Which head is best for me? Currently using Ashdown ABM 900 iii
I'll definitely do that. Thanks for the advice on the Orange gear. I'm not really sure to be honest. If you check that link I posted in my first post you'll see what my band plays. We recorded in Paris over the summer and got signed to a label over there so I'm expecting big things. It just sounded HUGE and DEEP and GNARLY. If you get me? The guitarists in my band do a lot of quirky riffs and I like to fill out the low end with a big deep sound.
nice dude congrats, pretty different end of the spectrum from me but nice stuff, to save you getting a whole new rig you could try putting a, svt kinda sounding dirt infront of your amp, as the weight similar to the orange maybe coming from the tubes? so something like a vt bass or bb pre amp might get you closer for cheaper, or there are absolute bargain heads at the minute in the for sale section like the svt pro 6 which has the ampeg growl. https://myspace.com/syruss/music/songs link to my old band if you listen to the songs twist of fate and waiting for my life thats the svt pro 6 with a di and a mic infront of my 610 obviously a bit heavier than you guys but you can hear the sound. andy -
My local music shop doesn't have that much variety of stuff other than Ashdown so it's a shame I can't try different cabs out myself. I really liked the Ampeg set up I used though, so I'll keep an eye out for any ampeg cabs. Do you think my head is worth keeping or is there better I could be using? T
i would maybe try with different cabs first your amp is probably fine, what music do you play? what did you like about the ampeg setup that you think you current setup is missing? andy -
Nice playing but what about the pedal lol. God damn marketers.
i know right! andy

most of my board is guitar effects or used to be guitar effects, the only way to know is to try them. andy
I actually tried the 610hlf last week with various settings on my amp and to be honest it sounded muddy and not worth the price they are! Has anyone had any experience with Orange heads?
they arent sealed like the 810 so you have to be really careful the way you eq, however they not for everyone. ive got lots of time for orange heads! currently use the monster terror bass 1000 which is honestly a fantastic head for what i do! so much head room to push out the lows i need distorts like a proper valve head into brutal overdrive and with the 1000 you will never ever not be loud enough. but ive also had an ad140b and that was amazing but at the time i had a clean bass sound and being all valve and back then using only a 115obc so didnt push enough are really but again really nice over drive. now the ad200 is a monster! same/similar pre amp to the terror bass but with the valve power section its got much more weight behind each note! the eq isnt as useable as others but it defiantly is more useful than some will give it credit for. andy -
Try some other cabs with your head, you may be surprised (in a good way)
totally agree, and if you like ampeg the cabs do have a noticable effect on the sound so maybe try a 610hlf? andy -
you've heard the old tosh we churn out Phil, you only need one bass for rock mate, guitards now using a Les Paul as well as the strat and it drives me nuts with the swap overs, we've told him to do it as little as possible and let us (me and drummer) start some intros while he does, but what with his reluctance for a set list ( a whole other thread!) its all becoming a real issue with the tumbleweed blowing between numbers ( I have no stage front craft)
see thats the difference, our setlist puts all our drop c songs together so the change only happens once and as my 5er has a low c its a change we dnt need to make at the same time and it can happen in a break between songs, and its no trouble for our singer to chat for a few seconds andy

im gonna be switching now that ive got two basses im happy with, why should our guitarist have all the fun! and they do sound different the jazz does have a little bit more growl than the mody but only just, can play the set with either but it takes like 20 seconds to change. andy

Is the amp or the cab most important when you want a good sound?
0175westwood29 replied to gjones's topic in Amps and Cabs
tbh a good amp and cab will either make someone good sound good or someone bad sound very bad. i have seen bassists absolutely kill it and sound amazing on a behringer ultrabass stack, that was enough for me to understand that a lot of the sound comes from your fingers or the way you play the amp does play a big part but its not all about the gear but the gear does help(if that made sense) andy -
Squier vintage modified jazz bass
0175westwood29 replied to Absolute Beginner's topic in Bass Guitars
awesome basses got me a 5er a week ago, very quick neck and awesome pickups nice output considering its passive, mine are the duncan designed pickups. keeps up with my modulus which new was an 1800 quid bass, also being a fender if you want to upgrade at any point its easy to drop in new pickups tone controls etc, im changing all the hardware on mine nothing to do with the quality i just want to have all black hardware. for a first bass its hard to see a better bass for the money. andy -
this needs to go in the for sale forum buddy

can't bump or reply to my wanted ad in the sales section
0175westwood29 replied to 0175westwood29's topic in Site News
ah ok guys i see your point, but on the flip side does this just not mean several posts about the same thing? ie ill now have to post again? andy -
Just go out of the head into the first cab and then link the cabs together Andy
-
as the title states my wanted add is not visible as its gone down the list, yet cant bump it back to being visible is there a reason? i know people will find it with the search but i seem unable to respond to anything in that section, having paid £20 to use the section for a year how come i cant fully use it? andy
-
sounds like a beast, keeps up really well with the modulus just a process of getting used to it now. andy
-
i just got a rack eq and the boss limiter to help protect my amp as i tune low and use fuzz and octaves so just wanted the limiter to catch the peaks and then use the rack eq to do the job of a thumpinator as it has a 25hz high pass but can do a bit of added shaping with it as well. andy

Looks like the vintage version of the b7k. Not that exciting for me but a good idea Andy
-
have you tried any cabinets with it? or what do you have at the minute? andy
-
without restringing or buying say a detuner to open up those extra few notes, id say as you already have the 5 and if your happy with it id go with that. i have two because my basses are in different tuning to make my life easy andy
All I'm saying is you questioned how a 1x12 could "beat" an 8x10 and suggested a placebo effect; I merely offered a reason as to why a 1x12 might be perceived to "beat" an 8x10 Edit: not sure I explained myself well in the first post on this matter
i get you dude its ok andy
-
Maybe the 8x10 is a particularly crap example of the 8x10 concept, and also bear in mind the comparison was centred around the tone of the cabs. The 1x12 is more focused in the mids due to a superior (probably!) design so the perceived superior volume is easy to understand in context
cant really compare the tones of an 810 to a 112 fairly though can you? andy

ive got a beasty mutli unit coming from tom!
