1. For small gigs I often use a Vox Venue 30 Bass. It's a 30 watt combo with a 12" driver & would do most small venues (depending on how noisy they are though) or acoustic gigs.
2. I often cut the 20hz & 20khz shelfs* (I read about production techniques in a few different mags such as Sound on Sound & Computer Music back in the 80s & 90s) & do this to my electronic music as I like to make some serious subby sounds, but I think it would depend on your bass sound to start with. * Disclaimer, I'm pretty crap at mastering. My hearing has seen better days Though I don't know anyone who could actually hear anything below 20hz or above 20khz.
3. Smallest was with my old rock band. I knew no one in Perth (still don't know many) so asked my work colleagues if they wanna come to our 1st gig in Perth. 1 turned up. The gig was in a separate room from the bar & a couple of folk started popping through about 5 songs in so we may have max'd 6 at one point. Largest is @ 350-400ish which is what most of my gigs have been.
4.
True with 50 foot cables on PA, not a concern with six foot cables.
I didn't think it would be
5. Something else I've just thought about. Apparanly the shorter the cable, the better the sound quality, so daisy chaining would allow shorter cables. But for the length of cables you need to run from amp outs to both cabs, is it going to make any difference? I doubt anyone would be able to hear it at a gig!
6. Cheers Shep. I had thought about sending some off somewhere, but no idea what my target would be. Had thought about the video game industry or adverts, but not too sure. I'd enjoy doing some backing tracks, but not sure how much time I can get to sit & write stuff PM me what your ideas are & I'll let you know what I can do.
7. Quite a few of my basslines follow the timing of the vocals but I harmonise more than go in unison (although there's a few where it sounds great to play in unison). Another thing I like to do occasionally is repeat the last few notes of a vocal part at the end of a bar/section, but I try not to over do this.
8. I've put a selection of songs that I've composed over the past 10 or so years onto Soundcloud & wondered if any of you would like to have a listen & give me some feedback? None of the recordings feature any "real" bass on the tracks (though I've used a few of the basslines & other parts in band settings), but I thought I'd share & see if they're good or just ok. 9. I've a cheek to talk about audience sizes, last gig I did in Perth we had an audience of 1 for the first 5 or so songs! Never went back to that venue & never even took payment from the bar (I felt bad as I think they was relying on us bringing an audience, which we don't have in Perth yet).
10.
Never seen what the purpose of the legislation was. Let's be honest, the factors that determine where live music is played will be the size of the room the size of the potential audience and the cost of the band. Most of the venues I play coudln't take more than a 4 piece without there being no room for an audience.
is that your way of saying you have an audience of 1?
11.
He's good, but for me, the bass (unless you go well into the realms of ERBs) will always be trounced by the chapman stick when it comes to tapping
It's very impressive to watch but the only place I envisage the tune is in a porno from the 80s. :
12. Sorry, you're right. Well Sharkey, shame on you for trying to steal someone else's limelight. You 80s throwback!!!
13. Finally got round to sitting down & learning Sir Duke a couple of weeks back. Good fun to play along with!
14. That's good news! Good ole Fergal.
15.
More speakers = more air moving = more sound. The overall "tone" is another matter.
Moving air is good, but if you're not moving it in the right direction then that's kind of a waste. Think of mixing drivers like having a fan pointing at you keeping you cool & then someone sitting next to you put's a fan on that crosses your stream & oscillates. You lose your consistent breeze.
16. I'm gonna go against what the rest are saying & suggest getting an Ashdown 1x15 cab. If you like the sound you're getting, the extra 15 is going to give you more of the same & will have a better dispersion to your audience than the 4x10. Adding the 4x10 does 2 things. 1, it changes your sound & 2, different sized drivers will give you different sounds at different venues. With the same sized drivers you'll get a more consistent sound from venue to venue.
17. Try changing the lead. I had a buzzing & discovered that one of my cats (kittens at the time) had bitten a couple of very small holes in the shielding.
18. Raise it off the floor a bit so it's closer to ear level. This is another reason 2 vertical cabs are better. What about building your own cabs? BFM has some impressive designs.
19. On a standard 4 string it would most definitely be B on the E. I like how the resonant frequencies make it rattle lots of things!
20. I 2nd buying another 2x10 & maybe flog the 4x10 once you find that you no longer need it & use that money towards upgrading your amp. 2 2x10s stacked vertically will give your audience a better overall volume than any 4x10. The 4x10 will give a nice loud volume to those directly in front of it, but anyone to the left or right will get your bass at a significantly reduced volume (unless you're going through PA of course).
21. I'd double check first, but your 9v pedals may well accept 12v. Moog pedals will run on anything from 9-15v & I run everything on 11.5v.
22. If £1k is your budget then you'll find many good rigs in the for sale section on here. There's a good selection of amps (including a Markbass Rocker), & for cabs there's an Acme B2 & a Markbass 6x10 to start with. And you'd still have change left. If you went down the combo route, there's a Markbass 2x10 for just £550! & if you needed further, there's a few matching 2x10s, again all below budget. The last thing I would do is spend money on your old cabs (no offence intended), but reconing an old peavey is gonna cost more than it's worth.
23. What's your budget? I'd be looking to replace the cabs asap with either 2 2x10s or 2 1x15s (or if you can, either a Barefaced or a BFM self build).
24. EBS?
25.
I can't decide which would be better, the patches in the EHX Ring Thing or the different waveforms on the Way Huge Ring Worm.
You need to get one just to go with your bass & claim Stingring!
