Sustain?

Thanks Gents, that's good to know. I need to work on my muting now then

Sustain?

Hi All I just bought a cheap second hand bass to use for work. It needs a bit of TLC which i've started, big improvement imo. See here http://basschat.co.u...-bass-refinish/ I redid the wiring yesterday and now that I've got it working it seems to have a massive amount of sustain. At least that's what I would call it, rather than a buzz. Sound the E for example and it plays for ages. It gets to the point where cannot see the string moving but still sound comes from the amp. As soon as I touch the string it stops. Is this just a long sustain or does it point to a wiring fault?? When playing tracks that I know I suddenly have lots of background notes from previously played ones compared to when playing on my other bass. Do all other bass do this and my original is pants and it's just highlighting my poor technique or is something amiss with the new one? Any help or thoughts appreciated.
4. Thanks Gary. You may well have seen it; it was on gumtree. I probably should have walked tbh but it gives me something to play with.
5. I think I’m probably a bit of a fraud putting this in build diaries really but not sure where else it fits tbh. Picked this up on Saturday as a bass to leave at work to save keep lugging my current one about. A standard P-Bass needing some TLC. Should have taken a proper photo before I started but was only intending to give it a clean. From what I can tell it was originally white, or cream maybe, but had been stripped right back at some point. It was then badly finished with what I can only describe as ‘School Desk’ varnish. This included the head stock and neck. The scratch plate was standard white affair that has been painted black. Lots of runs, blobs, flaking etc. Wrong plate to as the truss rod access is at the body end but no cutout. Tested the varnish under the plate it it came off easily enough so proceeded take the whole thing apart and strip the rest of the body. Not too bad looking for a 3 piece body. Couple of spots I couldn't clean as they're holes that have been filled but the varnish has got into. I guess a thumb rest or maybe different scratch plate went there originally. Tried scouring pads etc on the neck and headstock but wouldn't shift it so had to resort to sanding in the end. Neck needs to be sanded further, proper scratch plate needed (I'll stick with black I think) and the pots/wiring are awful. Reassembled, but untreated at present. Not sure how best to do this as I like the look it has (although those spots between the bridge and plate are more noticeable). Any pointers?? It will need to come apart again.
6. I'm not. I do wonder if it would accelerate my ability though. I need to find a band in the same boat or who won't expect much
7. Chav club, not me. Reckon I’m more of a redneck. I drive a lifted 4x4 with big fat tyres, have a beard, wear tatty jeans or combats, boots are order of the day, got bits of car and other useful junk kicking around my yard. I like metal and rock music, drink beer and whiskey, and given the chance would be happy to shoot stuff and watch ladies mud wrestling.
8. remember seeing a band advertised around here called 'Whatever'. Using that anagram whatsit and my name gave me loads but my favourite was 'I Rock God'
9. Been a bad week bass wise. An old rotator cuff injury to my right shoulder has been playing up, can only do 10 minutes or so before I have to stop Tried changing positions and strap height etc but then my fretting hand goes to pot Time to get back into the exercise routine when it settles down a bit I guess
10. Yep, was happening to me too. Was also somewhat perturbed to find after subscribing I got bounced to the same page
11. I like both, to a point. Bon Jovi only so far as New Jersey, not a fan of the newer stuff. Wife likes them so all the albums are in the house but I don't like the newer stuff. Saw them in the mid 90's at wembley, supported by Van Halen. T'was a good gig imo. '99 in the shade' is a great track. Def Leppard, again up to a point, Hysteria and before really. Hysteria must be one of the must have in your collection albums though. I always wanted hair like Joe Elliot, now I just want hair.
12.
does that make sense? I know in my head what I want it to do but describing it in words doesn't seem that easy (today)
can't help with the solution but I would say you want to create a 'playlist' of .pdfs as you would in media player etc.
13. my son, at about 3 yrs old, was playing with a toy crocodile when the health visitor came round. On no, it's not going to bite me is it? she asked. He looked at her for a moment and simply said 'silly. It's not a real one' My 8 yr old daughter often asks if she can listen to 'that angry shouty music you like'. That angry shouty music being Megadeth, Five finger death punch etc. I've had to burn her a CD of suitably filtered tracks
14. Great story and well done to you sir. Your first post brought me out in goosebumps
15. At no one in particular; opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one. The thing is with lowball offers, if someone is desperate to sell, and you're the only offerer (?), you might well bag a bargain. You don't ask, you don't get, right? You might not get anyway but then go to the top of the thread.
16. tend to pluck at the steering wheel while i'm driving sometimes
17. took my bass and headphone amp along to play while the kids did their karate lesson which was a first. suprisingly good environment to have a session.
18.
If anyone wants to borrow mine, they're in a bin liner under a hedge somewhere in Kent.
They're yours are they........dirty boy
19. yeah mine know, I lug my bass to and from work everyday and usually use one of the conference rooms at lunch time for practice. I do keep it fairly low key though. My sales manager insists on calling me Elvis whenever he sees me with the bass though
20. Happy days, sounds like you're in a good place at the mo' then!
21. I would say don't create a members area as having seen this on other sites it does promote cliquieness (sp?) as there will always be underlying jokes or whatever that leech into the main areas and leave a lot of less frequent users out in the cold. It almost becomes an Off topic 'off topic' page. The banter and long term users mixing it up with the newbies is what makes place like this great. As a member of a lot of forums I really do think this place has something unique that sets it way above all others, long may it continue! I don't use or peruse the ads enough to have much of an opinion either way tbh and can see the benefits of both. I do have to open all the ads as I have no idea what an 'Ibanez SRI turbo manglewurzel', or whatever, might be, although being able to sift on price is a bonus.
22. No advice, but I hope it all goes well! Sounds like you're gonna have a great time!
23. always thought it would be guitar tbh but never felt I had the musicality to play (which meant no inclinationto try). Roll forward 20 years when I decided I wanted to give something a go and it was straight to the bass and I love it. Must be my sophisticated and pleasant demeanor.
