No love for a pink bass?
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
JLP's one was full of win.
I'll probably start missing it now you've posted the pic I still have one of these though: -
I have ashtrays on my precisions & jazz, & also put one on my daisy rock. I use 'em as a hand rest using a style shamelessly ripped off from a certain Mr J Jamerson. Unfortunately I'm only able to emulate the style of positioning my hand - not the note-choices & rhythms employed by him. Also I don't go as far as doing the claw thing.

My new Tanglewood Rosewood Reserve TRB CE Electro Acoustic Bass delivered today. Its ex demo so I got it at a little over half price on ebay. It was immaculate except for the strings which were rough feeling & had the typical acoustic bass scratchy sound. I had also ordered a set of TI AB344 which arrived last week, so I put them on. Blummin 'eck the bridge pins are a bit of a struggle, but I discovered the knack and with the TIs on it sounds wonderfully rich and smooth. Then I plugged it in - wow very uprightly. Its much easier to play with the TIs. I'm chuffed with it - it should be loud enough for acoustic rehearsals. The missus isn't too happy about me getting another bass, but I've talked her round & she's going to pay for it as my xmas pressie.

Its the shop you have to get arsey with, not the manufacturer if you want to take it further. Personally I wouldn't bother though.

What a nutter. Then again nutters are probably the target market.

Meet Flea this pm in London, Dec17th
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
I was about to deplore this unseemly hostility towards such an esteemed visitor to our little island during the season of goodwill to all men. For shame. Then I noticed you only get to meet him if you buy one of his rather expensive promotional hats. So you're paying him £15 to advertise his product. For that sort of money I'd expect a soapy ***-**** from his Missus. I therefore invite the tight-fisted, gap-toothed, faux-psychotic, fanboy-exploiting fret-masher to pack his cash-filled Hermes bags and shag off home to his adoring acolytes, thus avoiding the likelihood of having a tightly-rolled item of headwear rammed up his Sheriff's badge.
I can't add anything to that, so I'll just say +1. Apart from the bit about his missus as I don't know whether she's a munter or not. -
Hi MM, thanks for the reply, just to clarify slightly, when I phoned my local music shop to ask for prices I was told I should use standard size strings, I knew short scale strings existed, hence my confusion. Regards Jim
Don't listen to them, you spoke to someone who makes things up if they don't know the answer. Flatwounds (Particularly the E string) [s]will[/s] are likely to snap at the tuner if you put 34" scale ones on. You are more likely to get away with it using roundwounds though. The shortest TI Flats are 32". They work on a mustang because of the string-thru bridge, but as the bronco is toploading, TI JF 324s are too short. LaBella short scale deep talkin flats should fit, but phone stringbusters (or whoever you buy from) first & check the length of the G - I've had some that weren't long enough & had to use a G from a long scale set. Rotosound short scale jazz bass flats are likely to be the perfect length as long as you get a good set - however I haven't bought any rotos for years after getting consistently bad sets last time I wasted my money on them.
If they make an amp called the Utter C**t I'm buying it!
I wouldn't. I've already been in too many bands that had at least one.
You are, of course, the one who posted about it though! Si
Yes, but only because I think its big & clever
I don't find the name offensive but it is a little unnecessary. It's like they are trying to be really rock n roll because they swear. I'd just be a bit embarassed to play one. Not that I feel really strongly about it but just my two cents
Ashdown probably think that their target market would be impressed by that kind of thing

ebay advice please: second chance offer
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
Well I got a reply back - it turns out the explanation is that they have a number of these new & boxed to sell & the winning bidder didn't back out. I could wait a few days & hope the one currently listed fetches a lower price, but I'm happy with the £220 I bid (inc postage) so I've hit the button & paid so it will be on its way to me very soon. It'll be nice if it does have the lovely rosewood smell that my 80's washburn guitar has, but as long as it plays well and is loud enough for acoustic rehearsals I'll be chuffed with it. OK what acoustic strings are good? I'm guessing my favourite TI 344s flats won't be very loud - are the TI acoustic rounds worth a go? -
The new ashdown mini tube amp looks good, but after calling it the little bastard, where is there left to go if they want to do a more extreme version? Will they eventually have a range of amps called the 'kick in the b*lls', 'motherf**ker' & the 'utter c**t'? My danelectro fits into the same gigbag I use for my tele thinline guitar, but I expect that's unusual. for my other 30" & 32" basses I use the same gigbags I use with my 34" basses. The extra bit at the end doesn't make any difference to anything apart from there being room to pack a doughnut and a sausage roll if you're likely to get peckish at the rehearsal or gig.

I put in a bid for 202.50 in the vinegar strokes of this auction and was beaten by a fiver: http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...em=360215899745 75 minutes after it ended and I had resigned myself to a lifetime of not owning a solid stika topped rosewood ABG, I receive a second chance offer to buy it at the amount of my bid. I love the way rosewood acoustics smell and it should be louder than most ABGs due to the solid sitka top and big fat body, so I'm happy paying the amount of my maximum bid, but I'm in uncharted territory as I've never had any dealings with 2nd chance offers so I can't tell whether anything about this looks dodgy. It looks like the seller has a shop & there is a possibility that he has more than one of these basses & of course his feedback looks good. what do you think - does it look OK?

Danelectro Longhorn shortscale
I can tell you that the point knobs are a right pain, they are in the way of each other, and they are very easy to turn accidentally while playing. Maybe we can do a swap if I get it?
You're not really selling the idea -
I might go for the current reissue in january, we'll see.
I haven't had the pleasure of checking out the current ones, but they look good - wouldn't mind one myself to keep my blueburst one company. The only obvious differences I can see are that the truss rod adjusts at the headstock end & has a truss rod cover, so you don't have to take the neck off to tweak it (although I can't remember when I last had to do it), plus it has more authentic pointy knobs (I wonder if these are available as a retrofit for mine ) -
Anyone have some recent back issues of Kerrang?
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to bassoctopus's topic in General Discussion
Sorry can't help, but I remember buying the very first issue with Angus Young on the front. No idea what happened to it. Bet it would be worth a quid or two now. -
It looks remarkably like this correctly attributed & priced columbus: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bass-Guitar-Columbus...=item4cec640c44

£382.42 Oh dear - someone's wasted their cash on a dog look at the hole pattern on the pickguard - its a squier affinity or copy.

Fender Telecaster Bass
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to EssentialTension's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Is there a Mexican Telebass model at all?
There's the Dirnt, but that would have a rosewood board. If any SC 50's reissues are MIM, they'd have the truss rod access at the other end - like the sting and other MIJ/CIJ SC Precisions. -
That'll be after the Mexican neck was fitted, so at least it's Californian sh1t.
I can't think of a Mexican Telebass model with truss rod access at the headstock with a black surround - like a Squier? -

Bass guitar with a double bass sound???
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to saxobass's topic in Bass Guitars
My Danelectro longhorn does it best for me - My Ashborys can be made to sound like an upright as well, but a lot of people don't like 'em.
