1.
[s]un[/s]fortunately there ARE no big bands today because of the MP3 dominated world we live in.

2. Thanks WC, I'm tempted by the lightweight and I prefer the look of the Ash SR600. I'm also tempted by the much cheaper GSR 180 Jazz copy because I currently play a heavy old Fender Jazz and I like the simplicity of a passive bass, but I imagine it wouldn't have the same depth of tone as the SR600.
3. What is the difference between the SR500 and SR600? Are they available with maple board? Which of the SR series is most suited to reggae, using flatwound strings for a clear deep smooth tone?
4. Thanks for the excellent review It would be interesting to compare this bass with the J&D model, which is more like a 'real' Jazz and much less expensive: http://www.musicstor...-BAS0007169-000 .
5. Sound advice Chien, thanks again
6.
OK I have modelled the two Kappalites and there is no doubt that the box you are using is far from ideal for the Kappalite 3015LF. Your box is less that 50 litres internally and that is ideal for the 12" but the 15" prefers a much bigger box. As is you probably have a small peak at about 100 -120Hz an a steady roll off from sbout 90. In the same cabinet, and with the right porting the same cabinet cold give an extra 6dB around the 40-60Hz area, the area that the Acme's are strong. Ironically the current thread would probably give you better results than the cab/speaker combination you have. On the plus side, the cabinet you have is small, neat and if it works for you, keep it. I don't think you could install a 12 in this cab without major surgery and I am not sure where you would put the ports. Are there any ports on the back?
Thanks very much for doing this for me It seems like you agree that it isn't worth changing the driver for the 12" version, although an extra 6dB around the 40-60Hz area sounds considerable - would that be significant in real life? Stevie provided fairly straightforward instructions for swapping drivers in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/236510-can-i-improve-my-cabs-at-all-again/page__pid__2447061#entry2447061 There are no ports on the back and I'm nervous of cutting into the composite construction, but it is a possibility. I have 2 identical cabs and it would be very interesting to compare them, loaded with the 3015LF and 3012LF. Apologies again for derailing - perhaps any replies should go on the other thread, here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/236510-can-i-improve-my-cabs-at-all-again/page__pid__2447061#entry2447061
7. I have the FJB-6 as a back up for my 63 Fender and it is a great instrument, although I rarely play it because the Fender is my first love. They are built in the same Chinese factory that make Squier CVs, but it's better quality IMO and also better than my Mexican Fender and Indonesian G&L Jazz basses. I would say it's closer to a US Fender in terms of sound and build quality. Here's a review:
8.
Just relax........
Thanks Phil, I will take your advice - it's much easier to leave things as they are and I am happier with my rig than I ever have been, after 35 years of trial and error. It is all about compromise as you say and I've found a compromise that suits me, whilst not being 100% perfect. It was just people saying that the 3015LF is completely unsuited to the box and that it could even be damaged, that got me thinking. But it would need to be a considerable improvement to be worthwhile and not just a little bit of extra bass. I never push the cabs to distortion and they sound great, despite the science saying they shouldn't. Only the ACME 12" sounds better to my ears and I will buy one, if it ever becomes available in a lighter box and produced in this country.
9.
Give us the inside measurements of the cab and I will model it for you.
Thanks a lot, it's 42x42x30 mms, less the space the driver and handle take up. Please reply by PM so we don't take over this thread
10. I have a Squier Bronco in which I replaced the pick up for a Brandoni cool rails. When I fitted the new pick up it had very low output because I wired it wrong and it took 2 more goes to get it right. It could be that yours is wired wrong too and it's easy to check - I'm no electrician but I managed to fit mine and change the wiring 3 times without any soldering. If not, I recommend the Brandoni cool rails as a good replacement for £40 including next day delivery. Just a thought
11.
measure the internal dimensions to get the volume and then plug all the info into WinISD to see what you get. With a new baffle and prosily new/modified ports it'll be a fair bit of work. Out of interest what are Flyte cabs made of to be so light?
Thanks but I won't do WinISD because I don't understand graphs and I have no time to learn. The internal dimensions are very small, since it is basically the tiniest cab you could possibly squeeze a 15" driver into. I just wanted a rough idea of what the difference would be if I changed the 3015LF for a 3012LF. Stevie suggested I should expect more low end and I wondered if there were any other considerations and whether it would be worth the effort and expense. The Flite cabs are made of a composite material, I'm not sure of the details but I think it's foam sandwiched between thin ply. They are very light, under 10kg loaded with the 3015LF and having got used to such lightweight, I am loathe to change them. They also sound better than any other 15" cab that I've tried, which is quite a few, but I've been advised that they are too small to get the best from the 3015LF.
