  1. A bit of hunting on line reveals it was 1991 with the song "Flowers in the Rain" which had been on a TV show called Motormouth the morning of the day we supported them!
  2. This actually happened! High Hall in Birmingham circa 1986 supporting the aptly named band "Stress" I still have the recordings of the gig on cassette somewhere
  3. I also have a DR3 and I think it sucks, it lacks a midi out to allow it to control other devices, it is manageable but it is a pain, I also think it lacks enough variation in it's presets.....in fact, I really think I should sell it! I use it only as a back up now if I can't be bothered to programme the TR-8
  4. Much as Alexa's post is probably a very good idea an alternative would be to ensure your very first ever gig is supporting a band riding high in the charts in front of 2000 people, never having played through a PA before or even on a stage! Add to that the rest of your band are far more experienced than you and even they are pacing the dressing room with a severe attack of the "hebijeebies" If you manage to survive that then you never need be nervous on stage again!
  5. Strengths - I guess I am pretty creative when it comes to writing basslines and counter harmonies Weaknesses - I struggle to stay focused on the little things, mixing sessions drive me potty! 4 hours to get the reverb right on a 30 second section, yep, the mix sounded great in the end but I just can't focus to that level!
  6. I have always tended to change my strings pretty frequently as I love the sound of fresh round wounds, however, in my new band I needed a couple of basses tuned to D, one to gig with, one for rehearsals so I ended up using a battered parts bin Precision which had a really old set of round wounds on it, part way through the rehearsal I realised that this parts bin bass sat in the mix much better than my other Precision with far newer strings on it.....I shall not be changing the strings on a couple of Precision's for a while
  7. Just played my first gig with my new band this afternoon and all I can remember thinking was "bloody hell I have remembered more songs than I thought I had!"
  8. My mum was a concert pianist, my dad a decent drummer in his day, my mum taught my son from a very young age to play the piano, even though he hasn't played for a few years he is still a very capable pianist if he wants to be, my three step brothers are all musicians (after coming to see me play when they were a lot younger) James is a competent drummer and guitarist, Rich is a very competent guitarist, keyboard player, bassist, singer / songwriter and Jack is a brilliant blues guitarist....my sister and step sister have no musical ability that we know of!
  9. I had an SVT 7 Pro the other year and struggled to find anything of that classic Ampeg sound in it so it was sold on, I still use an old Ampeg B1E in my studio as both a practice amp and a nice line out signal for recording, I have far more time for that than I did the SVT 7 Pro
  10. Personally I love Kirsty McColl's version of A New England!
  11. It looks exactly the same as a "Squier P-Bass neck I have lying around and that has a "By Fender" decal on the ball section of the headstock so would seem to match this one, mine has a Fender 50th anniversary sticker on the back which looks like it was originally on there, which. considering that was in 1996 would fit with his time frame of having owned it for 20 years The body was reasonably decent and now graces a fretless Precision, the neck was pretty horrid hence why it is still lying about unused!
  12. I am constantly listening to new music, it gives me great comfort that great music doesn't cease to be made just because I have grown up, discoveries in recent years would include MGMT, Mystery Jets, Idles and Parquet Courts amongst many others
  13. Ouch!! I did similar many years back, on the day of Sack The Drummer's biggest gig to date supporting Blyth Power at Peterborough Beer Festival we were finishing off ply lining our band van when muggins here, not paying attention managed to hammer my thumb rather than the nail I should have been aiming at, cue much screaming and blood loss! I stuck it in ice water for a couple of hours took loads of pain killers and got through the gig in true punk style with blood all over my bass by the end of the gig, strangely it didn't actually hurt during the gig, a couple of days later my thumb was black and the nail fell off!
  14. Utter rubbish I am heading for 52 and have joined a proper "rock" band a couple of weeks ago, the singer's dad writes the songs and plays rhythm guitar, he, the drummer and myself are all over 50 the lead guitarist and singer and both mid to late 20's, the band in one form or another has been running since 1984. I am entering my "Keef" phase which will hopefully see me rocking out for another 30 years or more strung out on drugs ( pain killers and antacids mostly) and the odd glass of red wine....not at the same time obviously! I will not know when I an too old as at that point I will be dead!
  15. Hi all, Can anyone confirm my thoughts please: All 57 JV Squires with a two tone sunburst finish would originally have had the maple boarded neck All 62 JV Squires with a three tone sunburst finish would originally have had a rosewood boarded neck. I have been offered a three tone sunburst with a maple boarded neck, the seller and I agree that both neck and body are genuine JV parts but I an not sure they were originally on the same bass Your observations please ladies and gents?
  16. Not really my cup of tea music wise but hell this is why I choose to play bass! https://ChakaKhan.lnk.to/LikeSugarID
  17. I value above anything else the ability to try gear before you buy it, that is priceless but, as I think is standard practice with PMT, if they haven't got it in stock you are required to pay a fairly hefty deposit for them to get it in to the local store, which I guess is fair enough, but it does make you want to be more certain before going to that length. Also I have to add from previous experience the shop were not good at getting it to the store on the day they said and remembering to tell me they had got it in...that coupled with an overly aggressive parking strategy from Northampton Council (yep, the bankrupt one!) it does make online more and more appealing. If I want to nip into PMT then I have to pay for 2? hours parking as there is simply no free parking within easy walking distance of the store
  18. I have brought a fair bit of new stuff from PMT in Northampton, they have always been straight with me, they know their stuff but they never seem to promote second hand stuff so I rarely go in there now. My favourite non local shop is Richtone in Sheffield as they have a good range of used stuff which has always been pretty keenly priced I like to go in to a music shop not necessarily looking to buy something specific and just have a browse of the used stuff and see if anything takes my fancy, I am less likely to do that with new gear when you have to factor how much you are going to lose in 1st owner depreciation
  19. I heard this discussed on Radio 6 during the week
  20. I am not playing! I have only six I can see hanging on the wall in my office, the rest don't count, out of sight, out of mind and all that!
  21. We used to do American Idiot in the covers band, we settled on looking around the venue, if there were kids present we would all go "Beep" in place of the offending words, no kids present we left the swear words in, it got quite funny as there were a few people who had come to see us at festivals that used to still scream "Beep" even when we played in a pub!
  22. Certainly the Pino aspect influenced me in looking for one, I have only scanned Ebay a few minutes ago looking for that elusive Pino Stingray fretless!
  23. A USA Sub bass will answer all your questions about Musicman basses! I have owned a few USA rays and never liked them, I have owned a couple of the far east built Sterling's and positively disliked them but I have not tried the cheapest Sub range. I came upon my USA sub a few years back and finally found the Stingray I had been hankering after for many years, it is currently sitting atop all the Precision's as my go too gigging bass. As for a USP, I personally think they are the best looking bass on the market, just aesthetically right, they have a very distinctive sound especially in their early wiring setup I would not part with mine now I have finally found the one that works for me!
  24. I got to 2 minutes odd and gave up, such a shame because he had a wonderful voice back in the day, In regard of the bass player, yes he's good but I stand by my original comment of "he ain't no Pino!"
