actually specialise in making bad or very worn frets good and polished to a proper mirror finish. -
If I'm selling a bass I put the relief measurement or say its fully setup or something to that effect. I do see many ads with "stright neck" I just take it too mean the relief isn't bad and the neck is in good condition.
-
I've been thinking about the question. I will never say never but my one and only current bass (Jim Fleeting custom) is close to perfect for me, I'm seriously thinking that unless I had a lot of spare cash for another custom bass then I shall keep it. Interesting that the original owner had a lot of input on its design and I've been told chosen all the woods himself. But for some reason he chosen to sell it. I don't think I could have that much involvement then sell it on.
Thanks for the side-swipe, old chum. 'Crap', indeed..! Harrumph..! ... Remind me of the original 'working title' of this subject again, please..?
If I'm going down I'm taking someone with me! Haha!

A lovely looking mini rig. How is it volume wise?

Well I see I'm at least drawn in last place with my fav piece this month currently!. So that might suggest my taste in noodles and my noodle making is crap haha.
Hi Mel Most of the usual suspects have already been mentioned. My starting point for pickup height is usually 4mm bridge and 5.5mm neck so with the adjustment you've already made (assuming neck pup height is OK) it is unlikely to be excessive magnetic pull. The thing that makes me wonder is that the same string and fret will vary between plucks and the tuners sometimes act in reverse. That does not fit the normal pattern of tight nuts, bridge, etc.. It fits with duff strings but you've eliminated that. So a couple more things to check relating to the stability of the neck: 1. What is the neck relief like? And is it stable, that is, consistent each time you measure 2. The neck bolts may be tight, but is the neck secure and properly seated. That is, with the strings off, does the neck move in its seating? Andy
Indeed. I didn't see your post before mine. These are things I would look into.
-
Interesting. I bet if the bass is infront of me I would get to the bottom of it in 5 min. A out the box thought. Is the truss rod tight? Sometimes you can get correct relief with it fairly slack neither putting any bow forward or back on the neck. The trouble is different environments or holding the bass in different positions or touching the neck can have a slight effect on the relief, thus giving you tuning instability. This is cured by just tightening the truss rod ever so slightly with the strings fully tuned to pitch.
FWIW the Microbass is rated at 45W through its own 8in speaker. It goes pretty loud at home, and it would be fine for an acoustic folk jam, but no way would it compete with a drum kit. Electronically, the Kala puts out about the same signal level as my '73 P-bass, at least when I'm playing it. Acoustically, it's very quiet, and the E-string is all but inaudible. Yes it is fun - it's bonkers that such a titchy instrument can produce such a big sound. Full disclosure: I've noticed that the fret ends are a bit sharp. I'll have to dig out my Dan Erlewine book and read up on how to fettle it.
Tape the board and use a flat file preferably with a safe edge to gently round the edges if you do it gentle enough and don't touch anywhere else on the fret you won't have to do anything else maybe a little polish up. Or use a ladies nail file (a metal one) as they tend to be fine.

Wow well that worked well just tested the cab although not at very high volume I did turn it up a bit. The booming has totally gone. It's very clear while also seemingly going a lot deeper than it did originally and then with the mk1 porting lol. Reacts well with eq changes etc. However transporting and not getting laughed at might be an issue.
