  1. It's one of the best things about a good 70s jazz I think - that rattle just sounds so sweet, and with a super low action you can go from bury to kind of a nailed clank which sounds especially good when it's just hitting a limiter. David controls that rattle really nicely, sprinkling it on some grooves like sugar on weetabix. Very addictive sound IMO. I can take or leave a 60s spring jazz sound - never really been happy with that tone.
  2. Another track:
  3. How sweet is the bass on this tune. Bassist is David Barard who is a tone hero of mine. I first heard him playing with Dr. John and was blown away by his 70s Jazz Bass sound, to me it exemplifies everything I like about that sound with its open treble and clanky bottom end. I've finally got around to learning this tune and thought I'd share it because it's such a nice groove. @bubinga5 I think you'll like this album! Barard plays a Sadowsky and sounds pretty much straight to desk with light strings or at least a fairly heavy touch and low action. I love the fret rattle and the way the notes sound slapped when he digs in. I am able to get this bang on with my Celinder but my playing is nowhere near as tight! I think he's on Facebook actually so I might try to contact him, seems like a cool guy.
  4. Also here https://www.herrickpickups.com/products/custom-covers-parts/ Tempted to get one too!
  5. Pretty sure I saw one at Bass Direct

    Jazz

    Absolutely love this jazz 🥲
  7. My advice - if it doesn’t sound great with everything flat, it won’t sound greater with a pre. Sweeping statement I know but you have to start off with a great core tone.
  8. Guess who bought a pair of these two days ago 😑
  9. The problem is, I think, that the website shows the bass as 'sold' if someone buys it online, but if someone calls up to buy it then it'll show as in stock until someone manually updates the inventory. I had the same worry when I bought a bass I was desperate to find. I paid online and called the next day to check if I was indeed first, half expecting that the item was gone already. I was lucky but it was hard to sleep that night!! Just tell yourself that the bass could have been a dog and the right one will come along eventually...
  10. It’s a weird thing when buying headphones, it’s a bit of a gamble and you can tell pretty much instantly if you like them or not. And they differ so much.
  11. Nice, would love this amp!
  12. I've been a headphone bassist for a long time now - at home or in the studio I always use headphones (along with a backbeat and/or a teacup bass board) and live I often use in ears too. I few conversations here got me thinking I had maybe got too comfortable with my usual cans, which are some Bose AE2W units with the wireless bit removed. I've been really happy with them and know what I hear is what I sound like. Recently though I read through some threads on here and got talking to my friend who's studio I normally play at and mentioned the Beyerdynamic DT770 range. Turns out he uses them for drum monitoring and in fact last time I was there I actually wore them when I had a go on the drums. So in classic Basschat fashion I ordered some (80 ohm version), despite being perfectly happy with my Bose cans and they arrived today. Pleasingly, my basses sound pretty much the same through these as the others. However I am able to turn my treble up past normal limits without it sounding as harsh, which is particularly noticeable on my jazz bass. There's so much treble on tap with that bass that I don't think anyone could ever use it on max, but even at extreme settings it seems more musical. Just looking at the What HiFi review of the Bose units seems to back this up, where they say they 'struggle to stay poised at higher (and lower - although I've never had an issue) frequencies' but otherwise deliver a detailed sound. The main difference is that I feel there is more 'space' around the music when I play along. It's hard to describe but it's a bit like I'm playing along with the music spread out over a wider soundstage and I can as a result her what I'm doing (badly) and it doesn't all sound so centred. It's marginal but after a/b testing both headphones (I am able to have both plugged in so I can switch quickly) it really became noticeable to the extent that using the Bose units felt like a step backwards. I think I'd have been perfectly happy with the old cans forever and I know the law of diminishing returns is never more obvious than in hifi gear (and the Beyerdynamic and Bose units are about the same price even though the Bose ones are long since discontinued) but it's an incremental step forwards which I'm really happy with, as I wasn't expecting to feel like I needed to change anything. The build quality and comfort are better, certainly. Nice thick cable and solid construction. They're a little bit tighter on my head than the others but I've just been playing for an hour and a half and quickly you forget they're on. And I think they sound fuller at lower volume which is nice because I tend to have my levels pretty low. Thanks for the recommendation BC!
  13. Random thread resurrection bit I've been playing along with this clip with my other basses to make a comparison video Interesting to read this - I didn't notice and now see what you mean but it highlights how I just play along with things without knowing what I'm doing. I keep meaning to learn more!
  14. Hey listen if you aren’t interested in a thread there’s no need to comment! 😂 (I’ll show myself out)
  15. Lovely! I've never noticed before how the Sabre bridge is a mixture of the Stingray and G&L saddle lock bridge!
  16. Nice idea but I prefer a vintage model
  17. Sorry you'll have to write that down and pop it in the post
  18. That was my impression too - however I find these superb for bass, and know that what I hear through my headphone rig at home sounds as near as exactly like what I sound like when recorded and played back through various systems. Musically I find these pretty neutral; they replaced a set of Grado SR80s that I gave up on because my wife could hear them when I was using them in the lounge and I found hairs getting into the diaphragm made a rattling noise and they needed constant plucking!
  19. Xxxx Xxxx to you thank you very much
  20. Here’s my signature strap 😂
  21. I’ve thought about that and may still do it. I haven’t had time to look into it though but no reason why it couldn’t be done, if I don’t get enough preorders then they don’t get made
  22. I recommend going on Etsy and finding someone to make you one the exact length you want. I had a button hole either side of my chosen length so it has some adjustability if I need it but like you I like the simplicity of a fixed strap without a buckle
  23. I don’t think it will make a difference to a buyer.
  24. Tbh I don’t really notice much of a difference between digging in and slapping. When I get really comfortable with an instrument and a bassline my hand moves around and I’ll slap some notes and use all the expression I can muster - in the mix that doesn’t always sound like ‘slap bass’ per se. I think ultimately when it feels natural it sounds natural.
