1. FANTASTIC basses, these. I bought a VM5 a few months ago and just cannot put it down - so much fun to play! This one shouldn't be here long, but GLWTS anyway.
2.
I'd agree that a DJ who 'just' plays records isn't a musician. However... creatively mixing two records together - resulting in a new piece of music - does qualify as musicianship IMO. And therein lies the diversity of what it means to be a 'DJ'... Colin who plays popular hits of the 80s at wedding receptions, fading one song in as another one ends, is not musician. He's not 'creating' music, he's broadcasting it. Jane who plays a residency at the local nightclub, blending music 'on the fly' to create her own remixes, is a musician. She's creating new material live on stage - albeit music created using component parts made by others (akin to the 'artists collage' metaphor above). At least that's how I draw the line with DJs
This. Exactly. Jane is also quite likely to slip one or two of her own tracks (put together in her home studio) into the mix.
3. Bert just bought my TC Electronic Flashback X4 delay pedal. A great guy to trade with - friendly, efficient and prompt payment. Top recommendation from me! Cheers, Bert! Hope you enjoy the pedal.
4. Another totally satisfied trader here. You can expect great communications and super-prompt payment from Shemeck. All the best, mate - hope you enjoy the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe!
5.
... I play a Fender Precision Deluxe Okoume ... it would be nice to have a second bass which can offer something really different.
In that case I would say go for an EBMM or a Sub. Lovely basses though they undoubtedly are, I think you may find that the Pre-EB Ray and the EB Classic are not different enough from your Precision Deluxe to be worth buying - not if you really do want something that sounds really different. Soundwise, the Pre-EB is sort of half-way between a Precision and an EBMM. Essentially, what EB did when they bought MusicMan was to 'hotrod' the Ray, by which I mean they took what was different about the Stingray sound and maxed it out. This makes it more of a marmite 'love it or hate it' bass than the Pre-EB, admittedly, but in my view it is a more exciting bass to play - if you like really aggressive basses, that is! The other thing to bear in mind is that Pre-EB build quality was variable, to say the least, whereas EBMM build quality is uniformly stunning - IMO they are the best made mass production basses in the world, by a country mile. Which means you can buy one sight unseen with much more confidence than is the case with Pre-EBs - you really need to check them out in person if you are going to buy one, as there are some real dogs out there. Here is a really helpful video comparing pre and post EB basses; the difference between the two sounds is very clear! There is no point in saying that one is 'better' than the other - they are just very different beasts! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyKzf6Nv0Po As for the USA vs SUB question, I don't have any knowledge about SUBs at all but I would say that USA EBMMs sell here on Basschat for £650 - 700 these days, which is a steal.
6. If this were a 5-string I'd be all over it! Fantastic basses, these. GLWTS!
7. Thanks, TJ! Yes, I know I'm going to miss it, but needs must!
8.
Discipline by King Crimson
+ another 1 (more cheating, since I've already voted for Yessongs!) Saw KC at Hammersmith Palais when Discipline came out. One of the best gigs I've ever been to in my life.
9. For sale or trade, my TC Electronics Flashback X4 delay + looper pedal Delay heaven, with an excellent looper built into it as well. Sounds pristine, built like a tank, and incredibly easy and intuitive to use. I love this beastie but need to downsize my pedalboard, so am looking to swap this one for a standard-size 4-knob Flashback. It’s been gigged, but is still in excellent condition and perfect working order; absolutely no issues. I’m the original owner. These go for about £150 new, so at £70 you’re getting a bit of a bargain even without the power supply (I seem to have lost that, but never used it anyway). I don’t have the original box for it any more either, but will send it in a suitably sized box of some kind, and it will be very securely padded. £70 posted to your door. Happy to knock £5 off the asking price if you collect in person from Gramme Towers in South Birmingham. Trade options: TC Flashback (the standard size four knob one) TC Vortex Flanger Darkglass Duality For a link to my feedback thread, see below. Thanks for looking!
10. For sale or trade, my MXR Bass Octave Deluxe pedal £60 posted to your door. Happy to knock £5 off the asking price if you collect in person from Gramme Towers in South Birmingham. Lots of love for these here on Basschat and elsewhere on the Net, and for good reason. Fantastic sounding octaver - tracks great, and offers a ton of tonal options. The ‘Growl’ and ‘Girth’ knobs are essentially two completely different voicings - the former is similar to the Boss OC-2, and the latter is smoother and deeper sounding. Both can be mixed together and with the dry signal, which has its own dedicated control knob as well. The little toggle switch at top left boosts the mid frequencies, and sounds so good that I tend to leave it on all the time. Only selling because I bought a POG-2 and there isn’t room for that and the MXR on my pedalboard. I had planned to keep both so that I have both analog and digital octave flavours (they are very different sounds), but it turns out that this is a luxury I can’t afford at the moment, so sadly this cool blue sparkly fella has to go. It’s been gigged, but is still in excellent condition and perfect working order; absolutely no issues. I’m the original owner. GAK sell these new for £122.99, so at £60 you’re getting a bargain here. I’ve long since chucked out the original box for it, but will send it in a suitably sized box of some kind, and it will be very securely padded. Trade options: TC Flashback (the standard size four knob one) TC Vortex Flanger Darkglass Duality For a link to my feedback thread, see below. Thanks for looking!
11.
Heh, are you mentals? We are bass players.
Quote me out of context, why don't you? FFS.
12. Voodoo Labs for me - rock solid, ultra low noise, top quality all round. Not the cheapest, but worth every penny.
13. More heresy: maybe the best prog rock album has yet to be written? If so, then my money's on these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUSIJwGj5y4
14. Maybe this is cheating, but I'll say 'Yessongs'. As I'm a bit of a heavy rock yobbo, I actually prefer the more kick-ass live versions of CTTE, Siberian Khatru etc to the studio originals. Heresy, I know!
15. If I genuinely believed that any bass will do, and that it is all down to the player, then I would sell everything, buy a Squier Classic Vibe P (which are cracking basses, btw) and put the rest towards a new car or a nice holiday.
16. Come to think of it, why have more than one bass at all? What a waste of money!
17. If any bass will do, why bother buying an expensive one?
18.
Poor bass players... 'Anything will do.' Can you imagine guitarists having the same discussion?
Nailed it.
