Well my gig In Dunfermline Rock club 'Montys' didnt go to plan. First off, I was expecting delivery of my new purchase of an Ampeg SVT rig which didnt arrive in time so I had to use the house 'crappy combo' The Sound guy was an houre late, and found out that the PA was fecked. We ended up with stage left working but for stage right we had to turn one of the wedge monitors to face the crowd and turn up the gtrs. But, we managed. It was full too, not that it takes many to fill it but there was a good vibe and all the bands i chose to join us on the bill were fantastic. I quite enjoyed it really.

[/quote][/i] +1 I've sent a few basses and took the same steps.....luckily I work in a goods out part of a firm and have endless packaging avallable. Pack around the bass with bubble wrap or similar so it doesnt move, stick it in its case....a hardcase is better.....more wrap.....in a big cardboard box....and to top it off i used strapping to hold it all together and heatwrapped plastic sheeting all around it! My packages have been called 'bombproof' before!

It was so feckin loud last night I'm surprised i can still hear, let alone the quality working on your vids. Was one of the best ever gigs I've seen.

I went to wolverhampton to see DT and mostly i thought what i seem to say after every metal gig.......to loud, couldnt make much out! I just thought that was me showing my age! I've been to watch them since the very first shows and found In the bigger arenas the sound is better....like the ahoy Rotterdam so maybe they cater for bigger european gigs and then forget to turn it down for the smaller gigs.......although for a pro outfit like DT that sounds ridiculous! Anyway I couls hear JM fine in scarred and some of the new tracks so i was happy.

I think you can get some great deals buying second hand, And if you buy from this forum there's normally a good choice with top people selling.

I saw them last tour and they were awesome! So grabbed my ticket to see them again in Edinburgh.

I too will check it out after I leave the office.......I'm a bit partial to some mental Tech metal!

I have a rack behind where I sit at my PC, awfy handy for playing away with whatever annoying sounds happen when on the interweb. I have a 2 yr old so have hair bobbles wrapped around the top of the rack to stop little un pulling them down.......It's only a tempory plan as she's a bright wee thing and will no doubt figure it out soon....also it doesnt stop her messing with my EQ levels!

My band are part of a collective of like minded bands of progressive/metal types. It means we can bring similar bands to our gigs and not rely on some promoter putting us on with some acoustic act or an 80's cover band. Unfortunately the 2 bands before us last night were playing some weird noise (i think it's called sludge) and most folk left the room. Thankfully they filtered beck in when we started. Not a bad night at Teviot Underground Edinburgh.....and I didn't feck up once!!

It's a hidden gem this is! Apparently he only left Genesis due to stage fright!!

I go through big periods where I'm all but giving up coz I think I can't play the guitards riff as I'm crap. But if I look to where I was 2 or three years ago I've grown as a player and I've been playing bass since the late 80's!! I'll never be able to play fast though, a big problem being in a prog metal band. Overall I am pretty much not happy with my playing, but I know I'm still learning which is good.

I took my fretless to overwater to do a fairly simple fix in the electrics. At the time I didnt know i was to become a dad and I got it back after my daughter was born! must have been 9/10 months!!

Yeah I always liked them, more so when I was young. I've seen them a couple of times, but never with Jeff. Somehow over the years my tastes have changed and I don't ever put their music on at home, but If a song comes on the radio I'll turn it up. BTW who puts CD's in the loft? Or is me that still displays them??

My band practise in a school music room, the deal being that the one lefty drummer student gets to use our lefty drummers kit for lessons. All around us are basses, gtr's 3 drum kits and other assorted musical stuff. There are pictures of the students bands all over the walls and pictures of famous folks the kids look up to. Thats pretty healthy I'd say. I spent my youth going round the small music shops that were full of used guitars, I could never have afforded £500+ for a bass back then and I doubt kids can now. Bass was never cool, but because there were so many guitarists it got me into the better bands. There are loads of great bass players, it takes time for the kids to break away from the 'popular' music to find their own style like Funk/metal/prog or whatever.

Ooooofft........how dare they play their instruments fast!! I saw DT in the cathouse in Glasgow many many years ago and have followed them since. It was almost like the punk scene in the way that all prog and metal changed at the end of the 80's. DT are influenced by Yes and Rush but unlike other prog acts they wanted to play prog metal. Pretty much unless you like it hard and heavy it's unlikely you will like DT, the same applies to Mettalica fans and Yes. Me, I love Yes,Tull,Genesis, DT etc I love the fast tech stuff too...it doesnt need to be warm and it IS musical it's maybe not to your liking but still musical. There are nice warm Ballads you just need to find them. I think the new CD is one of the best, the production is ace, i can hear Johns bass clearley for a change and some of it sounds like Geddy, so double ace!! I also think they are better off without Portnoy, It's not as heavy now and when I go see them I get to hear more DT stuff and not an hours worth of some favorite classic album of Portnoy he's pushed the band into covering!

Quiet Thunder? Good band name! The lack of answers might be because the subject is a little confusing. Try posting this in Repairs and Technical, you might get the right sort of viewers who can answer.

Former Cynic bassist Sean Malone is pretty different, ranging from Fusion metal or plain weird. Also there was a thread a while ago about fretless in rock music, One of my favourite albums is from a band called Ark bassist Randy Covan plays a lot of it on Fretless and its great!
