Morning and welcome! Should you be working

Is there a reason for the apparent dislike for active basses...
ped replied to Rocker's topic in Bass Guitars
I prefer active. Less noise, more flexible - funny when people say there's too many knobs and it's confusing... if you can work a toaster you can learn the controls on a bass guitar -

That's great, please pass on my thanks. Some new sites for me to check out there, too.

I've had to file down bridge saddles on many basses from lots of top manufacturers. I like my action super low and often the bridge just won't go down far enough. I tend to file it down below what I require so I can use the grub screws to set it exactly and leave me with some adjustment in both directions. I'm used to neck though basses where the fretboard is only marginally higher than the body of the bass so only very low set bridges will do the job. My fave is the Schaller 3D.

Woah the Jamhub looks amazing. Exactly what I needed at my old house... great design.

With my new toy (Tecamp Pleasure Board) and headphones, I can achieve the perfect mix in my headphones and feel like I'm standing in front of (or more specifically 'on') a huge bass rig. Nobody else can hear it unless they're in the same room in which case, after playing with my headphones off, it sounds like a muffled boxy speaker at very low volume. I don't need to do this because of noise levels as my neighbour is the other side and basically deaf, but I much prefer the feel and control I have using this setup, and like Mingsta says above, I enjoy playing more when I know I'm not disturbing anyone. Also with an amplifier everything in my office rattles at different frequencies which drives me dotty.

I have a 5 minute slot in the lavatory where I accept handshakes from fans. That way I'm right next to a basin and airblade. I ask them to wash first.

I'd be interested to try them. Elixir strings were a revelation for me and I can make a set last nearly a year. They suit me down to the ground. I was sure that Gore who make the coating had patented the process of coating the string once it has been wound so other competitors had to coat theirs then wrap the string. Maybe that's not true as these sound like a similar process. I have also tried coated strings by Roto, D'addario and Warwick and none were a patch on the Elixirs, so I presumed it was due to the patented process.

Young lads with some great basses and great playing.
That's pretty obvious. Blue
Great, ok. So you also accept that basses sound different? And that those differences can be interpreted as 'good'? -
I will never understand why some of you guys think it's a particular bass that sounds good

There are certain places or songs where the sound of my Hofner is a perfect match.
Ok! im glad you don't understand you either! -
My German made Hofner Club bass sounds a lot different than my Fender MIJ P basses.
Question - do you like the sound of the actual instruments, if you played the exact same pattern on each? -
How I sound is a result of how much I practice and learn and ultimately own as a part of my playing skill set. Those with a high level of ability are going to sound great on a Ric and they will sound great on a Jazz as well. If you lack ability no bass is going to make you sound good. Take the marginal player that buys a Music Man bass, he's still going to sound marginal. Now, I will say that buying that Music Man bass might be the catalyst that encourages that player to invest more time and structured study into the craft. Ultimately making him a better player and obviously sounding better. Blue
The basses themselves sound different. Am I wrong? -
How much does it weigh? I like that idea a lot. For the combination number, these locks normally have a tab on the inside that you pull out (or in) set the number to your chosen one then reset the tab to make your new number effective.
I see ok thanks, I'll have a look at it a bit more closely. The case is very light actually, all aluminium. Probably weighs about the same as an instrument.
If it opens and closes OK, 0.0.0. is probably the default number. Anyway, if you close it and move the numbers and it won't open you could treat it as a Christmas puzzle. Not to many permutations there.
Haha well I've gone with the safe option and applied gaffer tape to said combination lock.

Has anyone here converted a 4 string to a 5 string?
ped replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
I've seen it done on a bass which I guess wasn't available as a 5 (it was some sort of Rick). Guess it would be fine if you don't mind the tight spacing. -
Here I am with Patrice Vigier himself... really lovely chap (well, we both are...). I showed him a pic of my '88 Passion and he said, quite sincerely, 'Thank you for looking after it'
Lovely bass mate..always liked Vigiers but alas have never played one. I'd love to try a fretless version of your bass.
Thanks, I had a fretless Passion or a few years and really enjoyed it, I had to sell it in the end to pay for 'other things' - mine was a series 3 model, with the 10% graphite neck. Really nice, but I really want a Series 2 100% carbon necked one, which are again very rare (although coincidentally I have a lead on one I'm looking at buying soon)
