I'd be up for it. As a [s]Southern pansy[/s] Londoner (in SW London precisely) somewhere in London/Surrey would be good for me

DB newb questions about preamp (eg Fishman Platinum)
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
+ 1 on the Fishman PlatPro, and into front of amp. There are plenty other decent pre-amps, but the extra features on the Plat Pro (phase, depth, compressor) make it a real feedback fighter, and gets the best out of your bass. Sharing technique tips ... I'm always up for that if I can get an hour or two off baby care. I'm West London, where are you? That bluesy gutsy sound is my thing, and I've crossed a lot of bridges in 20 odd years.
Thanks Paul. I am nr Hammersmith - so also West London - and would welcome advice and tips. FYI, I have a c.15 year old Andreas Zeller 3/4 bass (carved front, rest is laminate) with Thomastick Spirocore strings and a Shadow 950 pickup and am currently playing through my TC 450 head and TC 1x12 cab - have feedback/volume problems with this so am after a Fishman Platinum preamp. -
Yep, the sideways finger thing is all about getting good purchase and giving that string some real welly. Your thumb against the edge of the board gives extra leverage too, until you start playing with your whole arm which really gets the strings moving! DB is MUCH more physical than electric bass. You want to dig in and get those strings moving. You'll get much more volume and pronounced attack from your strings this way, without having to rely on over-amplifying ... which just exacerbates the feedback problem. Make sure you post first gigs with Rattlin Bone ... PS where in London are you? I'm always up for sharing tips and ideas with like-minded bassists. I been doing this for a long time now! Strings, pick-ups, amplifiers, technique ... it's a mine field.
Thanks Paul. First gig is on Halloween (of course!) with further gigs likely in Soho and Camden on 23 Nov and 1 Dec. I am nr Hammersmith and would welcome advice.

Two trades with HJ in last month or so for high end basses. Jack is a gent and a stickler for detail (like me). There are two screws I need for the scratchplate. Both reside in a manila envelope that Jack has stored and is in the process of getting to me. Super BassChatter!

DB newb questions about preamp (eg Fishman Platinum)
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks Jake - not got a teacher and I could definitely do with a technique brush up. After two hours of practice on Saturday my left forefinger kept curling up involuntarily Don't suppose you are in the London area any time soon with an hour or two to kill? -
As I will be gigging a DB for the first time next month I need to sort out my live gear. I am told (by Mark at BassDirect) that my TC 450 head plus TC 12" cab should work fine with a DB, so I don't need to buy an acoustic specific amp/combo. However, when I plugged in the DB (which has a Shadow 950 pickup) unless the gain was almost completely down I got feedback. This in turn meant I had to have master volume almost to the max and even then it wasn't at all loud. So do I need some kind of preamp, like a Fishman Platinum, to control the EQ - and if I do, do I plug into the front of the amp or do I bypass the amp EQ altogether and plug into the effects send/return (I forget what its called!) socket at the rear of the amp? More generally should a DB player have a preamp like a Fishman Platinum in their gig bag for differing back line situations?

I bought this only a couple of weeks ago but my circumstances have changed, having just secured a double bass spot in a band and having no need of the extra string in my punk outfit. If I'm hionest I am also having some problems switching from 4 to 5 strings. Finally my CS Jazz has not sold and I am thinking of keeping it as it's such a nice example (not decided yet). Something has to give and this is the most expendable of my basses as its the least likely to be gigged any time soon. So it's a 1992 Alembic Elan 5 with flame walnut top, maple body and purple heart laminates in the neck. Ebony board. Weighs about 10.5 pounds. Plays superbly with low action, wearing a new set of EB Slinkies. Minor surface dints but none that would be picked up by camera. It really could pass for a recently made instrument, rather than one that is 18 years old. I have ordered a brass truss rod cover from Alembic ( to replace the personalised one with letter N that is there now) which will be included in the sale. No case but I will buy hard case if it needs shipping For a couple more pics, click on link in my sig below. I am asking what it cost me on eBay (not including postage), which was £1,750. Thanks thisnameistaken. I got the DB gig with Rattlin Bone today and the constructive criticism I got when auditioning was that I was playing a bit quietly. So its something I definitely need to work on. Appreciate your answers.

I auditioned today and I think I got the gig Very excited. Great songs and the main man, Wily Bo Walker, is a gent. Its DB practice for me from now on and a 10-to-12 song set to learn Woooooooooohooooooooo
I don't know about the best but http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Introduction-Upright...=item4cf1f757bb seemed to work for me starting out
thanks mate, nice and cheap too! Just ordered a copy
Get a beginners DVD & go from there. It'll iron out any bad habits early on. I play about 4" up from the bottom of the fingerboard. I'm no upright expert but I wanted to get my technique as good as I can early on
Which is the best learner DVD, Tim? Or any other DB'er for that matter? I have an ancient VHS video with Danny THiompson but its low on technique advice

Oops, just re-read my OP. I used the word above rather than below when referring to where the neck meets the body. For the avoidance of doubt I am playing just below where the neck meets the body, some six inches nearer to the headstock than where I see most jazz players plucking. The replies above are really helpful, many thanks to all.
-
Thanks will try re-positioning my right hand. From your reply it sounds like the richness of the tone is th reason for playing in the classical way - when playing amplified live would this still be the case?
-
Been having a crack at my DB this weekend and I noticed that I am plucking the strings higher up the board than is standard. NB, the lines I am playing are all in the lower registers (in electric bass parlance, nothing above the 8th fret). To explain, I am plucking the strings almost perpendicular to them with two fingers, just like an electric, just [s]above[/s] below where the neck and body meet. The classic way to pluck I know is at an angle with the side of the finger further down the neck. Is there an issue with the way I am playing (volume, resonance, etc) and should I re-learn to pluck further down the neck? The advantage of the way I am playing is it feels natural coming from electric and I csn play much faster - I appreciate that I would have to shift for any notes played in higher registers.

Actually Trav it was me Joe Zawinul took one look at me and said "Who izz dis idiot. He stands dere, mit da weiss Fender bass and da even weisser hair and he plays like mit da feet. Bring me a strudel and some Baileys" The rest is history

Nice one Nick! I know you've had a hankering after a vintage P for ages. For all my (somewhat embarrassing!) juggling of my bass collection the only definite/keeper is my 72P.

I liked the Nick Cave stuff, especially the very intense second track. That dissonant guitar style is used a lot by his guitarist/ violinist - I appreciate it's not to everyone's taste - boring and run of the mill it ain't though! I may have a spare ticket to see Grinderman in a couple of week's time in London but I don't think I will be bowled over by the rush of BassChatters!

Actually Chris I do keep wavering on this one (I withdrew it from sale at one point after a long enjoyable playing session). I am thinking about keeping it and moving on one of my two Alembics instead to balance the books (plus I do NOT need 4 basses!) I could sell the black Alembic Spoiler very easily on Alembic Club as there are a legion of Cliff Burton fans out there who want a relatively hard-to-find black Spoiler. Thing is, I prefer playing the Spoiler to my new 5 string Alembic and I would like a right wally moving on my Alembic 5 so quickly. Aaarrgghh
