10 Things That Need To Change To Save Independent Venues
0175westwood29 replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
actually put music on the right night of the week! so many venues near us will only do music on a wednesday or tuesday, you can get some people there but they arent happy unless the venue is full which mid week it just wont be alot of the time. also covers bands can walk into paid gigs and charge 200 notes or more for a evening, dnt have a problem but then the originals band asks 50 quid and its like were asking way to much! andy -
Just a quick update for anyone interested (that includes you, Antone) I now have the power amp! I've been looking at the functions, and there are several possibilities to play with. I will soon have a Barefaced '69er and a Barefaced Super Twin, each are 4 ohms. I can: - run both cabs from one channel, 1000w at 2 ohms - run each cab from each channel, 800w at 4 ohms each side In this second mode, I can play around with crossovers. The '69er is a sealed cab which sounds superb across the range, although when pushing the low frequencies at volume, it does not stay very clean (sounds great in many applications, but not what I'm after ATM) The super Twin is ported, and can handle bass very cleanly at high volume. I can put anything under 90hz through the Super Twin, and anything over 90Hz through the '69er. The theory is that it will retain maximum clarity at very high volume, There are a variety of crossover frequencies to choose from, but 90hz is the one Alex has recommended. Then there is the low pass filter - worth playing with, although I already have a LPF pedal. There is also a sub bass setting, but I'm a bit scared to play with that one! I can also set a limiter so that a gig-share-idiot can't blow the speakers by cranking the levels (although in theory, each cab can handle the full 800w) Can't wait to get the new cab so I can start playing!
holy crap ill hear you from here! andy

Look at the "pro's" in the OP.
Of course I still need to power the pedal board. Amp and pedal power supply plug directly into a 2 outlet socket on the board. I then only need to find 1 plug socket, not 2. That's less cables, and less faff.
Absolutely, that's only 1 cable running across the stage. If my amp stays on top of my cab I'd have 4 cables running across the stage. (Instrument cable/ effects in/ effects out/ boost channel footswitch).
It still seems wholly practical, tidy, and efficient.
can kinda see if you use the effects loop, but id worry that if the speakon got damaged then its alot of work to get things going again. andy
-
dnt really see what you gain from having the amp on the board still need power to your pedal board and you'll have your speaker cable running across the stage, id rather have a 10m guitar lead and get an extra extension lead andy

ive always found that they go with ampeg stuff really well, my old ad140b sounded awesome through there 810 and 610 cabs.
-
struggling to find anyone near me with the 810s im interested in trying? local venue has the ampeg, anyone in the south west have a ashdown or swr they let me try?
The way I read it, it's marketed more towards the super clean, more hi fi end of the market (albiet with the option to add colour*), so is is a different beast to the AD200 *orange, obviously
sort of sitting in the same kinda league as the 2001rb gk heads, the gain stage and blend is foot switchable so it basically 2 channels its is getting more interesting but 1000w of clean power as the bt1000 is scary loud! andy
As I said earlier I've been very pleasantly surprised by my Mag 810, not a dark sounding cab by any means and pairs very well with my old GKs. There's always one on ebay for £200, should be easy to sell on if you don't like it. I'm finding the nearfield sound great on stage, I run it at the volume of the drums and don't have to work the head hard at all to generate low end. My old SVT setup used to project the sound past me and only sounded great in the crowd but I'm finding this rig relatively consistent around a room.
cool may try and find one to try out. andy

Theres so many modes im sure you can switch between input a and b and send only thru output a Andy

could always grab a trusty boss ls2 andy
Nearly! The touch of octave -2 on the top left is accidental - that's how it was when I took it out of the case, I would've turned it back to zero before using it. The top two are in separate channels of the 2-channel mixer because when I make other silly noises I often mix with an OC-2 to keep some beef going on. The third one is a synth-modded one I bought on here the other day, so I don't really have three OC-2s because that one sounds totally different (and fricking amazing). I may well do away with one of the parallel OC-2s soon, I don't really use the one on the top-right much. Still I'll probably keep it in case the other one breaks, which it probably won't. It occurred to me last night that with the -2 octave oscillator in the Octavius Squeezer and the potential for 3 stacked Whammies in the M9 I could maybe drop my notes by a full 14 octaves if I wired them all in series. I don't suppose it would make much audible sound but I may well sh*t myself in the process.
nice andy
This what my board looks like at the moment but I suppose three OC-2s isn't strictly 'essential'...
aren't they all the same aswell? for me tuner has to be on there and then id probs go for my od pedal the flux drive. andy
And all the modification features are on the outside!
indeed just saw its actually new! that might need trying out! andy
Exactly or do you
its very nice and orange lol that hartke's a bit to old liking the look of the swr, but have played thru ashdown cabs at our practice space and was impressed, and the mag 810 could be grabbed new for about 450, i know i cant take video online to seriously but its something to go on. andy

i would say thats a bad idea, the thunderverb 200 can do duel duty because its got big enough transformers in it, the bass frequencies will still mess up and destroy a guitar cab, also there guitar cabs wnt take the wattage the bass ones can. andy
Be interesting to see how it compares to the TB1000. Possibly more versatile. I'd also like to see a rear shot to see whats going on. orange sleeve extra....hmmmm.....
im guessing same power stage, so will be scary loud! but with the pre amps will be super clean. however just saw that sleeved its like 1599? thats from a mate but sorry orange ill get the ad200b andy
-
true but considering how much the crush guitar heads are this will hopefully be around the price of the terror heads. andy
-
blender for the 2 pre amp stages andy
-
this looks like a nice head, and considering how nice the solid state guitar heads sound this should be pretty interesting. like the sound of a clean side to there amp can see alot of people liking this if the price is right i might look into one for a second amp. https://www.orangeamps.com/products/bass-guitar-amp-heads/ob-1k-bass-amplifier/ andy

for me i always go post, i dnt do anything massive with the eq but it does effect the how things sound with my effects so the pa will always get a post eq signal, andy
Not owned a single 8x10 cab myself but did have two 4x10 trace elliot cabs. They both sounded great and it was entirely more versatile for smaller gigs. That said a trace 8x10 was up for sale on the forum for only a couple of hundred the other week, might still be there if you like the trace stuff.
dnt get me wrong do like the old school trace stuff but want something a bit more modern. andy
"...i get the ampeg is mid heavy and have used this cab before but wondering if there's something more suited to me, needs to be able push the deep lows i need, but still have nice highs" You are describing word for word what the Bergantino NV412 is all about! Compared to an 810 or 610, the NV412 has a more extended low and top end whilst still retaining a nice mid punch. It makes your effects sound so much better, specially overdrive. distortion and fuzz....And it's loud, very, very, very loud! It weights considerably less than an 810 and it's very easy to move around. Just to clarify, I'm not saying all this because I have mine up for sale, only offering my advice because I think it's exactly what you want in a cab.
did consider a 412 but the only ones im familiar with are out my price range. andy
Also as a word of advice with an 8x10 buy used, they are hard to sell and generally only a bit more than their 4x10 counterpart so if you're getting one you want to loose as little on it as possible and be committed to the fact you're going to use it for years, I think I've had mine for 5 and it is still the best bass tone I've ever had (think guitarist stood infront of 2 4x12's) you don't grow up wanting a stack of high efficiency 1x12's behind you
yeh i would be keeping this for a while. been watching a few videos the swr seems very punchy, does anyone have the frequency response of the cabs ive listed cant find the info on the swr? andy
