I bought this only a couple of weeks ago but my circumstances have changed, having just secured a double bass spot in a band and having no need of the extra string in my punk outfit. If I'm hionest I am also having some problems switching from 4 to 5 strings. Finally my CS Jazz has not sold and I am thinking of keeping it as it's such a nice example (not decided yet). Something has to give and this is the most expendable of my basses as its the least likely to be gigged any time soon. So it's a 1992 Alembic Elan 5 with flame walnut top,maple body and purple heart laminates in the neck. Ebony board. Weighs about 10.5 pounds. Plays superbly with low action, wearing a new set of EB Slinkies. Minor surface dints but none that would be picked up by camera. It really could pass for a recently made instrument, rather than one that is 18 years old. I have ordered a brass truss rod cover from Alembic ( to replace the personalised one with letter N that is there now) which will be included in the sale. No case but I will buy hard case if it needs shipping For a couple more pics, click on link in my sig below. I am asking what it cost me on eBay (not including postage), which was £1,750. Thanks thisnameistaken. I got the DB gig with Rattlin Bone today and the constructive criticism I got when auditioning was that I was playing a bit quietly. So its something I definitely need to work on. Appreciate your answers.

I auditioned today and I think I got the gig Very excited. Great songs and the main man, Wily Bo Walker, is a gent. Its DB practice for me from now on and a 10-to-12 song set to learn Woooooooooohooooooooo

Oops, just re-read my OP. I used the word above rather than below when referring to where the neck meets the body. For the avoidance of doubt I am playing just below where the neck meets the body, some six inches nearer to the headstock than where I see most jazz players plucking. The replies above are really helpful, many thanks to all.

Thanks will try re-positioning my right hand. From your reply it sounds like the richness of the tone is th reason for playing in the classical way - when playing amplified live would this still be the case?

Been having a crack at my DB this weekend and I noticed that I am plucking the strings higher up the board than is standard. NB, the lines I am playing are all in the lower registers (in electric bass parlance, nothing above the 8th fret). To explain, I am plucking the strings almost perpendicular to them with two fingers, just like an electric, just [s]above[/s] below where the neck and body meet. The classic way to pluck I know is at an angle with the side of the finger further down the neck. Is there an issue with the way I am playing (volume, resonance, etc) and should I re-learn to pluck further down the neck? The advantage of the way I am playing is it feels natural coming from electric and I csn play much faster - I appreciate that I would have to shift for any notes played in higher registers.

Nice one Nick! I know you've had a hankering after a vintage P for ages. For all my (somewhat embarrassing!) juggling of my bass collection the only definite/keeper is my 72P.

I liked the Nick Cave stuff, especially the very intense second track. That dissonant guitar style is used a lot by his guitarist/ violinist - I appreciate it's not to everyone's taste - boring and run of the mill it ain't though! I may have a spare ticket to see Grinderman in a couple of week's time in London but I don't think I will be bowled over by the rush of BassChatters!

Actually Chris I do keep wavering on this one (I withdrew it from sale at one point after a long enjoyable playing session). I am thinking about keeping it and moving on one of my two Alembics instead to balance the books (plus I do NOT need 4 basses!) I could sell the black Alembic Spoiler very easily on Alembic Club as there are a legion of Cliff Burton fans out there who want a relatively hard-to-find black Spoiler. Thing is, I prefer playing the Spoiler to my new 5 string Alembic and I would like a right wally moving on my Alembic 5 so quickly. Aaarrgghh

I find the B width neck (1.625 inches), half way betwwe P and J widths, to be the most comfortable. My 72P has a B width neck and is so easy to play that any idiot could do it (which is fortunate for me). The Alleva WW had a traditional 1.75 width neck and I didn't find it as comfortable as my 72P (although it wasa clearly better made!) You can buy matched PJ pickup sets from Wizard, DiMarzio etc so why not try that on one of your Ps, Gareth? Will cost including installation between £100-200 but that's a lot cheaper than the cost of a Jazz bass.

The Pino was gorgeous but unfortunately displayed in a glass case so I couldn't get to play it. It was also about £2500 when translated from Kroner, so the strings won out

Danish bump - like Danish bacon only less tasty! PS, BoomBass I stumbled across a big music shop in the centre of Copenhagen (Aage? Near the Round Tower). Lovely selection of Fenders (includinga Pino Precision), Sanbergs etc. Of course I only bought some strings!

I am amazed this still here. Cracking bass for the money. I think you should get a box from your nearest guitar shop and offer postage, would be gone in a flash in my view.
