Been here before...going on a hiatus?
martthebass replied to AndyTravis's topic in General Discussion
Your mileage may vary Al...... What if Andy sells his amp for £1000 today and decides to buy the replacement new amp in one years time for £1200? If I'd sold a EBMM Ray 3 years ago I would have got about £6-700 to buy a used one now would cost me about £1000, a new one around £2000. -
Been here before...going on a hiatus?
martthebass replied to AndyTravis's topic in General Discussion
I think we've all been here at one time or another Andy. I took a break during the formative years of my family life and when I was jetting all over the world with my job. Got back into it when time became more available and when I felt more focussed to get back into music. My old adage has always been 'if it ain't fun and you don't need to do it, then don't do it'. Nothing wrong with taking a break, do something else, become a man in lycra on a Sunday morning - whatever floats your boat. Keep some gear back so that you're not starting from scratch because the BC stats show that most come back to it at some point and start (back)up costs outweigh what you'll make on selling. This place will still be here when you decide to come back, enjoy your break Andy. -

Big thank you to Chris at Smooth Hound - sent me a new plastic back cover for my transmitter unit when mine broke. No questions asked and within a couple of days - great service. -
I'll send mine back then as it's straight lol

Lazy response from RIC. I must have got lucky, mine was nice and straight and the bezel went on without problem.

As you say that's a shame. There's a fair bit on the interweb on this problem (or they used to be); the bridge was a common place for the problem and Rickenbacker blamed roughness on the underside of the bridge but I don't think they managed to sort the problem this way. From what I saw it looked as if the paint had not adhered to the wood and basically de-laminated. It was particularly prevalent on Jetglo and I think Midnight Blue (I was very careful to check my mid blue 4003 and, touch wood, it's been fine) and seemed to be in batches which led those affected to conclude issues with the paint curing process. Also no problem with clear coated (fireglo, mapleglo) so looked to be an issue with the base colour coat. Somebody might come along who knows more about this than me and can correct any errors I've spouted above.

That's a shame Delb, hope you get sorted. IMHO you still need to be careful with the solid paint finishes, I know it's a few years back (problems with the UV cat process?), but even in 2010-2012 RIC were having problems with paint lifting off especially around the bridge area. Even the slightest paint issue on a new bass and I'd be sending it back for replacement. As Jonse said, 'classic Rickenbacker QC'.....so when you get a good one hang on to it.

Yes Delb, you have to do that or you are officially a pillock ;-)

Unfortunately a new acquisition means something has to move on. I’ve had this bass for about 10 years, it was bought for an 80s project but it was only used on stage a couple of times sadly. It’s got the lowest action of any fretless bass I’ve ever owned and will effortlessly produce the mwaaah we all seek. It’s the 2eq version which IMHO works better on the fretless Ray than the 3eq. This is a 2001 model and is in fantastic condition with no dings, cracks or chips to be seen, even the tip of the headstock is good. I suspect the bass has spent the majority of its life as a closet classic - it certainly has with me. The neck is nicely figured with a bit Birdseye and flame going on. Comes in the standard EBMM case which is in good condition with no cracks/damage whatsoever. I’d prefer collection (Yorkshire, East Mids) or meet up on this one but will entertain courier collection if arranged by the buyer. The pics are iPad sadly but I can arrange something better if required. Update: I will consider trades but only 4string fretted. I'm pretty picky but I can only say no eh?

Had a few and all have been fine on a strap.

Got a 2010 in this very same colour Delb. Fortunately it doesn't suffer from the dreaded paint bleed. Stick the bezel on and you're sorted! Very nice bass mate.

It was called Aluminum before it was called Aluminium (and initially Alumium) - You have Sir Humphrey Davy to blame for that. Useless science fact of the day.
-
After many years I've come to the conclusion that, like wands, the bass chooses the wizard....
-
Maybe this is why I haven't moved on from the 70s and 80s
-
Think you file this one under 'no loss'. Much better to be part of a band where you're appreciated.

They are the same in as much as they both have strings and pups and make a bassy noise. Comp and boarding school are both schools that (sort of) provide education. Anyway...as you were. -

Yup, it's one of the good ones - doesn't get used in the current band though (Mustangs - go figure?). I'd love to buy the Stealth but the run of new bed, new tumble dryer and new washing machine ('Has to be a Miele' - the wife) has put paid to that! -

That's the one Frank!

Oooh, never heard that. Nah I was referring to the original album version. I like the way the bassline subtly changes after the lead in and changes the whole feel of the song.
