Hey man, I haven't really been following the story and haven't seen any hatred but I saw your latest thread this morning and all the photos and it looks a sweet bass. I personally don't value guitars based on their age so count me out of all the more emotional arguments, but well done on your find anyway.

Which bassline inspired you to pick up the bass?
thisnameistaken replied to skej21's topic in General Discussion
My favourite song when I was a tiny nipper was House of Fun. What a bass line! Also listened to The Jam a lot when I was under 10, and Specials, and all that stuff. There's some great bass parts in there that are easy to play, if a bit difficult to memorise maybe for absolute beginners. The first bass line I taught myself was 'Stand By Me'. The second was Pink Floyd's 'Money' but I picked that because it sounded hard. There's always 'Fever'. Anyone can play Fever. -
Writing Lyrics - How Do You Do It?
thisnameistaken replied to RockfordStone's topic in General Discussion
All that sh*t you get from examining yourself and others, the world and its physical, philosophical and and emotional ecosystems, is stuff you want to put into lyrics. But write a good sloganeering chorus lyric. All the clever and interesting stuff is for the verses
+1000 I usually come up with hook lines in the shower or when I'm going to sleep, the rest of the words either come from slack time - waiting for public transport or, well, general waiting, but I've always been a real fan of words and using them to good effect so I really enjoy writing lyrics, so it never feels like work even if I have to sit down and do it. I also use dictation software on my phone quite a lot for recording ideas for songs, couplets that pop into my head, melodies etc. Then every couple of weeks I play back all the recordings and decide which ones had merit, and if I still think any are good/clever I'll fire up Protools or Reason (or both) and do some proper work on it. -
I think I'm in that London doing a showcase gig for a singer friend. I could be wrong but I think that's the date.

So long as your drummer can hack it you're all set. If your drummer tends to come in late from fills (like my last drummer) you're completely hosed. Fortunately I now have an excellent drummer. Dude plays marimba and is even studying tabla. Makes me look like a chump if I'm honest.

This came up a while back and some bod on Talkbass who apparently knows stuff says it's a flanger. Personally I think it's a phaser but I couldn't say which one.
and why not the corde Lambert Gut Twin 47' ?
Can you actually buy those now? They sound great.

Didn't Jaco use Acoustic amps? And weren't they solid state? I'm not hearing anything on there except some compression, probably from the tape it was tracked to. The key to the sound is a fretless Jazz and a very sprightly performance from a killer player.

Who's Next? Need to decide who to write my next book on...

Torn between Ray Brown and Milt Hinton. Chose Milt Hinton because he seems like the sort of guy who would have a more entertaining story. -
Finding *THE* bass - following from the 'end of GAS' topic...
thisnameistaken replied to Gust0o's topic in General Discussion
I think some people have silly expectations so they are never satisfied with what they have, some think a reasonably priced instrument can't possibly be good enough so they are always looking to spend more money for the reassurance of having spent more money, some think they have to have every sound ever recorded available to them so they buy a dozen or more basses, some just have a compulsion to buy pretty things when they see them, whether they need them or not. In my experience the peak of the bang:buck bell curve tends to happen around the £6-700 mark - it will get you a bass from a good factory with no structural or electrical issues. And you should be able to play that for the rest of your life. You probably won't experience 'true love' as a result but you'll probably never experience that anyway. -
Bilbo: FWIW I tried a mixed set of E&A spiro and D&G evah weich on my bass, they felt pretty good as a set but I felt I should've bought a spiro D not an evah. The evah G was definitely the right buy though, I find spiro Gs are a bit too sizzly for me. I would imagine a spiro C would be harsher still. So there's my advice - if you want to try them, try just replacing the E, A and D first.

I would definitely try the Super Silvers as recommended above, not as high tension as steels or synthetic-core / steel hybrids, not stupidly thick, nice old-school sound. They are over £50 but if they're the right strings it doesn't matter, you'll be playing the same set for years. If on the other hand they're the wrong strings you can sell them on here and get some money back.
You would not see ShergoldSnickers is better than thisnameistaken, tnit is sh*t on here would you? Until they both get multiple platinum ablums and massive tours. Then see how long it takes
I think with players like Janek they're more open to criticism because they position themselves as virtuosos, and that's all well and good in and of itself but y'know, some people just don't like the sounds they make - there's not much you can do about that. That Jauqo-MCMLXXXVIII bloke for example, his music sounds awful to me, maybe he's immensely talented but I can't listen to him, and he also seems like a bell end. I don't think you'll ever get a 20-string bass performance out of me, certainly not on a self-indulgent 'jazz' record, can't speak for ShergoldSnickers. -

'Cutting through' versus 'sitting in' the mix?
Could not agree with you more!
Sorry I did read your post above mine but somehow the first line just didn't go in... It's refreshing to see someone suggesting doing actual musical work instead of 'You'll never cut through with 15"s' or whatever. -
'Cutting through' versus 'sitting in' the mix?
thisnameistaken replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
That was actually more bemoaning live sound engineers for goiung for a monster kick sound at the expense of bass.
Every sound guy I've ever worked with has spent an age EQing the bass drum and then simply checked that the bass guitar signal exists and been happy with that. Although to be fair I suppose there's not a lot to do with a bass signal until everything else is firing. -
'Cutting through' versus 'sitting in' the mix?
thisnameistaken replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
It's interesting that whenever this topic comes up, it's always discussion of frequency ranges and mixing and never anything about how the songs are arranged. If everybody's playing the same note or the same rhythm then nobody is going to 'cut through' - try thinking about harmony and syncopation a bit more. Or *horror* space! -
SOLD: Antoni 3/4 double bass in York: £250

FWIW all octave pedals track much better with flatwounds. I suppose that's not much consolation to you if gigging with flatwounds is impractical, but you could at least keep a cheap bass strung with flats for recording.

Is your wrist bent at all while you're playing? Is the pain/discomfort at the point where your wrist joins your hand? On the palm side? Does it feel sort of scratchy? Does it still feel uncomfortable when you're not playing? If yesses, could be tendon problems - go see your GP and play as little as possible in the mean time.

Cutting through the mix - I believe I have found the problem
thisnameistaken replied to WalMan's topic in General Discussion
In all seriousness, bands that sound great are ones that understand the sound stage and can play to a room,
TBH I think in the bad-sounding bands it's mostly ego to blame. So-and-so wants to sound good at the expense of everything else. I think a lot of bands would sound better if they swapped instruments. Less showing off to do and more playing music.
