1. For me this depends upon the song-If its a standard I just tend to follow the real book until I internalise it. Most songs are very similar if you know the type of song it is- blues- Autumn Leaves 2-5-1- Rhythm Changes etc. I am still learning to internalise these so end up playing the best Jazz I can find in the car, and when I walk the dog. This is my passion at the mo` However I play in a soul band so would never try to play a Jamerson song without knowing each particular note- ( well as near as I can get it ) Try to get really everything note for note- this is the sign of a good covers band. To get to this i end up taking ages to learn the most simple song and therefore can internalise as I go. Would be much easier the other way but I like to do this as well I can.
2. I can see that a cool 32 channel desk is great for those big- hired in rigs, but for a jobbing group the Mackie with 16 channels is pretty awesome- and the thing is tiny- and light. I myself would prefer real faders, but I no longer have to mix onstage so no problem there.
3. Works great and yes you can limit access so no one other than the band can input any changes. Using an iPhone is really limiting as there can be no changes to eq etc. but great for small changes to a mix already done on the iPad ( where there can be a great deal of adjustment to eq, effects, comp, 6 auxiliaries etc etc.
4. Had a Mackie 1608 for a while now- 16 channel mixer which uses an Ipad for processing. Works great and totally wireless. I have just downloaded the app for to use my Iphone with this- mainly for monitors- all the band are downloading this app as I speak so everyone will be able to sort their own monitor mix. Aint technology wonderful- jus gets faster, more convenient and cheaper. However- if you dont know what you are doing there could be troule ahead- cue the sound of massive screeching feedback!!
5. Kind of blue? Best selling jazz album ever.
6. Really enjoyed this. Quite an individual tone for db. Very funky. Well done pal. Love the solo on the dusty end!!
7. I have a Mackie 1608- the one that uses an Ipad for the processing. Amazing bit of kit- get your sound man ( or a pal who knows what he`s doing ) to walk among your audience to mix out front. No snake needed. 6 auxiliaries- loads of effects- it will remember where you have been so you can recall. It does everything. And its tiny- about £950 though- plus your Ipad.
8. Listen to lee Morgan's album the sidewinder. More groove than walking bass. If you like than go on to autumn leaves rhythm changes etc. one step at a time. Most people that think of jazz are really imagining something different than what is good. Don't start with Jaco weather report. Bona. Wooten. Go straight to groove and swing. You'll like it.
9. The Funky Bunnies- from my daughter ( age 9 )
10. I would have had this but just seemed a little heavy for me. I have a fender tv 15 that has the same vibe but a lot lighter. And a hartke hydrove rig.
11. Is this a reading gig pal. I am in hull and available. Play upright and electric. Possibly you could pm me and give me a few more details and email me the score?
12. Cool looking band actually pal. Great choice of instruments.
13. I have sold and bought loads of basses and amps on here and have strangely had only good experiences. Sent a Marshall Vba 400 amp to Italy. It arrived fine - all 100lbs of it!!
14. For me it's all about the groove but ill be damned if I can't play what some other guy can!! But of course he/ she did compose that particular line. I love it when an amazing player concentrates on the simple line. Jamerson anyone?? There's loads!!
15. I had the exact same rig. Absolutely fantastic tone and probably the loudest rig you can buy for this money. True one trip from the car rig. Magnificent.
16. Two basses gone so I am taking this one off sale.
17.
you wanna try transporting any bass by Honda Fireblade......not easy
Bloody hell pal, wouldnt take my fender jazz on the back of my Harley, GS1200 or fireblade. When I get off my blade I sort of have to unfold myself!!- Its an Age thing.
18. "We all know this one - playing a gig to total silence , not even polite applause , and you know how well you're playing - then right at the end they go nuts for more. " Thats beer that is Dave. My problem has always been that every band I have been in- other than a few dodgy ones when I just started- ( in the 70s!! - ! was very young!! ) have had some sort of a following and have gone down too well from the off. Just got worse from there. Very dissapointing with mediocre musicians- there are always some in each band- that you in effect go down too well. The audience would not know a good or bad band night to night.
19. Bloody hell. Just read this thread. Really you lot should just do it. Sometimes it's great to get out if your comfort zone and it seems obvious that some if the band are not comfortable. Bands were meant to gig so good for you to find another avenue. Best of luck for the audition. I'm surf you'll do fine.
20. Don't suppose you would fancy a trade- got o Loads of quality pedals, fender roadworn jazzes- one sale here , rc 50 looper pedal, basspod live xt? Part trade etc?
21. I`ve read through this thread and can honestly say I can identify with most posts. For me at the mo` I am in a cover band that plays loads of gigs but I have a helpful dep who at present does more than half the gigs. So I do about 4 per month. Big soul band- quite good well paying gigs. I also have massive disrespect for the audience and just enjoy playing. Dont do it for the money. Like to be appreciated but would not give the musical pinion of any drunken punter a second thought. Now I am setting up a lounge type four piece- singer, me on upright, piano and drums. All singers. All top musicians who also happen to be good friends. The main problem being in a band with 7 members is there will always be people holding you back, both in musical ability and also some band members are just plain lazy and do not learn songs well enough. If people dont like a particular situation, change it. I myself have found it so very easy to move on- and up.
22. Most of the time but for definite I know the relation of the note to the root, 3rd 5th 6th,7th etc.
