1. I almost always get the same (pub level gigs). I once got slightly more when the rest of a band I helped a couple of times did a birthday cheap for a mate of theirs.
2.
Early 80's-Westone Concord I bass (still got it), Peavey Century head (damn good amp, I was advised not to sell it, but I did)...
I gigged a Century amp into a huge sealed HH 4x12 cab for about a year. I don't think the amp or cab were bass specific but it made a righteous racket .
3. Korean Squier Jazz > Laney Linebacker 50 watt 12” combo. At soundcheck it was obvious the combo couldn’t be heard, so I think I borrowed a trusty Peavey TNT combo that WAS audible. Wonderful neck on that old jazz, I wish I’d known at the time that some decent pickups would have sorted out the thin sound before I regretfully sold it.
4. Should work fine, I used to do this with 45-105 gauge, including some drop C# songs.
5. I've played in a couple of mainly covers bands which only rehearsed when adding new songs, or to improve/change an arrangement (eg vocal harmonies). Both bands rehearsed really hard to get to that point, and had 4+ gigs a month which was plenty to keep tight. I think it's horses for courses. I hate rehearsing too much.
6. I cut loads of low bass. Sub bass is your enemy on stage at reasonably loud volumes.
7. Welcome, and I'm also interested in seeing the 40" scale basses.
8. Shhhhhh! Keep the prices down My main gigging bass for the last 9 years or so has been a MIllenium AC BXP. I also have an International series that I got from ebay for about £60.
9. All good here – but my main band is strictly once a month for full gigs, so not the same as many of you. We have space for 2 more gigs this year. I also do a handful of acoustic gigs and dep gigs now and again on top of that.
10.
...Flock of Seagulls...
Missing [if I had a photograph of you] is in our set ;-)
11. Unas Slayer of The Gods by Nile would probably work. Excellent piece of music but impenetrable to the uninitiated. You never know though - we did a decent version of Going Under by Evanescence in 2005. It fitted our style very well but cleared the dance floor
12.
Just wondered if famous bands still gig (on the quiet) or under the radar (as a pub band under a different name etc), or if the musicians have side projects where they can get their gig fix?
Yes they often have side projects like Me FIrst And The Gimme Gimmes, or little studio projects.
13. I thought if an item was faulty you were supposed to get a new one or your money back straight away? Bad luck by the way, it sounds like a pain in the arris.
14. * = still got Combos Laney Hardcore *TE Boxer 30 Cabs HH 4x12 guit/bass Nameless 2x12 Laney 4x10 Peavey BW 1x 15 Ashdown MAG 2x10 *K&F 1x12 [genuine vintage cab from Stockport] *Warwick 411 pro Heads *WEM ER40 Peavey Megabass Marshall 100watt solid state Ashdown MAG 300 *Hartke HA3500 Back-up/Practice heads Peavey Century Carlsboro Viper Crate Powerblock, stolen
15. Pete was excellent to deal with, and he sent us on our way with a CD of his band to listen to on the way home
16. Funnily enough my kids (9 & 13) don't get him either, and neither do their friends... and they do like pop music, so it's not just a genre choice. I'm pleased that a pop star can play other instruments, and that he recognises that as a good thing enough to want to show it.
17. I've not bought a new bass in about 9-10 years, and only replaced one backup/practice bass in that time. I don't need anything else
18.
Yup, we're using a DEP drummer tonight. Our drummer is unavailable. Guys, I have to tell you, I'm not big on deps. Or I should say deps for the bar band level. We, for whatever reason we can't attract a DEP with experience that can come in and due a night justice. Blue
Most of my dep gigs are with the same band so I'm familiar with 99% of the material and I know my backing vox fit okay.
19. I think it sounds fantastic, possibly better without the chorus. I wonder what a 36" scale 4 string fretless would sound like
20. Nothing due to other band members' unavailability (and we are strict on full gigs only once a month on average) but I'm keeping my eyes open for a dep gig.
21.
I am new to this whole game but it seems everyone loves someone who can sort the technical stuff out and fix things when needed so do that as well as playing bass and hoping not to cock up too much. First proper outing Friday so time will tell.
Go for it - I'm sure you'll do fine. Make sure you report back
22. Bassist, backing vox with occasional lead vox, setup and pack away. I tend to lead how we arrange songs, but that's not official, just how it's developed. In my acoustic trio it's the same but just backing vox and arranging songs is pretty democratic.
