Personally I WANT MORE string tech and development. I'm not sure HOW LONG I CAN contend with horribly unbalanced-sounding flats, rough loose-tolerance Rotosounds and other dead, high-tension strings sets at exorbitant prices. The more I think about it the more I can only HOPE that strings WILL GET better over time, with computer technology and finer machining, tolerances and material quality.
Altered for my amusement haha. But I agree with your original post.
Bass GAS has disappeared over the last 6 months or so since i discovered Stingrays. Partly i suspect because i have tried most on my hit list over the last 5 years since my return to playing and to have been fortunate enough to be able to afford to pick something up if it really appeals and flip it if i find something i prefer later. I have been through 3 Spectors, a Fender Blacktop Jazz, a Yamaha BB and just have a mild hankering for a Warwick but my current Stingrays and a Sandberg seem to have sorted me out to the point of not bothering to really look anymore. Cab GAS is cured with a couple of Barefaced and amps sorted by GK and hopefully my new Ashdown Evo iv head. Life will be boring now...........
There's still pedals and other fx, strings etc etc
Do you mean like NOS strings, or just used ones?
NOS from whatever era. I know they probably won't be as good as they were or as good as modern strings but just for the curiosity.
-
A very random thought. Can vintage strings be bought? Can they even be used? Would there be a point in even trying?
Glad to read things are back on track for you buddy
Yes it taken some soul searching. Apologies, a diamond ring and flowers. Plus knowing my own faults.
I often wonder who you're trying to kid when I read these threads - we all know that there's no cure for GAS
Haha. Well I have amp gas at the min. I really fancy something ampeg.

Since getting my Jim Fleeting custom, which while not perfect (it's close for me) I do love. I've had zero interest in other bass guitars and it feels weird. For that long I've checked for sale sections or online stock looking at basses, lusting over them, thinking of ways to accuire them and now I have zero interest, although I like to keep an eye on current prices. My gf was relived to hear that. I didn't say "So I guess it's on to amp and accessory gas" but I wanted too, we are only just back together didn't want to spoil it haha.
Yesterday I opened the box on a new vintage style bass, bought mail order from a seller with a great reputation and I have no wish to "name and shame". The description of the bass I bought included the term "b-stock", so as per the description I expected that there could be signs of use and such. The bass looks great. Nice tone, but low volume. The pup was set low, so it looks like a setup is in order. I checked the neck relief and it was a touch large, so I pulled out the supplied Allen key and it took a turn or so as the double action truss rod was loose. Then the key slipped in the socket. I tried a few other Allen keys and thy either didn't fit, or they slipped. The question, dear friends, is do I get a refund or do I get another one as a replacement? I'm just nervous of if this is a sign of something worth avoiding?
It sounds like you just need another Allen key. I have both metric and imperial. If you like the looks and tone keep it just find a correct key. Assuming the pup output is OK after adjustment.

Seven female bassists who helped shape modern music.
Twincam replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
Shaped modern music? I think that statement is questionable. But Carol Kaye surely must of had a widespread influence. The rest I'm not sure about. I think Kim deal and Tina Weymouth have influenced me and therefore probably others. Others while being very good bass have have in my mind not been big influences. While the three I've mentioned often get included in conversations for having a certain style and being involved in music that was very influential at the time or years later. -
When, we have a decent size stage I will bring along my German made Hofner Club bass, Gibson ES-335 or my Gibson Gold Top Les Paul bass. Most places I play are to dangerous to bring those basses. So I have 2 trusty MIJ Fender Ps for most gigs.
So you take the better basses too the dangerous gigs? Only joking

You could make the switch into an on/off and have the stack taken out and made into separate controls. That would use all the controls then??? Long as your happy with the sound.
-
Too add I do find that versatile basses don't do as good a job as the real thing say a jazz, p bass or stingray or other distinctive tones. To me a versatile bass is like amp modelling they can get close to a tone but not quite the same thing.
-
Weirdly I've noticed on every bass I've had, and they have all been fairly different that I've always dialled in pretty much the same kind of tone and I don't vary much from that. No two basses are quite the same but long as there capable of a good basic well rounded tone I'm happy.

Lovely wood colour. Interesting shape. I wonder why some of the electrics are not functioning.

I like that. Pretty cool

Think I may redo mine record it direct then put it on soundcloud as my entry this month has the worst recording quality, its like I recorded it on a wax cylinder lol.
...although, for two dabs per year, that's not really too much of an issue, I'd say.
This is very true. I bought a large bottle as I do setups. But even after nearly a year and many basses the bottle is still at least 90% full. I would definitely go for the boiled linseed oil, but if mineral oil is your thing then buying a bottle from the supermarket will be cheaper rather than buying so called lemon oil although it does smell nice.
-
My old iron is not performing as it should (typically when I need it) so going to buy a decent new one. Needs to be a decent wattage suitable for typical soldering of pots etc and hopefully not too expensive. Any recommendations? Thanks

You should go buy some boiled linseed oil from a hardware store. In my opinion its much better and it will be cheaper and you will get more of it.
AllParts..? Dual 500k pot ... Just connect one if you don't need the ganged pot..?
Looked at this one and discussed it with Kiogon. But I'm slightly concerned about the fit as its really tight in there. I will have a go if the last option though.

Any kind soul on basschat help me find a pot like this in the uk or have one I can buy? Having a nightmare trying to source one. And the old pot is completely kaput. Thanks http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BARTOLINI-Center-Detented-500K-Pot-Potentiometer-CD500KA-NEW-/371123738825?hash=item5668b2d8c9:g:Om4AAOSw7NNUGkgr

Ive found many dead spots are eliminated or very improved by a shim in the neck pocket or better fret work or both combined. But some are just inherent to the neck construction.
How's about this Portrait Of Tracy, then..? ... ... Oh, I'm sorry; wrong topic. I mistook this for the BC Doodle thread. OK, I'll get my coat.
HAHAHAHA!
I thought I'd give this a quick bash - its just a random bass harmonics thingy but its the thought that counts, I suppose! https://soundcloud.com/rikki-boyes/basschat-doodle
Like this and paubass's entry too (very alike but good) both as someone said are very portrait of Tracy.
Cool. It has a nice Talking Heads vibe - a good steady bass line that would make a good song foundation
Thanks I like a bit of talking heads. I'm going to have a listen to the rest of the noodles in bed tonight.
I should have said "Why is it surprising to people on this forum that Yamahas are good when I can't recall reading a "Yamahas are crap" post, ever?"
I had an rbx 170, my 2nd bass it wasn't bad. Very well made and put together. Didn't like the weak pickups or the neck profile. But as yamahas budget model it was pretty good better quality than similar priced basses of the time. Bought from cash generator for 65 quid delivered (mint condition) sold a few weeks later for £110.
