Weren't the cutaways popular with rockabilly slappers? So may be it allows you to slap higher up the board rather than change to thumb position ?

Congrats mate. Absolute rock machine! Gotta call it Phil ...

I am back using Pyramid Golds as they have higher tension than TIs and feel immediately worn in and smooth. The E string is a lottery tone-wise though as I have had a couple of dead ones

I am withdrawing this from sale as - having had a session on it again yesterday evening - it plays so beautifully and sounds so good. The weight remains a serious issue but I am going to persevere with a more supportive strap. I will also keep an eye open for a lighter, early 80s lookalike - if one should come along (albeit they rarely do) I will buy that one and put this bass up FS again.
Hey mate how was the DB tone, and how was your Fishman Pro eq set? Have mirrored your set up with Plat pro and pickup and am getting some good tones through a PA I set up in one of my spare rooms, but would be interested to see how you've set up.
Well I had no feedback problems as a result of the Fishman, which was a positive, and there was really good 'projection' of the bass sound. I would say I got an OK tone (quite rich but not quite capturing that acoustic 'buzz'). I am sure I could have done tons better if we hadn't been so rushed in our soundcheck. We were second to s/c and the poncey gypsy jazz bunch before us took an hour or more, meaning we had barely any time if we were to be fair to the other bands lined up to soundcheck. Of course by the time all 14 (or was it 15?) of us were in full swing, I doubt anyone would have noticed the difference if I was playing an electric bass! Overall, for my first gig I was pretty pleased with the tone and especially pleased that it was good enough to help drive a large band along.
That's the BDSM.
Very kind but I think my doc would give me the CSA - crass stupidity award!

Never had a problem with taking one passive Fender bass to a gig (P or J) When I have brought my (heavy) active Alembic to a gig I have always ensured I have a screwdriver and spare battery close to hand but was still happy to have no back-up

First gig with new band Rattlin Bone last night at The Miller near London Bridge. Fantastic evening (lots of burlesque, circus showpeople, Halloween dressing up etc) and my first gig on DB. Here's a pic or two. You can't even see the horn section who are left of stage. There were 15 of us in total!

And here I am zombified at the gig (it was a Halloween horror-fest)
Yeah how did your hand hold up?
The hand was fine throughout the gig, reckon it was the adrenaline. Actually my 'good' right hand was the one that was struggling towards the end, especially when I was playing the third to last number which features a repeated eighth note riff for about 3 minutes while the various brass instruments and guitar take turns soloing around the main theme. That was hard work. Having played in a punk band for two years or so it was great have an audience that featured loads of people dancing and wasn't 95% blokes!

It's not a Sadowsky logo though, BB, the controls are more like an Alleva Coppollo (but it's not one of those either). Not much help there!
Hi Clarky, thanks very much for this but been considering it anyway - the bass gluttony has left me feeling a bit hollow!
Wish I could afford your AC in sonic blue!

Hey Loz that's a bummer. But don't sell your pride and joys due to one bad shipping experience! All the best, Clarky
Well done Clarky! And how are the fingers today?
Thanks! The fingers are a bit stiff and the back of my hand ( where I broke the metacarpal) is a bit sore - but to be honest it's not a lot different to how it felt yesterday morning. I have got time to rest it now as next gig not for three weeks (23 November) and no rehearsals before that. So hopefully all will be sorted by the next gig
Well done, Clarky. How is the hand?
Thanks Dave. It's a bit sore this morning but not unusually so. It's 3 weeks to our next gig so plenty of time to rest it and hopefully it should be pretty much healed by then.

Rather rashly, given my damaged left hand, I took my DB along to the gig this evening and played the whole, near-1 hour set with it. Played it through the Platinum Pro preamp and my MB combo. Couldn't quite get it sounding 100% acoustic-like but not far off and I didn't get any feedback problems. Really chuffed! The lines are incredibly simple in Rattlin Bone so that my role is often more of a timekeeper/rhythm instrument but that suits me just fine as I am very much a learner. I even got plaudits from a couple of audience members about my playing .... which was nice

Possibly rashly (given my damaged left hand), I took my DB along and did the whole gig with it. My first ever DB gig! We played for just under an hour and got a fantastic audience reaction. Really chuffed
am I trippin' or are there eight control nobs on the one newstead is pictured with?
No you are quite sober! He modded his Spoiler by fitting Series II controls to it (and a hard-to-see pickguard as he sweats so much it was going into the pickup cavities - yuk). Mine is simple by comparison with volume and tone filter knobs, a rotary pickup selector (which has a useful 'off' position for total silence) and a 'Q' switch (which subtly changes frequencies, making it a bit deeper).

A reminder that if anyone is wandering round near London Bridge late tomorrow (I know thats most of you!) we are headlining at midnight. Due to my hand break I will be using my Precision, not the DB. Hopefully will be using the DB for our second gig at The Comedy in Soho three weeks later

Slash and Friends Tribute Band (Performing Slash's new solo tour set)
Clarky replied to chriswilliams666's topic in Gigs
Hey Chris, I was down in Bognor at the White Horse on Tuesday for a band rehearsal (long way for a Londoner!) and recognised your gig poster on the wall - then put two and two together! Nice little venue with a decent sized stage. Best of luck with the gig! -
Hi Clarky, sad news you have to sell that bass. I did my first gig with my new Alembic bass yesterday and it sounds great. All the best with the sale. Jazzyvee
Thanks JV, its the best bass I own but also by far the heaviest and its got to the stage where its a problem for me. Very sad. More positively I will be keeping an eye open on the Alembic Club for an early 80s black Spoiler as these were nearer 9 pounds (unlike the much heavier late 80s versions)
