1. I used to (10 years ago) have jazz DB lessons from an old jazzer. I couldn't get the theory, which is why I gave up. But I had the most joy simply playing along to CDs. Chet Baker stuff ( especially the era when he was doing vocals as well as trumpet) is generally very slow paced and melodic and I found that a really good starting point. Also early big band Jazz like Duke Ellington (eg Take the A train) which will often have blues based structures and so will be familiar to you, TNIT.
2. Steve Miller band was poor. Even when they played his old hit Abracadabra it sounded like a cover version. Plus who was playing the bass? Noone visible so either the bassist was off stage or they were playing to a recording ( which thought wasn't allowed)
3. Currently D'Addario Chromes on my P bass, Alembic s/ s rounds on my, er, Alembic (really nice strings, very smooth) and EB Slinkies on my Wal. Horses for courses but the Alembics are my current favourites
4. Rush and Renaissance both start with the letter 'R' and contain the letter 's'. The similarities are becoming spooky. Whereas Level 42 contains neither. Proof if ever it was needed
5. Can I say that, in addition to seeing Level 42 in 1983 at Oxford Poly, I also saw Renaissance ('the Northern Lights') a few years before that There aren't enough Renaissance threads In fact this may be the first mention of Renaissance ever on BassChat. Fancy that?
6. If I were a more technical bass player, I would say 80s Metallica. But I'm not, in which case I will say Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds after Barry Adamson left them.
7. Would also trade against a MarkBass NYC121 (so I can have a modular MB rig*) wiith cash your way PS, looks like this * this is the only MB cab that exactly stacks under the CMD121P combo, hence I am not after other MB cabs
8. Re-think - with MB combo I don't think I will end up using this so its FS again!
9. Yes please! PM'd
10. Now, that is a birthday present! Very nice looking instrument
11. Thanks Paul. I have them on the way and will hopefully get the chance to try them out this weekend.
12. At least Paul Herman replies to your emails! I sent one a week ago, no reply
13. I'll stick with staring at the curves on JTUK's avatar!
14. Sorry, add me to the 'its a m*nger' camp. Especially don't like the side carving/scalloping on the body. Looks like a Walls Viennetta
15.
Nah mate, you have her, she cant even iron my gig shirt properly.
thats cos she's not used to clothing
16.
If I could change my AV, I would..
Very nice but I would welcome back your old girlfriend!
17.
How does the buyer think a company like UPS or DHL will transport the bass? They will put your bass in the hold anyway so you might as well take it yourself. At least then you reduce the contact with idiots who think it's fun to break the packages!
This did occur to me Chris but I wasn't sure if there are different areas of the hold and differential treatment of couriered packages versus those of passengers. In any case the buyer isn't happy about me brining the bass with me to Finland and he's paying, so courier it is!
18. I do especially like your posts JTUK, can't think why
19. Thanks for that. I don't know much about Presto strings. Will drop slobluesine a PM. Cheers!
20.
Dont forget ive got some shipping boxes if you need them Clarky (yeah, still tying to get rid of them).
Thanks Dave, I have one at home which I think should fit. If not, will be in touch mate
21.
That's a pretty hefty tour schedule Clarky - wasn't it Denmark and Sweden the other week? It's the big push to 'break' Scandanavia yeah?
Errr, something like that. Was Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen in last 2 weeks. Belgium, Netherlands on Thursday and Friday this week. Helsinki next week and Frankfurt week after. Wish it was a music tour - instead I am visiting investment customers of my bank, touting my wares. Not exactly as much fun but pays for my bass addiction!
22. Sold pending payment
23.
Hi Clarky I have dealt with different bass players around the world buying & trading, I would not be too concerned as long as you package the bass adequately.
Thanks yybass! Actually the buyer has just contacted me to request that it not go in the hold so I guess my question is no longer urgent!
24. Looks like I might be selling my Fender Jazz to a Finnish BC'er. By complete coincidence I will be flying to Helsinki on business next week so there is the option that I bring the bass with me and meet the BC'er concerned to hand over. Question is: if I pack the bass the same way I would for a normal Interparcel/ParcelFiorce delivery is this safe? It comes in an old-style (CS tolex, orange lining) Fender hard case and I can pack in a bass-sized cardboard box. Does something going in the hold from a passenger get treated the same as if it was part of a (say) UPS delivery? I am just concerned that if I carry it with me, the bass will emerge in Helsinki airport in pieces as the box has taken a beating
