1. I've been wanting a jazz V recently too. In fact i'm currently considering the metallic green one on the forum. Although, my favourites at the moment are the Victor Bailey and Marcus Miller fivers, so much GAS.
2. Finished at last . It looks absolutely stunning I have to say. How does it sound?
3. This has to be one of my favourite build diaries, not just the bass (even though it is looking gorgeous), but the story behind it. Can't wait to see it finshed.
4. Now gone, swapped for this.
5. I wood not be seen dead with it. Might be good for some roots music, but personally i'd leaves it.
6. I remember there was a test on EB forums where they recorded two sound samples of the same bass with different necks (both necks were EBMM sterling necks though), one maple fingerboard the other rosewood. People guessed which was which and as I remember, when the answer was announced, most people got it right (including me). The difference was very subtle but definately there. I think it's stupid to say woods have no impact on tone as that's clearly not true, but I think wood differences can be very subtle or very apparent. After all a basses sound is just the sum of all the materials used and how they're put together. Different materials have different resonant qualities - fact.
7. I sometimes have an odd urge to order a warmoth jazz bass with Mahogany body, Koa neck and Pau Ferro fingerboard and stick fender electronics in it. Not sure why though.
8. Try right clicking on one of the listings pictures. Go on, I dares ya.
9. Nice work. And the grain in that wood is lovely, you should keep it a natural finish. Can't help but feel the original yellowish paint job is a bit much.
10.
I played one of these at the weekend and it felt fantastic. I'd be very interested but for the fact I can only play 5 stringers.
Yeah, it's a shame the Marcus Miller 5 stringers are so expensive. They should really do a jap fiver as well as the american one.
11. Just some info on how the gig went. Sound guy was brilliant and such a nice guy to work with. The performance itself went well and it was a lot of fun. However at the end the *!@?*%!! of an owner refused to pay us a penny. Considering we drove two hours there and back and played a gig which made him money on ticket sales and drinks bought (there was about 40 people there paying £5 each plus drinks sold at a very busy bar) I think it's just plain nasty. I'd recommend people keep away if they're offered any gigs there to avoid this absolute larcenist crook. I've tried to restrain my language here as it is a public forum but I really am outragedand hope noone else here has the same problem.
12. This band (To The Dogs) isn't my main band as I only joined a few months ago, but my other band is too lazy so this is the only one I get many gigs with. It's not as funky as i'd like it to be but our singer Joe is a great songwriter and it's still fun to play. Just letting you guys know if anyone wants to drop in for a bit and support a fellow basschatter. I'll be using my stingray as i've only just got new strings for my jazz today and they might sound a bit bright. Other bands playing are 'Alex Body' and 'The International Christian Playboys'. Haven't heard either of them but it should be a bit of fun anyway. Hopefully see some of you there but if not no worries, Mat
13.
I found the 2EQers warmer, fatter and more 'natural' sounding. Certainly easier to get a sound I liked anyway.
True. Well as far as I can see.
14. Currently on ebay. Sales, trades or part EXs still all welcome.
15. Still here. Sale with buyer picking up preferred.
16. Shame your gonna pull the sale. I would love to give this a shot if I had the cash but a bass i've had up for a while doesn't seem to be selling. If I do manage to sell it i'll give you a call.
17.
Yeah, fair enough. Look, I have no specific information on this bass, although my gut feeling is that it's completely bogus. However, there's long been stories about a cottage industry in Asia that makes vintage replicas and attempts to get them into circulation on the vintage market. Remember, as bassplayers, we see the occasional instrument getting into the 10K region, but if you're talking guitars, it's quite easy to find vintage instruments that are worth 50K, 100K and more. With those sorts of values floating around, there are going to be people tempted to make something that can be passed off for a vintage instrument. Like anything, there will be different levels of perfection provided - some will create instruments that even the experts have trouble deciding upon, others will put up half-*ssed efforts that can fool enough people on Ebay to get a result, and then there are others that are painfully obvious. I'd put the bass in question in that middle bracket - it's got enough "right" about it to fool people who haven't done enough homework. While people may scream and shout about this kind of fradulent behaviour, it's no different to what's gone on in antique markets for years and years. Take antique furniture, for example, there's so many forgeries around it's not funny, and the reason there are is because there's a market for it. It's just another example of caveat emptor.
It makes you think though. If it's so realistic a fake that an expert believes it's genuine, then to you it is genuine, therefore there being no real problem (well... theoretically). Sort of reminds me of an episode of Hustle I saw a while back.
18. Well with 30 bids it's fooled someone.
19. I think, as of soon, my '89 stingray may have to go up for sale. This is way too gorgeous (and local) to let pass. Where in suffolk are you? I'd be very tempted to come try it out before actually deciding to part with my beloved stingray.
20. This isn't mine. Just found it on the warmoth site.
21. I played a white one of these a while back and despite being fretless it didn't sound fretless (?) and the fret lines were unusually thick. It didn't give that lovely 'mwwahh' sound I get from my fretless status. But I guess at £65 it would just be a muck about bass anyway.
22. How about frets?
23. Once again I have to say that it stunning. Any idea roughly what it would cost to get an identical 4 or 5 string built without the midi and piezo stuff? I'm really starting to want a shuker myself and would probably sell up most of my stuff for quality over quantity.
24. At that price this shouldn't be around long. I'd have it myself if I had a little more cash.
