I've got a seymour duncan basslines MM pickup (can't remember if it's the ceramic one or not) in my SUB bass project and it sounds awesome, very very growly in comparison to the bart soapbars in my tobias and sounds very similar to an actual musicman pickup

+1, hercules all the way, i now have 3 hercules wall hangers, one of which has only let me down once because i installed it wrong, those hercules floor stands are great though if you have the floor space

Finger/Fretboard = Gaboon Ebony or Pau ferro
budget bassist replied to BIG.J's topic in General Discussion
Personally i think ebony boards look brilliant on the right bass, but if you're making a fretted i think pau ferro would look pretty nice on that one, it has a nice grain/colour. If you're having a fretless though, ebony all the way. -
I just don't understand why they can't just put a bit more time and effort into them, the shapes are a bit of an acquired taste and i'm sure somebody would like them, but why on earth they can't put a decent bridge on there so that you can set the intonation and put some metal ferrules into the string holes so you don't f*** the wood up is completely beyond me. And for a custom 'luthier', and i use the word very loosely, you'd think he'd take a bit more care with actually crafting the bodies, every single wishbass i've seen looks like it's been done with a chisel, sharp edges everywhere, nothing looks even and like it's been done properly, they're just an absolute shambles.

I don't think i've ever seen a bass that's uglier than a wishbass with worse hardware and craftsmanship, it looks like someone with two fingers put it together with nothing more than a chisel!

Pretty cool looking

Tuner upgrade on a Squier Bronco
budget bassist replied to neepheid's topic in Repairs and Technical
Get the schallers, quality tuners and less work for yourself EDIT: a set of those went on ebay the other day for about £3! It's a good job they wouldn't fit my tobias otherwise i'd be kicking myself! -
Have you tried adjusting the truss rod? I'm not being condescending but you didn't mention anything about it and it would be silly not to check.

*****SOLD***** Squier Vintage Modified Fretless jazz bass
budget bassist replied to Chris2112's topic in Basses For Sale
What are these like, is it worth swapping stuff out on one, changing the bridge and pickups etc ?. I'm after a jazz bass, and I want an electric fretless so I'm thinking I may combine the two things and get a fretless jazz.
You may want to change the bridge to improve the sustain as i'd imagine it wouldn't be that good in a fretless (never really tried one) but the stock pickups are pretty nice and are in general very nice basses -
...but do you not get my point? You said as much in your post (and I quote): My build is unlike anything Jon has ever built before. Jon is building your bass, not you. I understand the talent these luthiers have, I really do, but my point here is what quantifies a build diary - it's Jon building your bass, so shouldn't he be blowing his own trumpet maybe? I don't know. At the end of the day, you're paying the guy for his talent and ability to provide you with your dream bass; credit to you for putting your trust and money into someone you believe in, I salute you, but, irrespective of your dreams or desires it's really not so different than placing an order with the Warwick or Fender custom shops (albeit you're dealing on a more personal basis), or getting someone to build you a car part or a computer and taking the credit for it as your build.. I'm not trying to piss anyone off here, but there are a lot of projects creeping into this part of the forum that in my opinion should be elsewhere. P
He never took credit for anything Some people just find it interesting to see. It'a s build none the less and nobody ever said it had to be just basschat member's builds.

What those guys said, but i just like to see how a project comes along, it's interesting

you should be able to just solder the bridge grounding wire to the outer casing of one of the pots, that's what most people do
If you are gigging you should carry lots of spares; strings and fuses for starters. I always change my batteries once a year whether they need it or not.
+1, duracell all the way. I've never needed spare strings before though and i don't think i ever will in all honesty...

A 1-2-1 with Jon Shuker 5 String Jazz type Build

That's a beauty -
How much music do you like ?.
budget bassist replied to 6stringbassist's topic in General Discussion
I hate 99% of pop music these days, it's usually either hip hop (or some variation), R&B or indie, none of which i can stand. I do however like a fairly wide range of music, i like to think. I can stand some rap, i do like some drum and bass such as pendulum, a bit of prodigy etc, but i mostly like my rock, and most rock, i'll listen to punk, classic rock, grunge, progressive, new progressive (totally different) most types of metal, thrash, hardcore, groove, prog metal etc, a bit of funk rock like the chilis, all that sort of stuff, i've got all sorts in my cd collection, most of it is metal, but there's chilis, mars volta, led zep, motorhead, snow patrol (must throw that one out) I'm also one of these people that doesn't get jazz either, it's ok for like ambient background music, but i can't really listen to it. -
Damn! Argh! Damn you sir!
