1.
to be a bit more verbose in response... going straight into the desk as a line level input will be worse than going via a di box taking a di signal from the back of your amp into a desk will allow you to shape the sound a little and will mean that your amp's preamp is affecting your bass sound a tad. On some/most amps with a di out there's a pre/post switch somwehere which then routes the signal to the di either before the eq section (ie it has no effect on the di signal) or post eq (the eq section affects the di signal). a sound engineers favourite is often (as described above) to connect the bass straight into the di box and then off to the desk and then take a line signal from the di into the amp on stage, totally depends on the venues you're playing though...
see now i have only ever been given one or the other, before they come up to plug the cables and di box in i just plug the mic cable into my di out, andy
2.
from a bass players point of view: yes from a sound engineers point of view: no as an engineer unless there is a specific reason not too i would always run a di box before the amp using the link out on the di to spilt the signal into the amp the reason for this is even in the event of amp failure i'm still getting signal from the di box and can work on fixing a solution (ussually putting bass into the wedges for a start) and not interupt the bands set also some amps create a serious amount of buzz and hum which sounds terrible and can be easily avoided by using a pre amp di box
i can see your point but for anyone who gets a bit of there sound from there amp say like a distortion or fuzz they gonna sound quiet nasty. for me for recording ive done both but much prefer the di out andy
3. awesome amp! good luck man! andy
4. i used to use the blue triangle dunlop picks, not sure of thickness, always worked for me, just use what feels comfortable. andy
5. i use a mesa boogie flux drive to push my amp into a really nice heavy overdrive which can get the attack that i like. also if i dime the gain on the terror it gets pretty brutal andy
6. someone wants to be the edge of bass?! i use to have a mxr carbon copy and ehx memory boy, to be honest i used them totally wrong as modulated reverb to fill out the sound of my old 3 piece. they were very nice delays tho, really nice dark repeats i always used to try and write around the delay make a point of it. andy
7. back to the top
8.
I just prefer a clanky sound. I like to hear absolutely everything that goes on, so I like having severely cut bass frequencies. We have a dude that makes us sound good FOH; What does it matter what I/we sound like on stage? When we rehearse I use two Workingman's 10s and have a much fuller tone. The other band members are well aware of, and practice, careful EQing so no problems. Truckstop
you guys obviously know what your doing so this not meant at you, but shouldn't a sound man just be reflecting the sound of the band? obviously adjusting for the room etc, also dnt most places where you go through the pa have monitors? so i can always hear myself be weird if that sounds different to the sound coming from the amp. andy
9.
Ah man, looking forward to your thoughts on that when its in hand! When are you expecting it Andy? Lefty, that's lovely looking pedal!
hopefully next month sometime think its being put together now, hope it gets to me so i can use for my up and coming recording! cant wait to get the tarkin going! andy
10. best thing would be to a/b the heads and cabs of against each other obviously its not norm easy to do this. andy
11. what are you actually doing other than killing people if they get to close? andy
12.
The jack does fit the input, but as people have said, the manual only states about the speakon only? I may just buy a Speakon to jack lead and get more leads when I get a new cab
if it fits it will be fine, dnt worry if you feel better having a speakon to jack go down that route. andy
13. dnt be intimidated by players who have been playing for years, use them as inspiration the first players who inspired me to pick up the bass were people like cliff burton, geezer butler, geddy lee and justin chancellor. some crazy good players but they all had to start somewhere so just remember dnt feel down just because you dnt become awesome in the first few weeks dude. finding people to play with always helps you progress, if you can play with a drummer really helps you progress! ifound my current band through friends on facebook but before that my very first band met on gumtree! andy
14. would never pay to try out a bass. andy
15. cant wait! the teasers ive been sent look sweet! we geeked out a bit on the art work and even the colours of the leds! andy
16.
Happened to me with a Ric. Coveted a Ric, Bought a Ric, played the Ric, Ric stayed under bed for a year...sold the Ric.
same thing! got a 1977 ric but just didnt sit right, however id do still really want one! andy
17. i spend alot of my time on youtube! looking at product reviews, music videos and interviews of bands i like. occasionally ill get a link pop up to a band ive never heard of, and recently this making me look bad as most of the new bands i find have female bassists or lead singers!!! kinda hard to say i found this new band like their music, everyone just thinks im a bit of a perv! ie the first time i said i was loving the music from a Brazilian all girl metal band the first words from a friend were " oh yeh Brazilian! " anyone else have this problem? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45nftQN0IoI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjsAloS0ctk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdT7M4f2L9A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVXoC-95zDk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JgNTQbDvlw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc6lhFWhofA also shows my pretty varied taste in music! lol andy
18.
What's it got?!
fuzz, octave (based on the pearl 1 up 1 down), chorus and reverb the chorus and octave can both blend with the fuzz. :-) andy
19. they sound awesome through a 610hlf! well did when i had them?! andy
20.
How are you defining getting lost in the mix? I agree for some sounds like we were discussing in your other thread the amp and cab add a lot to the sounds, but for others... when I was gigging more I lost count of the number of times the PA would take the bass DI before the amp- you chat about what it should sound like if you need but otherwise I've tended to just trust the PA guy's professionalism.
most amps will sound different in the mix, some to your ear will sound further back say, others more pronounced but the change in amp does change the sound, however you can make alot of amps sound similar so i do get you in that regard. personally i wouldnt want a venue taking a di before my amp, they can plug in to the di on the head. andy
21. but if you not getting noticed in the mix then that a problem that starts at the beginning got nothing to do with the pa? or if you get lost in the mix could be a sound guy thinking he needs to eq your bass a certain way. the sound from your amp really does dictate the sound your going to give the pa. andy
22. it depends very much on the sound you go for, if i when't to a cleaner amp it would defiantly be noticed in the mix the sound my swr amp had in the mix was very different to my orange. andy
23.
Thanks for the answers guys. Cabs will be a pair of NY121s. Not sure if there are two inputs on the back of these....there was on my old 151HR. If there are 2 then ill daisy chain if not then different leads. I was concerned about using standard jack speaker leads, I thought it was necessary to use speakons with 500W output amps?
good quality jack to jack leads will be fine, or you can always get a speakon to jack lead, i have one aswell as a standard speakon lead as some cabs we use on gigs like old marshalls or ampegs have a jack input. andy
24. personally i wouldnt bother? andy
