around 1978ish - Yamato japcrap jazz bass copy £75 from soho soundhouse. Vox escort 30 guitar amp from one of the Denmark St shops. I sold the yamato when I got a Fender in 1982 not realising that it was OK to have more than one bass.

I have the same kent armstrong jazz lipsticks in my highway 1 jazz - great sounding pickups. The wide pickup spacing of the scheff helps gives it a bit more of a danelectro flavour as well. I like my action super-low and play with a light touch with thomastiks Jazz Flats. When I bought my mustang it did have an annoying buzz in one area of the neck due to one or two uneven frets once I put on the flats as the issue had been masked with higher tension strings and a bit more relief. I got the frets sorted out at the Gallery and it doesn't buzz at all now. Not really had any problems with any other basses though, apart from my '81 QE2 anchor precision which had a few badly fitted frets from new - also sorted at the Gallery.

Before swapping out, have you checked that the pickup isn't set to low for the string height? My MIJ P has plenty of output - although mine was made in 1990, so it could be different.

Funny you should ask that question Pete - often in pubs gigs where I have to be the 'beardyman' (why do soundmen always have beards? - even the female ones) we do Steely Dan's 'Do it again' because I can play the open E with my right hand and fiddle with the levels & eq on the PA with my left hand.

I've just asked him about whether a lollypop set of the hipshot ultralites with 1/2" posts, plus a matching D-tuner are available. If so my CIJ mustang is probably on its way to being transformed into the coolest CIJ mustang ever! D-tuners are dead simple to install - no drilling or fiddling around at all, more or less unscrew the old one and screw on the new one - ensuring you use the supplied flat-topped screws. pop a bit of vaseline on the moving bit, tune it up & set the thumbwheel for the detuned note.

I think people are complaining more about the increasing amounts of overdubs you get on 'live' albums - I remember reading the sleeve notes of one of my Zappa albums where a single song was made up of performances from all over the place spliced together with a guitar solo added in the studio. Sounded good though.

I've just thought of a few more: Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison & Live at San Quentin For sheer energy I'd recommend the Geno Washington 60s set of 'Live' albums Hand Clappin' Foot Stompin' Funky-Butt ... Live! Hipster Flipsters, Finger Poppin' Daddies Running Wild Despite sounding like they were recorded 'back in 68 in a sweaty club', only one of the albums was actually recorded at a real gig though - the other two were recorded 'live in the studio' with an invited audience.

I fitted one to my epiphone thunderbird. It looks like it is a bought-in tuner with hipshot gubbins added to make it into a D-Tuner rather than something made totally by hipshot - like my lollipop late 60s-style D-tuner which matches the hipshot tuners I put on my fretless P. The tuner on mine is good quality - certainly better that the stock epiphone ones. I haven't noticed any play on mine. Certainly not when strung up to pitch. The string post not being long enough worried me at first and I had to cut a bit off my E string to accomodate, but I still managed to get four or five neat winds of the string around it (I use TI Flats) so it doesn't worry me at all. It works perfectly as a tuner and I can drop to D and back to E in the middle of a song for my low D - which is how I use it as I'm too thick to drop to D for a whole song as it confuses me having to transpose just one string.

The stumpy schallers worked perfectly, but always bugged me. The lollys look much better.

I'm just glad that he doesn't make mustang basses - I wouldn't be able to resist getting my wallet out for a replica '66 'aged but not too reliced' Daphne Blue one.

Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall is one of my favorites -along with Donny Hathoway live of course. Has anyone mentioned James Brown Live at the Apollo yet?

I've taken the sticky glossiness of some of my basses including the very glossy neck of my CIJ Mustang using scotchbrite - I think its sold as wire wool substitute. I have a roll of very fine grey stuff which works well for me.

I was going to post a new pic of my fretless hipshot lollyed P, as it it now in addition to the tuners pictured in my first post of this thread, one tuner has now been replaced with a lolly D-tuner - but as its the same as the on in lozbass's pic I guess I'll put the camera down

Two for me - both Behringers both with totally unmemorable names The green limiter pedal maintains dynamics where you want them. The brown acoustic preamp works as a DI & works very nicely to sweeten the tone of an acoustic bass, electric upright or ashbory as well as making my stratacousic sound like a much more expensive guitar.

The meths doesn't taste as good after soaking the strings though No soaking for me - I like dead TI flats. My oldest set is probably about 7 or 8 years old & they still sound great.
