1. Pah! Nowadays it’s all gone health and safety mad. Back in the good old days we had proper trip hazards all over the stage. Here’s me just about to fall over in 1985:
2. @Bass Pedal Geek: one thing your review doesn't say anything about is how quiet the Super Symmetry is. I don't have very extensive experience with compressor pedals, but the SS is by far the quietest I have ever tried - in fact it seems uncannily hiss-free, to my ears at least. Obviously it starts to hiss a bit if you really crank it, but even then it is quieter than some pedals are at even low to moderate settings. Which is another reason to love it, I think!
3. Thanks, Gigrig users, for your recommendations - I recently upsized my pedalboard and needed a new PSU to cope with the new additions. Was going to get a Voodoo Labs Mondo, but thought I would check out this Gigrig thing of which you spoke (and of which I had never heard previously) ... and WOW! Exactly what I need - and light as a feather, too! Bought a base pack 4, and it ticks all the boxes brilliantly. One happy convert, here!
4. I hear what you say, but the Flashback is VERY hard to beat ...
5.
I got a review unit from DG a week ago or so. If you're want to hear how it sounds, I have uploadet the full review along with a bundh of audio clips here: http://bass-pedals.com/darkglass-super-symmetry-review/index.html
Great review - you've said it all, really! I've been playing with mine for a week now, and can confirm that it is a joy to use. And I would underline what you say about transparency - it is REALLY transparent. Which may not be what everyone wants from a compressor, but it is absolutely what I want, so I am well chuffed with it. And those blue LEDs ...
6. Ah, Roland, you are too kind, sir! Although on reflection the bald head is probably a better look than the mullet!
7. Another 'the years haven't been kind ...' photo essay: 1985: 2015:
8. Très cool! Like the arty B&W - very nouvelle vague, especially with the shades - but it's pity we can't see what shade of purple your shoes are! I'm guessing blackcurrant Chewits, maybe?
9.
Arrived not long ago. Only had 10 minutes with it, I need to get it on the board and spend some more time with it but initial thoughts are its killer, the HPF is every bit as good as I hoped, and surprisingly perhaps I think I do prefer it to my old full size Cali (non transformer version, I suspect this isn't quite up to the transformer version standard). It really has a ton of depth, open up the HPF and its just a bottomless pit of Cali loveliness. The controls are very intuitive, wasn't sure about the combined Attack/Release control but having just used it its really nice and my main concern was the metering but the single light is pretty cool and I'm actually liking its making me use my ears more rather than just looking at a meter for 8 to 12 DB reduction which is my default. It feels like they have squeezed a lot in this little thing, its reassuringly heavy and is built like a tank. Its bloody good, if I had just spent that 10 minutes in a shop trying it I would have walked out £300 lighter. Edit - Had some more time with it now and yeah it is very very good indeed, for what I want out of a compressor pedal its as good as it gets, was going to give the Darkglass a try as well but not now I'm very happy with this. Couple of negatives would be there is a brief cut in sound when the pedal is engaged, but most will have this always on so not an issue I guess and the huge chunky screws holding the bass plate on, that means a single layer of Velcro on the bottom doesn't make contact with the pedalboard, so i had to stick a few layers of thick Gaffa tape on the bottom then put the Velcro on so it clears the screws, seems an odd flaw for a pedal that's selling point is its more pedal board friendly than the full size units. But these are minor things, the compressor its self is a work of art really.
EXCELLENT review - v helpful - many thanks!
10. White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl.
11. Bought Ian's Dunlop volume pedal today - item exactly as described, and a hassle free sale. It was nice to meet him in person, too - really nice guy. Buy, sell or trade with 100% confidence, folks! Thanks, Ian, and see you at the Steve Lawson gig in October!
12. True, this is all just idle internet-based speculation so far - we really need to get some proper A/B-ing done!
13. Yes, that's exactly why I've decided not to invest in the Cali, awesome though it will undoubtedly be. From what I have gathered on the Interwebs, it imparts even more of a vintage, tubey kind of flavour than the big one does - some are describing it as having an 'SVT vibe'. All well and good, but I think that my current rig (Aguilar TH500 into 2 SL112s) is doing enough of that kind of thing already, so I hope you're right about the Darkglass being more transparent - that's exactly what I want!
14.
I thought the DG price was very good to be honest, considering the competition of boutique compressors are all more expensive, Diamond, Empress, Origin e.t.c.
Yes, this occurred to me, too. Origin's website prices the new mini Cali76 at £279, whereas Bass Direct are asking £199 for the Super Symmetry. The smaller size of the Cali really appeals, but from what I have gathered about the two pedals I think the Darkglass is more what I'm after.

16. All very interesting! Thanks for the info. I really like your current set-up - sometimes (in fact very often), less is more. I like working with restrictions - having too much choice can really get in the way of creativity. When I first started playing bass I only had one effects pedal for ages - a Boss BF-2 flanger. I go to know it REALLY well, and got to the point where I could get an incredible range of sounds out of it.
17. Lovely! I really like the melancholy feel of this piece, and the way it builds up - those high tones near the end really tested my speakers! Great work- I'll definitely be listening to this again while working on the computer later this evening. Sounds like there is some kind of looped and processed field recording with human voices low in the mix - is that right? And what is the Kaoss Pad doing in this track? I've often wondered about experimenting with one of these but haven't quite got my head around exactly what they do or how I might use one.
18. Wow! Congratulations, Fretmeister! Fantastic bass. Are you going to give it the full Larry Graham at some point, or leave the hardware as it is? (FWIW I'd do the latter.)
