I think sometimes you get an over-abundance of musicians in the audience, and a majority of them would rather watch you play than dance about.
Not sure it's musicians tbh. to a lot of people (me included tbh) people playing together in a band is as wonderous and fascinating as sword swallowers or magicians, something to be marvelled at and not necessarily jumping around like a loon to. A mark of respect maybe rather than not digging your sound.
 2.
So like Fat Rich say's, it's down to a person's taste. But for the final word on cool...
Like this a lot. That said, my £40 cash convertor Stagg, sunburst with white guard is the antithesis of what I would really choose to own but is cool because it was accessible for me to learn on. Was always intended to be a buy it and see if you stick with it type purchase but now I'm sticking with it I'd rather spend money on lessons than upgrades.......for now.
 3.
Did anyone click on the weird face floating across the screen?
yes! and the twinkly star
 4.
If you rant at him, demand money from him etc. it can only go one way, the promoter will never book you again, may bad mouth you to the local community and generally nothing good will come from it. If you're nice and understanding, but let him know that you are a little P'd off as you have promoted it/cancelled other opportunities to do it etc., he'll probably feel a bit guilty and want to do you guys a favour in future.
This. he may or may not be rubbish but will undoubtedly have lots of contacts. Never burn bridges unless you absolutely have to.
 5. Saw that on the add at the bottom this morning. I think it looks great! but then my motors tend to look like that too. I even followed the link to the website, saw the rusty ones etc, all very cool. Then I saw the prices not cool...
 6. Little Angels, Young Gods tour at the UEA in Norwich, 1991. Remember it being loud, couldn't hear anything in school next day. No idea who any of the band were so had to look it up, Mark Plunkett on bass. Apparently went on to manage Boyzone and Ronan Keating (Pre Louis I assume???)
 7. To leave ain't believing, so try and be tried. Insufficient funds, insanity and suicide Megadeth - Forclosure of a dream (tbh I reckon most of their stuff applies )
 8.
Anything by steel panther when playing a wedding.
Death to all but metal
 9. Nice one Lowdowner
I've been told more than once I'm a "typical bass player". I'm not sure it's a compliment.
When I first mentioned learning bass to a long time bass playing friend he said that I should go for it, I look like a bass player. Still don't know what that means
 10. Great stuff. I love the fact that it's british and they build their own machines for the job. Kindofa cottage industry done good
 11. You guys all sound far more advanced/experienced players than me and I don't have enough knowledge to comment on the tone issue. but, to my office worker amateur fingers, I've not found my new Rotos any harsher than the probably donkeys years old strings that were on my bass from when I bought it. interesting reading though
 12. Well, just had a brilliant 45mins sat in the sun in the works carpark playing my Bass! Hope the rest of the work day goes so quick. Just have to think of a rain contingencey now
 13. The idea of bringing my bass to work for a lunchtime practice occured to me over the weekend, interesting timing to resurrect this thread (didn't see it before). Bass would have to commute with me (in the car so ok), got a cheapie bass headphone amp (Ogre). Being a noob and mostly just needing to work on scales, rythm etc my fear I guess, is as mentioned above, people coming over to watch/heckle/whatever. I'm not up to audiences yet! Does seem like a good use of an hour though.
 14. Good luck everyone! Had a similiar thought over the weekend. I'm 36, my dad 66, he helped me move a load of paving slabs (3'x2' 2 person lift jobies) and did great considering his age. He has always had an active job. Me, I sit at a computer screen 8 hours a day, do this for the next 30 years and I ain't gonna be lifting slabs at 66. time to get some more activity in my life too I think.
 15. Cool look KB Thanks but not sure the fisherman/golfer style cap would suit either tbh. Yeah i'm fussy (odd looking maybe) Not sure I'd have long hair again anyhow, remembering what a pain it was to look after. My son is now growing his, much to my wifes dismay. Go for it I reckon, he'll probably keep it too
 16.
And the dude with the size 8 head... bloody hell, I've never met anyone with a bigger noggin than mine! I'm 7 3/4. .
Technically you still haven't But I don't do hats (coz they don't bloody fit), baseball style ones don't do up, cowboy style ones look wrong on me. I have a sun hat but I kind of feel like the Pope in it Usually wear a buff if the sun gets too much for my bare scalp
 17.
Not something I would personally use, as I spend most of my time on here reading/posting between bits of work,
This my situation also. Not sure how the chat functions work exactly but would it take away the banter etc from the main threads? You can get some real ROFL moments reading in the OT section
 18.
my arse - for a pound. Any takers? Eh? Eh?
19.
Not if you've got a weird shaped head.
Or a mahoosive one like me (8" UK hat size). Need a small amount of hair, #2 grade usually. Have to concentrate on the goatee these days (and keeping the nostril hair in check it seems)
 20.
Ask Joe Satriani.
ah, yes, but, he is the Silver Surfer
 21. Got to pondering this last night. I think of all the bands I liked when I was a teenager (late 80'searly 90's) and most of the rockers have kept their hair! I’m looking at bands like Megadeth, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Black Sabbath, Guns’n’Roses, Aerosmith etc etc etc. Mostly folk who had long hair and are now 50 or more still have it. Is there a connection with this and playing in a rock/metal band? No doubt there’s a big list of examples disproving this theory but of the bands I like(d) it seems to hold true. Not so of their loyal fan in this case
 22.
is by learning scales/ arpeggios as these are what basslines are made up of, theres no secret, its just scales played with variations.
May not be a secret but to a complete novice at any form of music I didn't know this when I started. I also don't have the ear I learnt scales from a book after I bought my bass as it it least sounded ok doing them, and I could do them. it wasn't until I had some lessons that this was explained to me. Big step tbh. I'm not much further than that now but it does help when you start trying to do a tune.
 23. When I very first bought my bass I had no clue, found what seemed like a good online lesson, number 1 was what are the parts of your bass, number 2, hammer-ons at the dusty end wasn't till someone who knew said wtf that I changed to C scales etc
 24. Mr Bungle - first album. Fancied something different today stubbadubb
