Exciting New Years Eve Gigs, What's Happening With Everyone?
uk_lefty replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
Local to me, I'm just down the road. Unfortunately won't be able to get out due to having small children and not looking for a babysitter on NYE but let me know the name of your band etc and I'll keep an eye out for you! -
Sorry to be political but I'd vote for Scotland to be independent as long as bagpipes are pu ishable by death in the rest of the UK. And non Scottish people wearing kilts at weddings.

Available in pizza express.

Looks great. I like Bartolinis in a jazz, worked well in my MIM, but it depends what tone you want. It's a good looking bass with decent pickups. If only someone's mum hadn't written his name on it before he took it to school

I had a similar one. Mine was early 90's, very heavy and quite beaten up by a previous owner. But it arrived with lightweight tuners and a Badass II bridge. It was a great gigging bass that went through quite a lot of upgrades but always felt comfortable to play. Kinda regretting letting it go. The early 90s MIM stuff has a bad reputation but for what it was I loved it. Must just mean the current MIM stuff is amazing!

Can't quote all but... They never sounded right with josh to me at least. BSSM and Californication are my favourite chilli's albums by miles. John has a huge part in that, I like his playing whether technical or not. I've read interviews that say he was so heavily involved in the songwriting and arranging for Californication it put Fleas nose out and he nearly walked. Saw the Chiilis with josh in 2012 at Knebworth. Awful gig. Even the t shirt I bought wasn't printed straight. I'd have happily seen them bring Dave Navarro back, I really enjoy his playing style. I could have lied, what a song!! Very personal to me... When I was 15 I somehow got together with this beautiful, amazing girl way out of my league (think gwen stefani in the don't speak video). However she was 17 and I had lied to her and told her I was 17 as well... Not quite the story of the song but I was listening to the album a lot at the time and it always reminds me of that summer!

This time of year favours the buyer

So I've read most of this thread... I'd be tempted to do the gig. Naked. And play only the root note for each song. By that I mean if the song is in E, only play the note of E. Timing is optional. Or you could play and shout at the drummer "KEEP TIME YOU STUPID C***!!!" every time he speeds up or slows down. In all seriousness I wouldn't do the gig if I were you. If the drummer speeds up and slows down unless the rest of the band is ducks-bum-tight enough to cover for his deficiencies then it really shows and makes everyone look rubbish. If he's that much of an derrière too chances are everyone else on the scene knows. So your cv will not be at all blemished by not doing a gig after you've been fired and reasonable musos will probably say they can't believe you held out so long without walking away. Or you could do the gig naked, smash a bass before the end of the first half, shout at the drummer, set fire to the singers hair and flounce out the door. Your choice.

Ever since my audition for my current band I've always played it double time using two fingers. Fast and furious is the only way I want to play this song. I dont think I'd get on with your band leader.

Congrats! From the headings it seems like useful info for players of all levels, and way more useful than gear reviews. Much needed info for bassists everywhere, wish you every success with it!

I can only speak of the lefties but I've seen a few of these come up over the years, the seller seems to grind them out every few months. I've never read anything misleading in the ads. If they were a few hundred quid I'd maybe take a punt but with no idea on the sound, feel or long term viability of the bass I can't do it at those prices, I'd rather go to Limelight and have some more guarantee to the work. Also I like my relics to look used but not like they've been washed up on the rocks at Ravenscar beach. Fair play, he makes things you can't buy (for lefties anyway), starts the auctions low, describes accurately as far as I can tell, and people buy them at a decent price.

Oh my. It looks nice!! No idea on market price for these, but I love the look.

Can someone please buy the heavily discounted D'Angelico lefty acoustic bass from Guitarguitar so that I don't? Thank you.

The three bass stand is ok BUT can get unbalanced when you take one out. I've got a stagg one and would only use it at home. They're more designed for guitars than basses and the way they handle weight shows this clearly, I've stopped taking mine for gigs because in dim lighting and a hurry to change between songs bad things can happen easily and Japanese P basses can end up face down in a pool of cider if not secured properly. I would personally prefer one like in the top picture, but guess there's pros and cons to every design.

