1. Another option would be a decent 2x10 if a 2x12 is too big for you. I used a 2x10 in a loud rock band for a good couple of years (still use the 2x10 but not the rock band).
2. Our first gig of 2012 is at the Doghouse in Dundee. We're doing a 25 minute acoustic set on 21st of January for FREE! Any BCers wanting to come along are more than welcome. Time is to be confirmed.
3. I enjoyed that. Very nice!
4. I had a 4x10 (tonne) TE combo for a short while @ 4-5 years ago. Crock of toley! Does punchy mean "it's got plenty of mid, but if you try & add any bass it'll fart on every note"? Yes, it cuts through the mix, but it doesn't add any depth to the mix. I play bass because I like BASS.
5. +1 to buying online. I got my TI flats from Stringbusters & was a quicker delivery than what it would have been had I tried to get parked in town, walk to the local music shop & then order them in (as they're not stocked). And probably a lot cheaper too!
6.
We have a drummer and he's acoustic too.
Now that's a good point. We did an "acoustic" session at a beer festival & the drummer used his electronic kit.
7. unless it's a double bass, then acoustic isn't loud enough without being plugged in & then where's the point? it's an electric. Go for a fretless & that'll fit in with the "acoustic" image. My current band is classed as an "acoustic" band. The singer plays an electro acoustic guitar (plugged in), the other musician plays either mandolin or ukulele (both plugged in) & I play electric bass through a few fx (plugged in). When we add our drummer we're no longer acoustic, so the guitarist brings out the synth guitar.
8.
At which point, everybody reading this topic promptly looks at the top r/h corner of their screen.
I didn't until I read this & then scrolled up!
9. Good point!
10. Why not replace the strap button on the body with a floor pin & play it upright?

ohms?

Sounds like your guitarist is the one who needs the new rig if he's that loud? I'd try fiddling about with your EQ if you can't be heard. It depends on what sort of music you play & what sound you're after.
12. I have to have my Moog LPF on it's own PSU as it's noisy if put in a chain. So I'd try taking a pedal out the chain 1 at a time & see if you can narrow it down.
13. Mose home insurances will get you a like for like & is New for Old, so a "New" bass/amp/whatever would be supplied. However, most insurances will offer a cash settlement to replace it with a 2nd hand one. it sounds like your home ins co changes whom it uses as an underwriter each year.
14. My singer/guitarist has one of these & they're brilliant. He plugs his into a Microkorg & the tracking is really good. Comes in handy if I want to play some bass solos & he plays synth bass.
15. That young man's not too shabby on that thing! Gets a great sound too!
16.
The problem is that a lot of folks either don't want to have to pay a bit extra or are simply afraid to ask questions because they don't want to hear the truth, so they opt for the cheapest insurance and act like an ostrich when it comes to expecting cover in the event of a claim. I've declared to my insurance company that I play with other musicians in pubs and I've declared that it is a hobby that I get remuneration for (though it is so small the tax man laughed when we tried to offset our bands earnings against tax, we were told we were hobbyists and not to be so silly as to try and claim it is a 2nd income etc).
If you're getting paid anything, even just petrol money or paid in beer, then that could be classed as "business use" as there is an exchange going on. So it's always best to check with your insurer.
I checked and triple checked that my gear was covered for gigs, on numerous occasions before I clicked on 'buy' the insurance. It did cost me more than normal house insurance but I expected that. I have checked their T&C's and everything coincides with the conversations I've had with them. The only caveat is the limit on each item is no more than £1,500, upto a total that I can't remember for a number of items. So, as much as my Big Al is worth a little bit more than that, it doesn't get gigged much anyway at the moment, (more for my own enjoyment practicing at home).
If you need more than that, try a different insurer. Mine has a single article limit of £2500 & an overall chosen by me of £5k. Items over £2500 can be specified individually (such as the Mrs' engagement ring?).
17. I work in the insurance industry & know that my insurance covers me for. If you're not sure what yours covers, call the claims dept of your insurer & ask them. I've checked using my knowledge & also those of the claims & underwriting depts too. With my insurance it will also cover for business use if I want & I only have to specify individual items if they're over £2500 & not being used for "business purposes". If you need some help, PM me or ask me on here. WH, "Proffiesionally" can vary from insurer but here's what I have: Business Use

Specifically excluded from the Personal Belongings section but cover can be provided subject to the item being specified.
Specify by selecting 'Other clothing and personal effects' and infill the item description and sum insured.
Apply the following item level free format clause and infill the item description to extend cover to business use:
Business Use The PERSONAL BELONGINGS SECTION covers your (Infill) whilst being used for business or professional purposes.
18. I'm insured through my home insurance too. Covered out & about as long as it's with me & I'm not using it for professional purposes, it's covered. `If it's left in the car, then it needs to be locked in the boot & out of sight.
19. You can put in a replacement driver, but find the specs of your Ampeg driver & cab get a driver that has the same (or very close to) requirements (cab size & port requirements). A 4Ω driver would allow you to draw the full wattage from the amp. Downside is that full wattage probably wouldn't be noticed by anyone without a meter & you wouldn't be able to add another cab if you do need more volume (unless your amp runs at 2Ω). If you're putting a different driver in your cab, then some port tuning might be required. Tuning is done by changing the length of the port. If it's a tube, then that's not difficult, if it's a shelf, then it's not gonna be easy. Edited because a load of crap appeared in the post! Anyone else get that stuff
20. My Markbass combo sits in a corner of the living room. it's not on display but it's there ready for me to plug my bass into anytime I want to play & the pedal board is in it's flightcase next to it. So it gets regular use. And then when it's time to play with the band, it's a simple case of unplugging the mains & pulling the cover over, then pick it up.
21. You could always attack it with some sandpaper & give it that "road worn" look, instantly doubling the value of it!
22. Simple answer is put your combo on top of your 2x10 & see if you like the sound (& if there is any difference to what you hear). If you like the sound of your combo, swap your 2x10 for another 1x15.
23. Not sure if it's in with what you're looking for, but i good grooves are what you're after then try some Miloopa.
24. Standing in the middle of the river Spey with a fishing rod perhaps?
25. Where Black is a good colour for killing a lot of colours, certain colours will overpower it (such as green, which is a hard colour to get rid of) & also black is a crap undercoat unless you're painting the thing black*. Best primer colours are Grey which will kill all colours in a few thin coats or if you're going for yellow, gold or orange - Maroon (red led to be exact, but not sure if that's what you want to spray your bass with). Google what sort of paint you're priming over & find out what's fine with it. I tend to find that as long as there's no wax or oil on the surface then you should be fine (again, do check before commencing). *Edited to say, the OP does want a black bass, I'd still prime in grey & then finish in black.
