1.
The whole question of what sounds 'good' or what is 'best' is so fraught with subjectivity and so confused by variables as to be a debate akin to nailing a jelly to a wall. We may recline upon science yet experience tells us that what is stated to be 'right' does not always sound right. Examples abound of 'perfect' rigs sounding good one night and bad the next. We pursue the chimera of tonal excellence through GAS, deep reading and microscopically detailed enhancements to our equipment. Yet in my opinion it is only at the highest levels of the trade and in the most controllable performance environments that near-consistency can be sustained from one night to the next. At the end of all, we must simply accept that for most of us a definitive and repeatable outcome is beyond reach. All we may hope for is the occasional delight when everything comes together by chance.
I largely agree with what you have said, other than I think you can end up with a set up that sounds good more often than not, my old Mesa 1516 sounded great on pretty much every stage I remember playing, my current Mark Bass set up sounds great 80% of the time...to me the Mesa was my ultimate rig, the Mark Bass is good but falls short on more occasions than I remember the Mesa doing. Anyway this thread has inspired me, tomorrow night I will run a 6x10 set up with the Mark bass head, if I am happy with the results I will run the 6x10 set up with the Hiwatt head at next Friday's support slot
2. Rock god indeed
3. I have three questions......Why?......Why? and Why?
4. I have not brought from the Stevenage store but Luton has relieved of decent sums of money on more than one occasion, they are bad people with stores full of shiny nice things that make your bank balance turn red, of course your bank balance is emptied with the best possible customer service
5. I have never tried 8x10 but it is a classic set up, I loved 2x15 and 4x10 and 1x15 sounds but the best sound I ever had was from a Mesa Boogie 1516 which was something along the lines of 1x15, 1x12, 2x8 and a horn, the closest I can get now would be 6x10 I may try it on Sunday I hope you 8x10 set up sounds great...just think only 2 4x10's to carry!
6.
Thats just silly
Tell me about it...not a Yamaha BB in sight, what am I thinking
7. My babies
8. Here is my current guitars...sadly not seeing a lot of use at the moment
9. Ok,finally got round to taking a photo of the current family......enjoy
10. Yeah, I tend to be exhausted the day after most gigs, I still put everything into each gig so am knackered and ache the day after....so perfect for a 4 hour recording session this afternoon then.....and next week a 4 hour practice, and the following week a radio session....not really thought that one through have I!
11. I brought a Black on Black Strat 1firstly because I liked it, secondly it was the iconic guitar edge used on the live at Red Rock gig so I guess they do have a decent tie to Fender, but quite why either need to make shrewd financial investments is slightly beyond me, between then don't they own pretty much everything anyway?
12. Our vocalist brought a brand new SM58 for £40.00 unsurprisingly it was a fake, the first obvious difference was the weight, the fake weighed a fraction of the the original we have, it sounded ok, don't know how long it would have lasted, he chucked it away because it was a fake.....£40.00 for a brand new SM58 what was he expecting...what is it they say..."if it sounds too good to be true...." muppetry if you ask me
13. Best advice I can offer is to get you amp high enough or tilted so it is pointing at your ears rather than your ankles, ears work much better than ankles for picking up sounds
14. I am a big fan of new strings, I start to notice after the second gig that the strings are losing their edge, unfortunately I can't afford to change them every other gig so they have to last a couple of months or so, but by the time I take them off I can't wait to get that crisp edge back
15. I used to gig a Les Paul, then a Junior, then a 335, always took my Strat as a back up, ended up selling the others and just using the Strat, unadventurous, yes, predictable...again yes, Swiss army knife of guitar oh yes.....mine is a beautiful Japanese 62 std reissue in Lake Placid Blue with a set of Custom Shop 69's under the hood
16. Our PA guru is not a fan of JBL gear he feels it is way too expensive to repair when compared to any of its rivals, he hires out EV gear, our drummer has just brought the ZLX15P as a drum fill, it is a cracking bit of kit and is fully useable as a FOH speaker Link is below [url="http://www.google.co.uk/aclk?sa=L&ai=CVZ6MM0x6U4rDIarSiwac2oDQCozJxvoEvIzAsJcBmO35jNMBCAkQASDezc8eKDZQ2c3drPj_____AWC7hrOD0ArIAQepAgfaStOTPrw-qgQjT9BIpAPOpNnaipJIM22fnSZ1AEbQJIkgB8JrnCMYoHqFdzrABQWgBiaAB6S82jGQBwHgEuqS36Gu56CwlgE&sig=AOD64_3_9P3tQ63TFALL2pARS8GQVwQ4_Q&ctype=5&rct=j&q=&ved=0CFcQ2CkwAA&adurl=http://www.phase1live.co.uk/sound-c16/pa-speakers-c18/active-pa-speakers-c20/zlx15p-active-1000-watt-class-d-powered-pa-speaker-single-speaker-p1126/s1150%3Futm_source%3Dgoogle%26utm_medium%3Dcpc%26utm_term%3Dev-zlx15p-active-1000-watt-class-d-powered-pa-speaker%26utm_campaign%3Dproduct%252Blisting%252Bads"]EV ZLX15P Active 1000 watt class d powered PA speaker
17. Mrs2611 and I have been to see a few tribute bands recently, we have seen Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, The Illegal Eagles and last night we went to Bedford to see Abba Reunion.....I have to say I was totally blown away by the musicianship and the quality of all of the bands I will probably never get to see any of these as the original bands but having seen these tributes I come away happy in the fact that I doubt seeing the original line up would be a much better experience. I think in this day and age where the selling of music is almost becoming secondary (due to the download culture) to live performance, I think these guys and girls have the right idea....I will be pushing both of my bands to make live performances something special. I don't know if any of the bass players from these bands are on BC but if you are, thanks for three wonderful evenings Rog
18. I have had a couple of Jedson's, A Les Paul copy and a Telecaster copy whilst neither were top notch both were very playable
19. I watched a bit of it on the Red button the other morning, I wasn't very impressed, I didn't the Debbie Harry was putting any effort into the vocals and I wanted to punch the guitarist for playing inappropriate solos during classic hits. Mrs2611 said exactly what I was thinking, "well we won't need to bother going to see Blondie will we" Shame really they were one of the seminal bands of the late 70's and early 80's
20. I personally have a lot of love for the Tokai ALS48 (Les Paul) our guitarist prefers mine to his proper Gibson LP, pop a set of SD59's in place of the standard pickups and it will sound as good as it looks and plays. An ALS48 with upgraded pickups should still come in within your budget
21. For me, if it is your favourite bass, you use it onstage all the time and if some scumbag stole it you would hunt them down like Terminator and then remove their testicles with a cricket bat....then it's your high end bass
22. Anyone else with any ideas?
23. Marmite basses, people seem to either love them or hate them, I am afraid I fall into the latter category, I love the look and the way they play I just can't get a sound out of them that I am happy with, I am back to my favourite Precision played through a Tech 21 Bass VT pedal
24. I know we all get the hump on here with Rickenbacker's stance on fakes but I think Martin should hunt this guy with a pack of dogs
25. I had problems with DPD today, they text me twice asking where I wanted the item delivered, twice I said deliver to the house opposite, so they tried to deliver today, I was out, as expected, tried my next door neighbour who is disabled and can't get to the door so they took it away again! I needed it for tonight's gig so had to go chasing the driver round town to meet up and collect it, ok it was sorted in the end but it was a hassle I didn't need on a Friday afternoon, DPD's excuse...a computer glitch......B'stards
