1.
You’ll never sound like a double bass but you can sound less like a bass guitar if you turn to full bass, play nearer the neck and take some top off the amp. If you want to kill the sound some more try some foam under the strings, but I don't think foam really works in live situations, unless you’re DI’ing. Your hand problems are only temporary so I wouldn't spend any money on this.
Thanks Chris. I tried the foam mute idea on Sunday and didn't think it made any real difference on the E and A and just muffled the D and G, so I wasn't bowled over (hence me posting this thread today). As I am lucky enough to own more than one P-bass I am going to try some La Bella nylon tapewounds on my 51RI Precision (£28 at Stringbusters). If it doesn't suit, I can always sell the strings on BassChat and my total outlay will be less than half of Mrs C's latest driving ticket!
2. Sam bought my Wal. Paid immediately and very friendly communications. Another recommended BC'er!
3.
Here's a curveball for ya... Have you got a J at the moment? (I can never keep up with you ) If so, roll the tone off, favour the bridge pickup and play right over the neck. As DB-ish as it's possible to get! A little trick I learned from The Bass Doc.
Thanks WoT, I may have a Jazz incoming by coincidence (!) so I will give that a try. Also Beedster, I just googled and found that LaBellas do the nylon tapewounds that I think I was referring to in OP - my bad, mate! I assumed Deep Talkers were just 'ordinary' metal flats. As for my "deader" comment, it was my hamfisted way of saying less bright/ringing.
4.
La Bella Deep Talkers mate
I already have Pyramid Gold Flats which sound 'deader' than LaBellas to my ears but still not that DB-ish. I think it was some kind of nylon tapewound strings that I have a recollection of.
5. Given my knackered left hand I will be using my Fender Precision for the first couple of gigs in my new band, rather than the DB. Does anyone have any recommendations for strings to make my P-bass sound as DB-ish as possible? I have tried Trubass strings in the past in the past but TBH found them very thick and unwieldy. IIRC, however, there is another set of black strings that are easier to play and sound quite DB-ish - can anyone tell me what they are - or alternatively recommend something else? Obviously I can also stick some foam under the strings by the bridge if needs be (as I did at our rehearsal on Sunday). Thanks gents and ladies
6. Well the Fracture clinic took more x-rays this morning and there has been no movement/displacement of the fractures (despite my rehearsal y'day which I of course omitted to mention!) so all on track. Prognosis is 4 weeks recovery time for finger and 6 weeks for the hand bone (metacarpal). Apparently I am not to play DB in that period ... they didn't mention electric bass though
7. Good grief, this is nearly £200 cheaper than a new one at BassDirect (and thats AFTER the price cut from over £600!). Great amp, very tube-like (as close as a Mesa Walkabout) and an absolute bargain. Have a bump on me
8. Listen to this for absolutely the most beautiful DB
9. 'Waltz for Debbie' by the Bill Evans trio with the fabulous Scott LaFaro on DB - see two posts down
10.
If it's what I think it is Jase, you should be a happy bunny!
Simples Chris, I bought his Fender Pino
11. Thank all for the good wishes Update: I managed a 3-hour rehearsal with the new band this afternoon using an electric bass (my lovely new Fender Pino, yummy) and two fingers! Took some forethought for several tracks but it was do-able and I even got commended at the end for "holding the band together". So I passed the test and now I can rest the hand for a few days. And another first, I did the rehearsal finger-style, having previously been a pick only player. Just that short time playing DB has obviously increased my right hand strength significantly (no lewd comments!).
12. Jas (finally!) sold me his Fender Pino, the bass I have long coveted. He even drove down from Suffolk to London to deliver it, and before the money had cleared. We had a nice chat too over a coffee. Top bloke, as others have said
13. Gareth collected my Barefaced Vintage cab today. Lovely smooth transaction and friendly guy. Another successful BassChat trade and happy to recommend Gareth!
14.
I hope this is still there tomorrow, I'd like a look
It will be with me for a couple more days but no Pete Townsend impersonations, Jas!
15.
Here are the rest of the photos: http://tinypic.com/a/20ggy/3 These were taken just after I bought the bass from Silverfoxnik, so it still had the "wrong" knobs fitted. Paul Herman did a complete overhaul of the bass for me, especially the electrics and electronics, and it came back to me in pretty much 'as new' condition. I haven't played many Wals so I'd best not gush, but this is a very VERY competent bass - far better than me! I hadn't planned to sell it, but I received an offer I couldn't refuse.
Thx Jack, much appreciated. The photos are second only to lysdexia's
16. I only got this a couple of weeks ago in a trade with Happy Jack but - though its a gorgeous bass - something has to give as I have just splurged on a couple more basses (including a Fender Pino, which I have long coveted) and I really don't want to sell my lovely Alembic. It was valued in our trade at £1750, including a new Wal embossed Hiscox case, and thats what I would like for it. It spent a few months with Paul Herman this summer being restored to its former glory (electrics, hardware etc) and is in superb condition, especially considering its a 1978 (9?) bass. The only non-stock feature, as far as I am aware, is the ebony thumb-rest Jack had made for the bass. I am taking the liberty of including a couple of Jack's highly professional photos. Hope thats OK Jack? Edit: just spotted that the knobs in these photos are different to the ones on the bass now. Paul Herman put original-type black-and-clear plastic calibrated knobs on the bass. Plus, as I couldn't locate a black tipped pickup selector switch (PH has not responded to my emails) I coloured the existing (incorrect) white one in black with a permanent marker pen - it works! 17. Mrs C was furious that Imelda Mae got three songs (she hates 50s type music) and her beloved Ray Davies and Mumford & Sons got only one. Does seem rather unbalanced
18. Just watched Imelda Mae on Friday Jools - she and her band are very good Was it me or did the neck on the bass player's Jazz bass (very nice oly white one, BTW) look like a tree trunk?
19. Slightly OT but good to see they are still listing the fretless 76P that I bought from them in May/June and sold to Happy Jack a month ago http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6285
20.
I believe some people rather like Coldplay.
Sadly, Mrs Clarky is one of them
21.
My most sincere apologies Clarky ... however, it is the truth that I just don't do metal (and its derivatives) ... I understand that others, your good self included, do. BTW, I'm loving the VT Bass.
Glad to hear the VT bass is working - fab pedal but I am lazy and wanted an XLR line out hence swapped for the sonically inferior (but still good) Sansamp Regarding the former, Metallica make me want to punch the air and shout "F8ck yeah!" whereas Coldplay make me want to punch a wall and shout "f*ck off"!
22.
I can't bear to listen to Coldplay and equally I can't bear to listen to Metallica - for me, both dull as dishwater - and aren't some of Metallica middle-class too?
Dave, please never bracket Metallica (my favourite band) with Coldplay again. Or we are through
