2.
Nige, do you mind if I post this on my FB page?
I already did Steve ... and Nige did not hunt me down like a dog!
 3. Details added above of a half-hour acoustic set that I will also be playing at the Upton Blues festival, including some old blues and jive classics (Louis Prima, Taj Mahal), some newer songs (Tom Waits) and some of Bo's own compositions
 4. Afraid I can't make it (I'm off to Sonisphere festival that day to see Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth) but hope its a roaring success, Ad
 5.
No - let's just keep swopping basses between the three of us for a few months ...
isn't that what Beedster meant? So which of his two Ricks do you want, Jack, fretted or fretless?
 6. The two cocobolo tops are just stunning, Loz, such an attractive and rich looking wood
 7.
I had a tone skull for a while, really improved the timbre of my bass, turned it around for £5000 in a hi-fi shop.
Fodera offer it as a £15,000 option so 5k was a bargain
 8.
So how's the TH now you've had it a while Clarky? Very tempted by one of these now that BassGear has a few in stock
I've not really explored it's potential yet as I have had band rehearsals each of last two weekends (we are getting ready for the Upton Blues festival) so it's been full-on DB time. I have spent an hour or two with it and my Jazz bass. It has a lovely smooth tone, not as tube-y as my old Mesa or the TC 450 but nice and round all the same and with the potential to go clean or gnarly. It looks very classy and seems to me a great rock amp. For more clean hifi or modern sounds it's probably not as appropriate as my old MarkBass F1. The true test is gigging it of course but thats a bit tricky given that I only play DB in my band. Based on my limited experience so far though I am very pleased with it and do not envisage me moving it on as it sounds good, looks great and has the simplicity of controls that I like in an amp.
 9.
Just wondering though, what do you use the skull for?
I am surprised noone spotted that before! I have wedged the (plastic) skull on the headstock of my double bass at our last couple of gigs - fits with the zombie/voodoo vibe!
 10. I am truly sorry to have complicated your life yet again, Jack
 11.
I gave Clarky a lesson on that instrument so can reliably report it is indeed a bargain.
Thanks Jake! As an aside, when Malcolm Healey replaced the bridge he also adjusted the nut and checked the fingerboard. So - barring the issue of personal taste regarding action/bridge height as mentioned above (the bridge could be filed for lower action) - it really is in completely road-ready condition
 12.
I thought they all came with bronzes!! lol. Anyway you can put what ever string you like on them (within the relms of sanity) That metalic zing of rounds and bronzes on an acoustic has a certain charme but when you put Black Nylon wounds on............ Once you've tried Black you'll never go back A
OT but which black nylons do you use? I tried some Roto TruBass on my Eko fretless acoustic and they were too plasticky sounding. I'm currently using TI Flats on it
 13.
But that's easy - you just hold your falsies like they're a pick.
I swallowed them first
 14.
Lightweight
I played the bass with my teeth
 15. This is a US-made mag pickup for DB that affixes with 3M Dual Lock (ultra-strong velcro) to the end of the fingerboard (you will need a fresh piece as the one at the end of my fingerboard won't come off without losing its sticky side) and has adjustable pole pieces, which needs a hex key for adjustment. The pickup itself is hum cancelling and sounds quite woody. As I am going to use a Baby Bass for Rattlin Bone gigs in future I have no need of a feedback-killing mag pickup any more. This cost me about £120 but as these are not very well known (unlike Kent Armstrong and Schaller mag pickups) I will sell for £85 posted http://cgi.ebay.ca/KRIVO-Handcrafted-Magne...f#ht_2116wt_482 Here is the worst ever advert for a pickup on Youtube and - no - its not me
 16. I bought these from Thomann as backups for the strings on my Zeller DB http://www.thomann.de/gb/presto_nylonwound_2.htm As the bass is now up for sale, I am also selling these strings. They are completely new and unused in their packets still. These are gut-alike nylon tapewound strings but with a metal core so they can be used with both mag and piezo pickups. NB, despite being described as 'light' I would put them at medium tension. Cost me £101 a couple of weeks ago. £80 posted sounds more than fair to me?
