I've got a "pointy, is it good for metal?) Dean bass which I bought cheap for a laugh. I'ts got very bright strings and a huge sound on it and when I play it I feel like John Entwistle. Trouble is, I don't sound like J.E. :-) EDIT: Or to be more precise, while the tone is vaguely reminiscent of J.E., the playing certainly isn't.

They've done well. I also have a great respect for what they've done. Nobody does it quite like the Quo.

After leaving it in it's gig bag for some months, I decided to try to "bond" with my 5 string yesterday. I was rather surprised to find the D string flapping loose. Refitted it and tuned it, started merrily noodling away and there was a clunk and the D string was once again flapping loose. The bridge is bent and cracked. Having googled it, it seems a common problem, but the body of the bass is recessed by a couple of mm, and that suggests that it will need to be a specific bridge to keep the string height correct. The stock bridge appears to be an Accu-Cast B125. Anybody repaced a bridge on an SR with something different??? Thanks

Mike, further to our conversation a week ago I had pretty much decided that this was what I was after, but I couldn't find one in stock anywhere near me to try. The Walnut looks beautiful. Let us know if you go for one, slightly concerned about string tensions though.

Old git, stiff hands, very little practice outside band rehearsals, too much else to do! Would love to be Jack Bruce but it ain't gonna happen. Very happy with what I'm doing though, having dabbled most of my life, finally got further than ever before and enjoying it. However, because my hands are a bit stiff, I think there's a touch of arthritis there, and my hands are big, but the fingers not particularly long and the co-ordination isn't wonderful, I have settled into a style where I move position instead of reaching for the note with hand span. Lots of sliding, often on a fretless, and I quite like it. Also, I suffer badly from having a bass on my shoulder for any length of time, a lighter bass would be good. I have no major problems with this style of playing, it is, after all, just me being myself..... BUT, I can't help wondering if a short scale would help me move around a little more easily. I'm sure there are powerful arguments for and against, and I'm aware that my beloved fleet of 34 inchers would become redundant should I jump ship. TBH I fancy buying a cheapo EB0 just to try short scale for a while. Thoughts please Ladies and Gentlemen Thanks PS, the adverts for shortscale basses often suggest their suitabilities for youngsters, a bit offputting :-( Scaleist???

Thanks chaps, I just wanted to get an idea of what everybody else does. Must admit I've never seen a bass player with a monitor at smaller gigs. Just a matter of making changes until i'm happy with the set up. And I do have wireless, but got out of the habit of using it for rehearsals in favor of a nice red curly lead. Trouble with them is you can't tell how far you can got before the pent up energy propels your amp at you!!!

Soooo.. small venue pub style band playing non heavy oldies. PA is straight out of the ark, so is used for the vocal and foldback for us to hear what he's up to. Instruments are powered by our own backline amps. I am not happy about how I hear myself in the mix, stood in front of my own rig. I'm aware that what I play may well sound rubbish out front, or different at least. I'm thinking I would like a monitor driven from my backline. Am I being a worry guts? Do I just want to be louder than everyone else? Can't see us getting monitors run from the PA any time soon. Thanks

Johannesburg was on a BBC prog that I watched last night coincidentally. I think it was from a concert that I watched on TV in the late 70's and enjoyed very much at the time, but i had largely forgotten him in the intervening years to my shame. Thanks for the thread.
