1. I'd love to have a Rob Allen mouse 30. The headstock does look a bit like a foot though.
2. For a brand I've never heard of, they seem to have a lot of endorsees on their website (no one I've heard of though). The cynic in me wonders how many sets they actually sell at the full price - ie iss this an ego massaging trick to get you to buy their strings? Do they make their own strings or are they generic far eastern made strings you can get in other packaging for the same as the endorsee cost or less? Like some listed for £6 delivered from ebay. They have a sign up form for string endorsees on their website: http://www.dovetailretail.co.uk/registration.php - There are 84 bands listed currently - I wonder if they ever reject anyone who applies?
3. hacked up japcrap I'd guess. It hasn't just been hit with the ugly stick - I think it IS the ugly stick
4. I've heard reports that Labella Flats don't like going string-thru - the almost right-angle bend at the saddle can split the windings open. I've not had this issue - I have both LaBella & TI flats on string-thru basses with no problems. As you have a choice it may be safer to topload, but you may prefer the slightly tighter feel of thru stringing. You may be used to cutting down the strings before you put them on. Martin Petersen once told me that it is better not to cut your strings - it certainly isn't necessary on a fender-type long scale bass with TI flats. Get as many winds on the tuner as you can and stack it as neatly as possible with the string exiting right at the bottom, ie as near to the wood as possible. I probably haven't explained this very well, but I can probably post a pic later. I owned my first precision for 20 years before plucking up courage to touch the truss rod - it was a daunting task as first, but it should become second nature once you've done it a few times.
5.
By adding extra tracks and cutting up the stereo master, moving stuff around.......
Aha! I hope you did a more successful job than Zappa's "we're only in it for the money" which I bought when it came out on CD in the mid 80's & some very 80s-sounding drums & bass had been added which totally ruined the whole album
6. I'm used to mastering a stereo mix, but how can you remix if you only have the (I assume stereo) CD master? Not being funny, just curious.
7. I like the text on the web site
Most bassists like the sure and true notes of fretted basses, while others prefer the fluid and expressive tone of the fretless.
...but which one is better?...
8. The sunburst one is the twin of my MIJ '62 RI mine also has an N0 serial. Mine's very light as well and I'm sure the body is alder. Sounds great with the stock pickup as well. Good luck with the sale
9. I wrote my name on my bass once - does that count?
10.
What other options are there around the £1200-1300 mark with similar spec?
I built a fretless precison from a sunburst alder Brandoni body which seems to be identical in every way to my 1990 MIJ '62 reissue Fender P. It has a beautiful quartersawn maple neck also from Brandoni with thick ebony unlined board (with a cheeky 70's style 'P' logo), Kent Armstrong Pickup, hipshot late-60s style lollypop tuners and some fender bits & bobs. It plays really well and sounds marvelous - apart from my dodgy intonation. I think it cost around £450 all-in to build, so maybe that could be an option? It wouldn't be too much hassle to get the body routed for a jazz pickup professionally and of course the pickups could be wired any way you like.
11. Glad you're OK Si - that could have been nasty if you'd fallen in the wrong direction.
12.
I've been looking for a hard case for my Ashbory - I'm not a great one for soft bags, and also Fender seem to have taken the measurements for the gig bag from the old Guild bags, which didn't have to cater for tuners that stick out horizontally and increase the instrument length. A violin case looked as if it might do the job but was just too short. Other cases were too small, too big or hideously expensive. I finally found the right one - a shotgun case, from Treeline Products: Shotgun case It's £54 on their site but it was rather less expensive than that through their ebay shop - £47 delivered.
Cool - it says it can accommodate two shotguns, does it look like it could comfortably fit two Ashborys? That would be really useful for me if it did. I know what you mean about the standard softcase - when my blue one was delivered the E tuner was destroyed - the ebay seller did a really bad packaging job. - Kelly at largesound.com sorted me out a replacement for £4 delivered from the other side of the pond though.
13.
Are you 100% satisfied with your best bass?
My favourite bass is my CIJ Mustang I'm 100% happy with how it plays & sounds, but it would be 100% perfect in looks if it was exactly the same but Daphne blue and with 'lollypop' tuners (I might put on some lollypop hipshot ultralites). At the moment I'm 100% happy with my tanglewood 'rosewood reserve' acoustic bass though, but give me time to get more used to it & I'll probably find something to niggle about.
14.
As an example as a driver delivering carparts I seen the same escort cossie in around 5 different showrooms across the Provence.
That would explain the ocassionally noticed rotating stock in the 5 Denmark Street musicground-owned shops
15. I have a Violetburst Daisyrock elite. Beautiful bass - 32" scale, two soapbars, active electronics. Massive punchy sound. Not sure I'm ready to part with it though. My daughter also has one just like it & also a 1971 fender musicmaster bass in lilac. She sold her 'princess purple' heartbreaker bass. My peavey fiver is a nice deep purple over quited maple veneer top - you should be able to pick one up for £200 - £250
16. Is the song called soggy biscuit?
17.
would recommend the Behringer BLE 100, or possibly the GLX Bass Limiter which is in a more robust enclosure...
I'm a big fan of the BLE100 - in fact they're so cheap I managed to pick up a second one on ebay for about £6 to keep as a spare, however my original one is showing no signs of falling apart. It enables me to play with a lighter touch while staying audible. I have owned and tried many compressors, but never really been happy with them as I didn't like the squashed sound I'd typically get out of them.
18.
Music Ground and Regent Guitars are, of course, the same shop.
As are Bass Cellar, Hanks Acoustics and Rockers - Staff and stock seem to often rotate around all of these shops.
19. I have a pair of the jazz lipstick ones in my jazz, an alnico precision one in my fretless P - great pickups. I also have a couple of 70s musicmasters with Kent Armstrong dual blade humbucker strat pickups which sound much better than the stock pickups.
20.
As far as I know, Andysguitarnet is run by what used to be Andys in Denmark St
According to the website it is indeed the same company. I wouldn't touch 'em with a sh1tty stick.
21. The last 30 secs of this track give an indication of how my Dean Pace sounded with TI Jazz flats and Behringer ADI-21
22.
In fact, the Pace has a shorter scale than most fretless basses.
Most fretless basses are longer than 35" scale? i did not know that.
23. I'd be all over this, but I already have one just like it - down to the ritter bag & strap button relocation, although mine has TI flats & a hipshot D-tuner. A great looking, sounding & playing bass. Only 500 were made in this colour you know!