12.
@redstriper If you want to get a somewhat accurate idea of what to expect from swapping the drivers in your Flyte cabs, .........
I was just looking for a rough idea of what the difference would likely be
13.
ACME 15"? typo I would think? Question - and not being fecicious - why not buy an ACME?
Sorry, it should have read ACME 12". Why not buy an ACME? - Because they are too expensive and also much heavier than my current cabs.
if you are serious about building a cab then there are plenty of people here who will have a go at helping you, why not start another thread and see what we come up with
I am not serious about building a cab - I am considering replacing the 3015LF in my current cab with a 3012LF as suggested above and I wondered if anyone here with experience of this driver may have any comments.
14. My requirement is for a lightweight cab suitable for dub reggae, so I do not need much treble or upper midrange. I currently use a small cab loaded with an Eminence 3015LF, which sounds good but it doesn't go as low as the new ACME 15" cab. It would sound better in a larger box, but I don't want to do that. Stevie suggested replacing the driver with a 3012LF, which would be better suited to the smaller box dimensions and sound deeper than the 3015LF. Would anyone else here care to comment on this idea, before I take the plunge? Specifically, what differences in tone and volume should I expect and is it a worthwhile modification, considering the work and cost? Apologies for the derailment.
15. Thanks for the fast response neepheid So - the red and white are joined and left loose. Green and bare are joined and go to earth - where is that? Black is hot - where is that? Sorry to be so useless!
16. I got the cool rails pick up from Brandoni, but I don't know how to wire it into my Bronco bass - can anyone help? It has 5 wires - black, red, green, white and bare. Any help would be highly appreciated
17. Thanks for the advice fellas . I will take my time before doing anything and I may end up doing nothing at all I haven't noticed any chuffing from the port and I haven't heard any distortion, so I don't think I'm overpowering them. I don't really want to go back to larger cabs like the simplex, because these are so practical, size and weight wise. They are suitably stuffed on all inside surfaces, there is no bracing and they sound like congas if you tap them. But they sound smooth and clear, with no buzzes or distortion - I would just like a bit more depth for reggae gigs with no PA support. Stevie's suggestion of fitting a Kappalite 3012LF is appealing and the instructions sound simple enough even for me! It would be interesting to hear the difference between the 3012LF and 3015LF in identical cabs...... if I can get round to it
18. Another question - Is it likely the drivers will come to any harm by being in the wrong size cabs?
19. Thanks Bill, it's the old compromise between size, efficiency and deep tone. I'm willing to compromise for the sake of size and light weight, they still sound surprisingly good and deep enough for stage monitoring when there's a decent PA. It's actually a relief to not have to take a jig saw to them
20.
There's a gang of very knowledgable cab folk here - the best way is to kick off a thread and ask questions like i did. You'll be steered on the right direction. Don't just guess - ask away !
Thanks - I have: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/236510-can-i-improve-my-cabs-at-all-again/
21. I have two 15" Flite cabs which I love, they are very lightweight and they sound great, but I believe they are all wrong from a technical standpoint. I play reggae and I like a very deep tone, with no upper mid or treble. I've been told the cabs are too small for the drivers (Eminence Kappalite 3015LF) and the port is too small. They sound great to me but I borrowed an ACME 12" cab and it went much lower than mine do and I wonder if I could get more deep bass extension and possibly more volume level by adding a larger port(s) in a similar way to this post: http://basschat.co.u...-my-cab-at-all/ The main problem is, these cabs are made of a composite comprising a foam sandwich between 2 very thin pieces of ply. This makes for a very lightweight cab, but I'm not sure how it will take to being cut with a jig saw. In fact, thinking about it makes me shudder - I don't want to ruin these great cabs. Any advice would be much appreciated. Steve.
22. I'm watching this thread with great interest - wondering if I should do the same thing with my 15" Flite cabs. They are apparently too small for the drivers and I've been told the port is too small. The problem is that they are made of a foam filled composite, so I'm not sure how they will take to being cut - also not sure what size ports to fit.
23. Dunc bought a Jazz bass from me today and it was a pleasure to meet him. Hope you're enjoying it Dunc