"I really wanted to play your guitar" (tanked up punters)
uk_lefty replied to a topic in General Discussion
If they're not tanked up I do indulge some people. Like the bar staff where the girl is explaining to the others what a Fretless is because her dad plays, so I handed the bass over the bar for them to look at, that really shocked them in to behaving and not trying to make innuendo out of "smooth tones" etc. But if they're hammered and "my mate is better than you" they get my Northern accent. You won't like when I speak Northern. -
+1 he's worked wonders on some of the tat I've bought off ebay over the years... And I've trusted him to work on nice basses too!

I find it fascinating and Nita is a great example of this. Is she just social media'ing what she does in her spare time for the good of her fans or creating second income streams that a touring musician needs? Let's face it Alice will retire soon, she still needs to eat and pay rent long after so creating awareness of her drives up demand for her services. Everywhere she tours with Alice Cooper she's giving guitar master classes in guitar shops and promoting her solo material, she's definitely putting the hours in but also keeping her name out there. I respect it, seems very clever, and of course it's all backed up by supreme talent, fair play to her, seems like the template for the working muso in the social media age.

I didn't think I was ready the first time... but then I found I could do better than I had thought, and I improved MUCH MUCH MUCH faster once I was in a band. Do it! This... And this... Then go for it!!! So what if you fluff a few bits? If people want it exact they can listen to the record, if they want live music they get it with all its raucous imperfections. Everyone started somewhere! You might play with some people who are a bit sniffy and don't have the patience if you can't keep up, fine. But you may find the band that want someone who just keeps it simple, turns up on time, pays their share of rehearsal fees and isn't a bumhole to be around. Then you'll improve from enthusiasm, commitment to the band, and to enhance your own enjoyment.

Haha I have three already... It is a bit greedy when the justification for buying the Stingray was "I'll never need another...."

I do like the Sims pickups idea. It's a lot of saving though!

Current band: Was trying to do a new band with some guys who were not so reliable and it fell apart so I decided to join an established band. I connected with some guys in a covers band who'd lost their bassist and fired their rhythm guitarist. They had a new rhythm guitarist who'd done one gig with them. I went to audition. There was a lad before me who was by all accounts a good player but had a cold, wet handshake and needed a lift off his dad, he also expected better money and more gigs. I'd researched the band on their soundcloud and Facebook and turned up well prepared. I'd already got the job on the strength of having a proper handshake but I knew loads more of their set than they had originally asked for mainly due to experience in previous bands and we just jammed through loads of their list. Luckily the songs I thought were bobbins so hadn't learned they didn't like anyway because they were the unpopular choices of the departed members. I've been in the band three and a half years now. It's my second longest "permanent job". The lads are all good mates and while we had a slow year last year I can't see it folding, though I am itching to do a side project for something different and get more gigs in.

Never thought of it like that! I like your thinking.

Yeah I had two jazzes, an MIM with a load of upgrades and a 5 string Sire. I traded the Fender in against a new Stingray then later felt guilty about having too many basses and sold the Sire. I'd just bought the Stingray which will lose a load of its value if I sell it too soon and I have a Fretless that is very special to me and I won't sell it ever. So the jazzes went. The P is great for what a P does. I just feel a bit more at home with a Jazz. The Stingray is great for playing live, so is the P, but if I were recording and playing more at home for my own enjoyment it would be jazz bass as a preference every time.

I see your point but I consider it to be like a museum. A lot of people obviously do enjoy it, hence the successful global business. I know some people think having a hard rock cafe t shirt or whatever is a bit naff but if I'm near one while on holiday I always have to go in and have a quick look at the memorabilia and the shop even if a lot of the merch is very expensive for what it is.

Fender sent me a marketing email with a link to their own site but it's 50% off starts and Teles, no basses directly from them. Also 15% off offset body guitars and basses by the look of it. Fender hates left handers so I only give them a quick glance!
