1. Thanks for the comments chaps I bought one and it was a nice bass, especially considering the price. The tone was well suited to reggae with flat wound strings, although not quite as smooth as my old Jazz bass. Build quality was very good, intonation, action etc. all excellent and it was a nice weight at just under 9 pounds. The scratch plate was horrible though, with sharp edges but it looked fine without it - no hidden routes. However...... I sold it within a week because I couldn't get on with the mahoosive neck. I'm used to a 60s Jazz neck and this one felt huge. I'm very tempted to go for the JB-20 Jazz bass now
2. Not sure if this is relevant but a friend of mine was in Bilboa Spain last night at a huge fiesta with music and hundreds of people dancing in the streets until the next morning. He only heard one song in English - this was it:

4. Sorry if this has already been posted, some of you may be interested in this 5 part documentary if you haven't seen it before -
5. Good luck with that - he was going to bring it for me to try last week, but never showed and I live down the road - nice guy!
6.
For me, it's the offset body that I find off-putting.
Same here, my old Jazz has a Precision shaped body and I much prefer it. It's a shame Fender don't make a Jazz bass with a Precision body. Leo did go on to do that with the G&L JB-2, but I was disappointed with the tone so I sold mine.
7. From Jaco to Familyman, from bridge to neck pup and everything in between Most Jamaican reggae from the 70s was recorded with Jazz basses. It is still Aston Barrett and Robbie Shakespeare's favoured instrument.
8. Nice looking bass, the strings could be Pyramid Golds
9. I think soundcloud accepts wav files. Are the strings all round wounds?
10. Quality bit of kit here...... and the bass ain't too shabby either
11. The influence of volume adjustments on the overall tone produced is significant with a passive Jazz bass.
12. I only use the neck pick up with the tone rolled off on my passive Jazz bass. I don't like the tone when the volume is higher than about 75% - it allows too much upper mid and treble through.
13. I am interested to hear how you get on with the Pyramid Golds, I found they lack thump and sound very similar to TIs. Have you tried rotosound tru bass nylon strings? They are high gauge but low tension and they have a deep thumpy tone.
14.
This is the first instance of such a thing happening. As far as I understand it, you are NOT in breach of copyright IF; you do not specify what you are playing, i.e.; you don't explain what the melody is, you don't claim ownership, and you at the very least, give credit to the relevant sources. I'd be interested to know what the cover was, and how the cover was made and what it included. I've done covers myself and have thus far had no issues.
Hi James - was it you that posted that brilliant cover of Superstition on youtube? If so did you get permission from Stevie? This is the song my friend covered, he did ask for permission but he had no reply until it went on youtube. He played all the instruments and someone else did the vocal. He gave full credit to the songwriter, in addition to an undertaking to use the recording strictly for non-commercial purposes. This is the original version -
15. Can anyone answer my OP? Do you have to ask permission from the copyright holder before performing or recording a cover version? Is it a legal requirement? There are a lot of videos of covers on youtube - have they all been cleared by the writers? The reason I ask is because a friend recorded a cover version and posted it on youtube, without getting any permission from the copyright holder. The original composer has gone mad and demanded it be removed, which it has - but they are still very angry.
16.
Dreadful! Sorry, to me that sounds mince!
Agreed.
17.
Behind the beat as we wrote it, meant the song had a real nice groove!
Would you mind letting us hear the song or part of it, so we can hear what you mean?
18. Do people generally ask permission from the copyright holder before performing or recording a cover version? Is it a legal requirement? There are a lot of videos of covers on youtube - have they all been cleared by the writers?
19.
With a digital multitrack recording you could see whether that was the case or not, by lining up the drum and bass tracks and seeing where the hit is on both.
I often look at how the tracks line up in my home recordings. Some musicians habitually play slightly ahead and some slightly behind the kick drum, but the best sounding tracks are when all the instruments line up well. I sometimes move instruments to line up better and I have shifted entire tracks very slightly to improve the feel.
20. How does this sound?

22.
.... each note sounds to me as though it sits bang on the rhythm.
Agreed
