1.
But by your definition, is Bryan Beller is not a good bass player then??
Far from it. He learned his mistake from losing the 1st Vai gig & managed to adapt to get the right sounds needed. He can now happily switch from getting a rounded bass tone (that's associated with fingerstyle) to a more sharp aggressive tone very easily just by how he plays. I wasn't disagreeing with your advice given, more like the opposite. A bassist should always know that his sound/style affects the groove of the song & he should be willing to use whatever technique he can to make sure it fits. Whether that means adapting his fingerstyle like Beller does or uses a pick or some other object makes no difference. See when you say Beller "developed" that technique, do you mean he actually came up with it or just learned how to do it? I grew up listening to Sheehan in the late 80s with Talas & he had a very aggressive tone back then.
2. I don't think I can add much to what's been said, other than listen to the song you're playing & decide what's gonna sound best for it. A good bass player will happily switch how he plays, even mid song. I mainly play with fingers & it's what I prefer, but we have a couple of songs that just need the pick & even one with some slapping (though that's usually the guitarist for noodling during a slow vocal part).
3. 1/2 the fun is experimenting with the order of your fx. An order that works well is octave - distortion - fuzz - filter (wah) - delay. But mess about with the order as you'll find that a pedal in one place will sound very different in another. I'm gonna try sticking my distortion before the octave & then overdrive after it just to see how it sounds. If I don't like it, I change it back. Easy!
4. Not sure. I'll ask him next time I see him & let you know. He's 70 in April, so I'd think your friend would need to be pushing 90 for it to be when he was there!
5. It's convincing the wife to get away. I used to go out with a girl down in Cumbria many moons ago & had no trouble with the journey. Funny enough, my dad went to boarding school in Moffat.
6. I'd love to go to the Moffat Bash. Hopefully sometime, but it's quite a trek from here (I know there's folk that travel further). One up this way would get more of the locals out who can't stay away overnight & there seems to be quite a few Central bassists on here now & with the M9 at Glasgow now upgraded, takes no time at all.
7. "Fender Sub Lime Fuzz - Dunlop Bass Wah - Rat Distortion pedal - MXR M288 Octave pedal - MXR M169 Carbon Copy delay pedal - Amp" Is that the order you run your fx in? Seems a little unusual having the octave near the end of the chain, but if it works for you Like you may have gathered, not many folk use the amp's fx loop other than to maybe run through a rack fx unit. Have you tried the Rat in a different position in the chain?
8. Sounds like a square wave distortion to me with maybe some extra resonance for good measure. Yes, it can be done.
9. Happy user of Markbass here. EBS are very good too though. My advice, go & try both.

Pedal Woe

Looking at your rigs, have you got them raised up so you (& your audience) can hear them clearly? Sound reflections bouncing off walls is a lot clearer than getting absorbed by folks legs.
11.
And we will never hear or see you again. Best thing you will ever do. enjoy the big day when it comes round. Cheers Dave
You wont get rid of me that easily!
12. They usually just boost the volume. Though there are those that can do both.
13. It depends on what power the amp is going to put out. If it's a 600 watt amp, then it could send 300 watts to each of the cabs. 300 going to your 600w cab & 300 going to the 150w cab (which is obviously more than it can handle, but if the amp & ears are used sensibly, then it can still be used). Think of it like having 2 balloons & a tank of air with 2 pipes that will split the air evenly. One balloon being able to take all that is in the tank & the other being 1/4 the size. Both balloons can be used if you only turn the air on partially, but the small balloon isn't capable of taking 1/2 of what is in the tank, so would burst if the tank was opened fully for any amount of time. The big balloon would still take it's fill. Hope I'm not just talking wind here!
14.
They are completely different. The first is a greatly cleaner signal, unless you added some effects or noise or something with the Alesis. Are you serious that you can't hear a difference?
My hearing is pretty bad in my left ear & the top end has gone in my right. Too much loud music & grew up in very noisy environments. No effects on the Alesis, just set flat. So if that's the case, sack buying an interface - you get a good clear signal through the line in on an iMac!
15. Got the recording I did uploaded to Soundcloud. http://soundcloud.com/bassg/line-v-mixer-bigroom Says it all in the description. Can you tell the difference?
16.
Powering active pickups from your head: Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I'll get me coat.
See! That's exactly what I was thinking of prior to opening the thread & even once I opened it, I was still thinking the same thing. Edited to say, I can't help but giggle at the expressions on their faces!

Pedal Woe

What you need to do is see if you can do an extended soundcheck/practice in one of your venues where you'd gig. What sounds good on your own usually sounds gantin in a band mix.
18. Your assumptions are correct. You can get a [s]Parallel[/s] Series cable made from someone like Bassic Bits (OBBM on here).
19.
Yep, both good points, but the (potential) different loudness of different cabs is due to different sensitivity/efficiency of the cabs rather than their power handling as such. A 400W cab won't necessarily be louder than a 200W cab. Just clarifying the point, because the OP only mentioned ohms and power ratings. Sensitivity is an additional consideration.
Very true.
20.
Problem is, when mixing cabs, that one could be much louder and handle more power than the other, and drown out the noise of the other one being upset.
& that's why you're usually better having 2 of the same cab.
21. Oh, & to answer your Q, the "link" on the cab is just the same as using the other speaker out on your amp.
22. It depends how many ohms your cabs are & how many ohms your amp will go down to. If you are using 8 ohm cabs it's a 4 ohm mon load on your amp, then 2 8 ohm cabs is the max (or 1 4 ohm/4 16 ohm cabs). If it's a 2 ohm min load then you'll get 4 8 ohm cabs (or 2 4 ohm cabs). If it's a valve amp then there may be a switch to make it match the load.
23. Like Flyfisher says, use your ears & if it sounds bad, turn it down/back the lower frequencies off.
24. The Platfoam ended up costing £17 odd with postage. I know the Grama pad also has some V foam under it too (you could pop some eggbox between the strips of foam). If you take this into account & the cost of some board, carpet, glue & staples (for the carpet), then the Grama pad is better value. However, if like me you have all but the foam to hand, then it's a no brainer. I might make mine a fold up one so it fits in my bag.
25. They're 4 foot long by 4x2 inch. I bought a strip of Platfoam last week & cut it in 1/2 & put it straight under my cab. Did the job. I was gonna glue it to a bit of chipboard that I have & carpet it, but it was easier to carry the 2 strips in a bag with all the cables. I'm gonna complete the project later (maybe tomorrow).
