Stingrays improve my playing...well they feel like they do.
Clarky replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
Its all swings and roundabouts. A Stingray makes you play better, a Jazz improves your IQ and a Precision increasres penis length -
Hi, all good! IMHO Innovation should offer.a low tension gut-alike with metal core, akin to the Presto Ultralight but with Silver Slap like tension (I found the Prestos just that bit harder to play than SS's). My tuwo pennorth!

I think it was me who posted it - an Ozzy (I think) band that played about 25 song parts over a constant chord sequence. I can't search for it as on Blackberry but if you search my topics from my profile you should find it
Yes I did, I've spent the last 12 months very slowly and gradually recovering from it an I still get the occasional mild flare-up and I have to be careful about over-use. I hadn't considered that benefit actually, very good point. The weird thing is the surface of the string though, it's not at all smooth, feels very weird under my fingers. Hopefully they'll smooth off over time as I play them?
Combination of sweat, oils and finger pressure should do that, similar to flats on an electric - gotta say my perception is that Slaps are fairly smooth (only slightly rough with a bit of friction, which is useful)

Its just unfamiliarity as you are used to steels with skinny D/G strings and these are fat old plastic strings. Give it time and you will find them incredibly comfortable and much easier on your hands due to the tension, especially with prolonged playing (didn't you have a tendonitis problem?)

You have my number Chris Bump for a nice acoustic bass with all the gear - I forgot to add, the deal gets better, as I also spent £18 on a proper padded strap with quick release mechanism http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/12..._strap_44pa000_ -
Mrs Bassman insists that I move something on, now if you fancy a Yamaha in a trade I could sneak the fender in and she might not notice it!
Then you would have to sell me back my old P/J fretless, Keith, or Mrs Bassman would spot two very similar basses like an eagle spying bunnies in a field -
I get the same problem, but not all the time. I can practice for hours without any problem but on some gigs my hands are tense after a couple of numbers. I put it down to stress as I can usually alleviate it by relaxing and taking a few deep breaths. I also switch to electric if it becomes a problem. I also give myself a good talking to in the break and this helps!
Thanks! I'm not sure I was stressed so much as fatigued. The acoustic set earlier that afternoon included some really fast repetitive swing/jive bass lines (Jump, Jive n Wail; Caldonia) so I was a bit tired before I even started the full 75-minute RB set. I think a powerball or similar might be best for me

Towards the end of our 75 minute set at the Upton Blues festival yesterday I got cramp in each hand and my left hand curled up like a claw - I had to really use ingenuity to keep playing (used the side of my right hand thumb to pluck for most of a song and to use one very mobile left hand finger to keep the riff up!) Managed to stretch my hands after the song and just about got through the rest of the set. I obviously need to do more hand conditioning if we are going to play longer sets more often. Has anyone else experienced this problem with a DB and - building up hand strength aside - do you have any tips for alleviating the issue if it strikes?

For sale here is a 1980s Eko B4 fretless (unlined neck) that I bought recently from Beedster to use in an acoustic spin-off of Rattlin Bone. It currently has a K&K Floating pickup on it which comes very highly recommended on TalkBass http://www.jp-guitars.co.uk/sales/pickups_...ups_archtop.htm and I have bought a Warwick premium acoustic bass gigbag for it http://www.gak.co.uk/en/warwick-rb-20510b-...stic-bass/35549 I also put a brand new set of La Bella black nylon tape wound strings on it. Although this sounds great at low volumes, I have abandoned the idea of using it live with 'RB lite' as I had problems with feedback whenever I pumped up the volume. While I could muck around with packing the body with foam etc to reduce feedback, I think this would be better in someone's hands that plays in an acoustic jazz or similar group. I paid £100 for the bass, £90 for the pickup and £49 for the gigbag. Add in the cost of the new La Bella strings and my total outlay was over £260. I will bundle the lot for £220 but it would have to be collection or meet-up only in London (not got a box and don't trust delivery services with an acoustic instrument) Not got a picture of my bass to hand but it looks exactly like this and is in very good condition:
+1 for Silver Slaps. The only other ones I've tried are Eurosonics which were good but I prefer the feel of the S S.
Eurosonics are better known in Europe as Presto Ultralights - they have the advantage compared with SS's of having a metal core, so they can be used with a mag pickup. They are higher tension than SS's though (as well as £30 more a set) and I definitely prefer the latter
Have you tried them Clarky? Are they quite gutty sounding? Does the E sound as good as the others? What strings do you use on your Rattlin' Bone gig?
Yep, they were my favourites on my now-sold 3/4 Zeller DB. Very gut-sounding and decent volume across all strings. Be aware they are very fat, so the G will feel huge compared to what you are used to with steels In RB I now use the Ampeg baby bass, which came with some pretty low tension steels on (Jargars I think) and I am happy enough with these so have not changed them.
Cheers Clarky, after years of bare ash, it feels very fresh and funky. Love your pic - I take it that was the smaller set earlier on? Looks like your headstock skull is singing into the mike
Nope, that was in the Rattlin Bone set during one of our front man's audience rapport routines! I wasn't zombified (and no skull embellishment) for the acoustic set -
AFAIC, Silver Slaps have plenty of volume and projection - and their ultra-low tension is a revelation for your fingers

Me at Upton blues festival today in zombie make-up -
I can never tell when its dried up as it barely leaves any residue even when new. I do use it but am never 100% sure it does a whole lot

The Capri Orange P bass looks the dogs nads! -
Nah, I had this once before when playing a long set with my Zeller 3/4 DB. Its basically down to my hands not being used to it (I only ever gigged electric bass with a pick until I joined Rattlin Bone)

Played a 30 minute acoustic blues quartet (on DB) at the Upton Blues festival, which went down really well. First try-out live of my Ampeg Baby Bass. Everyone said it sounded fab Then an hour or two later, the full Rattlin Bone played the main stage for 75 minutes. Went really well and we got an excellent crowd reaction (the promoter loved it too). Only two issues: I was stood near a spotlight that was scorching and my Baby Bass got really hot and - as a consequence - went at least a half tone out of tune after two songs. I managed to find the odd tuning break after that thankfully. The other issue was that I got cramp in each hand near the end of the set and my left hand curled up like a claw - I had to really use ingenuity to keep playing (used the side of my right hand thumb to pluck for most of a song and to use one very mobile left hand finger to keep the riff up!) Managed to stretch my hands after the song and just about got through the rest of the set. I obviously need to do more hand conditioning if we are going to play longer sets more often. The above shouldn't take away from a really successful gig (or two to be precise)