 17. Postscript: I didn't burst the blisters and applied Germolene New Skin as suggested by one of the posters on the thread (Boots was out of surgical spirit). Seems to have done the trick as went through another four-hour rehearsal on the DB this afternoon with no problems whatsoever. Thanks all!
 18. Another deal with Jack, whereby I bought his Alleva P5. As always a gent to deal with .. And really looks after his gear
 19.
Number 3 is spot on. I generally pluck an open string to demonstrate the controls on an active bass - volume, pan, bass, mid , treble. Never make the customer feel insecure.
And number 4 is me
 20.
Aah.. my first DB was one of these of about the same age. With the bridge upgrade this should be a really decent piece of kit, and adding in all those extras seems like a BARGAIN ALERT in my opinion
Thanks mate - always difficult to price things like this that come up infrequently - other Zellers on BC have gone for £750-799 but this has a bunch of extras and the upgraded bridge. Given what its cost me, I think £850 is a bargain. Plus if you tried to recreate this setup with all new gear it would cost about £1,700 (Zeller £1,190, bridge and gigbag upgrades, >£350, stand £40, Shadow £100), so its effectively priced at just half that of a new equivalent.
 21. Hi, all due to two new DB arrivals I am putting up for sale my old faithful Andreas Zeller 3/4 DB (carved front and laminate back/sides). Its about 15 years old or thereabouts and was bought new from well-known retailer Chas E. Footes in Soho for about £1,000 IIRC. I have recently spent over £200 on it having a new bridge installed by top luthier Malcolm Healey, plus it has a new Tom & Will gig bag (£150), Hercules stand (£40) and Shadow SH950 pickup (£100). So thats around £500 of extras and work done on it in the last couple of months! FYI, Malcolm has set the bridge for medium, rather than low, action but it could easily be filed down to a much lower action if you wanted it (though this is a taste thing; the lower the action, the faster the playing but the lower the thump factor). Now wearing low tension Silver Slaps gut-alike strings. Being a few years old and gigged it has some crazing in the varnish on the back and a few dings here and there - there is nothing major/serious (no splits or cracks) that requires any work or expenditure. It is basically gig-ready! Given my recent spends on it and the value of the extras (new pickup, stand, gigbag), I would like £850 Due to the size it would be pickup (or local meet-up) only. I am nr Hammersmith in London For photos, click on the 'porn pics' link in my sig below. You will see it has some feedback-reducing foam plugs in the f-holes (which you can easily remove) and some retro stickers on it - the latter are vinyl and just peel off. It also has (ahem) some tippex position marks on the side of the fingerboard which you can keep or just scratch off with your finger nail.
 22. Superb job Wayne. Given that decent re-fins costs several hundred quid, why don't you start up a nice little earner sideline in custom re-fins? Would help pay for your Ampeg habit
 23.
Nice one (or two) mate. Where does that leave your old Zeller?
Sat a bit sadly in the corner. I am not allowed to move it on though as it has sentimental associations (I used it in lessons about 10-15 years ago with this lovely old jazzer, Phil Bates [played with Grapelli and Tubby Hayes], who sadly passed away a couple of years ago and the bass reminds Mrs C of him) Edit: hmmm, Mrs C seems more amenable to be moving this on as three double basses are taking up too much of the sitting room!
 24. I met Mr_Bassman (Keith) a week or so back and we did a trade which involved my Eminence EUB going his way and his 1960s Ampeg Baby Bass and Kolstein Busetto travel bass coming my way - the second one was a bit of a surprise as Keith had only brought it along to show me .. but I fell in love with the tone and sheer beauty of the bass. Mind you, I don't think Keith expected to be going home with the Eminence either! Dangerous, these dodgy car park meet-ups The Baby Bass is in amazing condition for its age, looks fabulously retro and is about as feedback-proof as a DB gets so this will be my regular gigging bass for Rattlin Bone. The Kolstein will (for now, at least) stay at home while I enjoy playing it and the sheer gorgeousness of its tone. I intend to use this for gigs which are more intimate, with lower volumes. Anyway, at the risk of annoying the mods with a large picture (2Mb) here they are and there are a few more pics if you click on the 'porn pics' link in my signature below.
