This is a mighty fine band with more inches-in-height per guitarist than any other London band Recommended viewing for BassChatters

Friday bump - I am trying to decide whether to keep this (as many have suggested to me). To be honest, I could probably use the cash more (and I have a history of falling head over heels with Jazzes then selling them on when I re-discover that I prefer my Precision), so its still for sale for now. I will weigh this precisely over the weekend but, from playing it, it may even be as light as my 72P which is about 8.5lb Ramble over//

Nitro finishes - do they they toughen with age?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks Jack. I am 50:50 about keeping this. Mind you I do have a history of falling for a Jazz bass and then selling it on prompt-ish when I re - discover that I like my Precision better. Decisions ..... -
Nitro finishes - do they they toughen with age?
After 4 years it's pretty much as hard as it's going to be.
Thx BB2000, so if the finish is fully hardened does that also mean that its less fragile - just so I am clear ? And wOuld it by that time be safe to put on a foam covered bass stand - or could it still lose chunks of finish by the strap button where it rests on the stand (as I have seen happen to some other basses in the FS section)? Apologies if I'm slow on the uptake here! -

I have a lovely 2006 Fender CS 64 Jazz for sale. Even though I have already spent the possible sale proceeds, I am half thinking about hanging on to it as I played it this evening (got it in a trade, arrived yesterday) and its so nice. My only concern would be whether I am too oaf-ish and would damage the nitro finish badly. Now I know nitro finishes are fragile, but do they toughen up with age? I read somewhere that nitro takes a long time to dry out and that it is very reactive to begin with. But does this change? Or would the finish still stain/react for example if I put it on a guitar stand with the wrong sort of foam on it even though its four years old?

Didn't really get the chance to play this newly-arrived bass yesterday as got in late from the Arsenal drubbing of Braga ( ) However, just spent half an hour noodling on it this evening. My word, this is the nicest Fender Jazz I have ever played, up there with Nash for construction and playability (albeit with your typical slim J neck as opposed to the chunky Nash neck). Beautiful nitro finish, very light, very slick to play and looks considerably classier than the (already good) American Standard Jazz. Bump for a superb bass that will make someone REALLY happy

Cleaning a partly corroded steel roundwound string
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
Meths?
Thanks Adam - think Mrs C drunk it all Would white spirit double up as a meths-alike? -
Just got my Alembic 5'er yesterday (very nice it is too). It has a set of mega-expensive Alembic steel round-wound strings on ($75 a set) but the E string has areas of corrosion/discolouration around the 3rd//5th frets and in the right hand picking area - I assume the prior owner had very sweaty hands. The thing is, its only the E string thats like this and I don't want to buy a whole new set (individual strings are not available FS) So does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean up or reduce the corrosion on strings? Is there some kind of wipe or chemical dip that gets rid? Cheers Clarky

Just did a trade with Paul for a pair of basses (Alleva Coppolo Willie Weeks for a Fender CS 64 Jazz and a top-up). Very smooth deal and the 64J came very well packed and exactly as described (its a beauty, although I will be moving it on to help pay for an Alembic). Cheers Paulie!

Stings old bass. bargin at £25,000 inc free shipping.
Clarky replied to dave_bass5's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps it a typo and it was once played by The Stig? Then it might be worth something PS, like the "free shipping" - that brings down the cost a lot -
Compact, light DI box that's great but not too expensive?
Clarky replied to gafbass02's topic in Accessories and Misc
I bought the Radial Pro DI after taking advice on the forum on the best balance between price and high quality .... but have not ended up using at all. I am selling mine (its in as-new nick) for about 20% less than I paid - £70 posted (vs about £90). Is this too expensive for you? -

I have just taken delivery of Fender Custom Shop NOS 64 Jazz in 3TS/tort as part of a trade for my AC Willie Weeks and want to move this on to realise the cash. Made in 2006, its in excellent condition (just a little loss of paint by the neck pocket, on the underside, presumably where someone had the neck off to adjust the truss rod) and one or two other tiny marks which wouldn't show up in a photo (mainly slight imprints in the nitro finish from the edge of the no-longer-fitted chrome cover; OutToPlayJazz noted the same with his 2010 50th anniv Jazz). Low action (c.2.5-3.0 mm at the 12th fret) and plays really well. Weighs less than 9 lbs. It has the custom shop case (looks as-new) and all the case candy inc chrome covers, Custom Shop certificate and the rest still in original sealed bag). Actual photos below (updated): Looking for £1600 posted ono (for contiental European BassChatters its Euro 1,900 plus postage). Its not a limited edition, unlike wolldav's, hence lower price if BC'ers are comparing the two. It is nevertheless a Custom Shop bass with all the bells and whistles and extra care/attention/quality that implies. There's a s/h one on eBay for £1670 including post (link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-2009-USA-CUST...=item20b3b3e52e ) but generally these run to £2,000+ (up to £2,400) new. So I think my price is a fair one

I think most flats are wound with flat wire/tape, whereas Chromes (and Status too?) are ground down to be flat. Probably explains the slightly different characteristics
-
D'Addario Chromes have a bit more clank and zing IMHO versus TI flats, LaBellas and Pyramid Golds

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.
