1. Notwithstanding the fact that Gareth Gates started out at the ALC in Bradford, I understand from some people I know who were involved there too, that it's great whilst you are 'in' with them, but if you want to leave it is made very very difficult.....can't say much more than this on a public forum. I also know quite a significant % of their annual income was pledged to that church. I guess it is different strokes for different folks but I have always been wary of them .
2. Jam was my first thought too but it's not really that close to Birstall
3. A search on here or Talkbass should yield details of how to do it: it's just moving a bridging linky thingy if my memory serves me right. Clearly only for the electronically competent....
4. Wifes Punto: 2 Basses in the front, HK Lucas PA 2:1, LMk II Head, Markbass 102T, Toolbox, 4 Unit Rackcase full of lights, 2 PA Stands, Microphone stand, Bass stand.....
5. Played our monthly gig at the Old Tramshed, Saltaire last night. Quite a few of the many invitees rolled up, "Toasted" from this board being 1. We were a little apprehensive as our singer was stuck in traffic and we were doing the first quarter of the set with acoustic guitar, however all turned out well. There has been a change of management and they offered us double our usual money in error, but being honest souls and mindful of the need to cultivate the new management we fessed up! They have offered us gigs up to Easter so a result there. Lots of good feedback from the punters again although one guy came up to us and said we were a bit "stop start" at the beginning of the set....that was the soundcheck!
6.
Feeling somewhat in the firing line here...
Don't worry, at least you'll get a game of football on Christmas Day....
7. Well the map shows its location in Scotland which is a trifle worrying and makes me a tad more suspicious....
8. Sounds like the speaker maybe has blown and what you are hearing could be through the tweeter (assuming it has one, if not I'll get me coat!). This happened to me twice with GK gear. Could be worth checking the connections to the speaker perhaps?
9. I'm going to be there and my 121 with JS "self" build bass will be on Jon Shukers stand. I've just sent Jon the images from the build and he said he will do a display. Obviously I'll be around too some of the time so if anyone wants to discuss the self-build course in more detail, I'd be happy to oblige!
10. Joe I'll run you up a body like that in less than 6 months and my exchange rate is very favourable.......
11.
Thanks for passing it on Rich! Great read. Rattled through it in a few days. Rather than pass it on to the next person who PM's me, I've gone through the thread and made a list. I haven't included the ones who's had it in between, just the ones who wanted it but never got in quick enough. I suggest you add your name to the bottom of the list with your date added. I'll send a PM to the first on the list and if I have no response after a week then I'll move onto the next person and put the first back to the bottom of the list. Sound alright with everyone? Here goes: dudewheresmybass - Sep 20 2007 ped - Sep 20 2007 Bassassin - Sep 20 2007 MacDaddy - Oct 21 2007 Super_Mario_Bass - Oct 21 2007, Chezz55 - Oct 25 2007 lobematt - Nov 26 2007 steve-soar - Dec 10 2007 yorks5stringer - Feb 14 2008 guyl - Apr 2 2008 acidbass - May 2 2008 five-string.co.u... - May 2 2008 queenofthedepths - May 24 2008 aceuggy - Jun 14 2008 AndyMartin - Oct 2 2008
Take me off the list please, I've had it!
12.
Keith - your bass looks wonderful. You must be very very happy.
It's available to 'view' at the Old Tramshed on Thursday or CB Jam this coming Friday, 17th Oct!
13. A few photos with the meister and myself, the bass reshined, action sorted and generally fettled!
14. Maybe we should have a new Thread called "Self-build Dairy"? Personally I find this section fascinating and posted my dairy as an aid to anyone who may be considering either doing something similar or building it themselves from scratch. P.S. Do you smoke in your car?

16. +1 re the fret dressing, as after doing it up and down with the wide file, the diamond stone, and then across with the individual fret file, we wrapped some of the finishing sheet used for the body around the fret file and smoothed each one off individually again to regain the round edge profile. 'Luckily' I have only 21 frets as when sanding the neck on day 4, I did not clamp it to the bench. It slipped and hit the ground, as the fretboard was at that stage untrimmed and proud of the neck, a corner broke off back to the 22nd fret slot and was unrepairable. Jon improvised with something that resembles the slap groove on later JD's but at the end of the neck. Looks quite cool IMHO! You can see it on the photos on 23rd at 9.45 pm before and after although the white masking tape on the end of the neck confuses the view a little on the modified version. I'm taking it back on Saturday as I have a gig quite close by and will buff it right up, hopefully drop the action and then take some proper photos.
17.
That is absolutely brilliant mate! Lovin the pic of Ruby! Such a cool dog! Everytime I go there with my mate who enjoys coming along for the ride, he absolutely bricks it because he isn't fond of big dogs! As for the course, I'd really love to try my hand on it. I am, by my own admission, absolutely feckin useless at stuff like that, so if Jon could help me make a good bass, then he really is a God among men! To be fair he isn't far off that already
Jon was saying he has already had a few comments about Ruby re the ear-protectors! Ruby is so soft for a Rotty, so much so I had to check with him if she was one! RE the skills required, I regard myself quite handy on the old psychomotor skills, do a lot of DIY around the house and car yet struggled using the spoke shave for the neck and on spraying technique. Having said that I reckon I could replicate my new bass with access to the relevant tools. Am considering an Aldi router, on offer this week! Some of the skills are based on experience, areas I thought did not need further rubbing down he could see a plain as day!
18. Does a fretless sound different in Welsh?
19.
this looks absolutely great! these five day courses are great, aren't they? how much did the finished price come to for you, if you don't mind me asking? mine was £990, but mine was only four string, with a natural finish, plain ash, 2 band EQ etc.
Thanks for the kind comments. Yes, the basic price was £900, but is now £950 I understand. However I paid extra for the SD soapbars and STC 3 band preamp so it cost me £1100 all told. However the cost was secondary to actually making my own bass to my spec: let's face it I could have bought a Fender USA for £700, equally I could have paid £1500 for a Fender Marcus Miller V as well. There are not that many people who can say "I hand-made my bass": I'd say it was 95-7% me with 3-5% of JS showing me the first step or rescuing my mistakes! Re the 5 day course, I must be very slow/ fastidious as it it ran to 7 days in total: 3 days, then 2 then a 14 hour one on the end. Needless to say I have to go back to adjust the truss again, check the setup, put in the rest of the cover plate screws and give the body a good buff again! This was a true 1-2-1 'course' with no-one else on it so I had JS at my beck and call all the time, it wasn't as if he was busy building other basses to my exclusion.
20. +1 for Nearly Dan who I've seen 3 or 4 times now. I believe we have a Basschatter who is with The Dan Collective and who are also worthy of a listen! Re Steely Dan, I was very priveleged to see them on their sole UK Tour visit in the 70's. They only did a couple of dates, London and Leeds I think and then, hacked off with touring went back to the States. The band was as per the early albums and included David Palmer on vox and Mike McDonald on keys. I saw them at Leeds Uni, it was so hot the band were throwing up off stage. I know memory plays tricks but possibly the best gig I have ever witnessed and I was going to around 2 a week at that time (had to spend the grant wisely!). I still have the flyposter for the gig, ripped off a wall in the Uni or Poly at the time. Seen the 'polite' reformed Steely Dan twice since but don't think their recent recorded/live output is anything like as accomplished as the earlier stuff.
21.
That looks stunning and I look forward to hearing it in use some day !!
Then just come and see the Idle Hands, dates on this site! 22.
very nice indeed, very similar to my soon to be inbound shuker....didn't happen to see it while you were there did you?
There are basses in all different states of readiness, Jon told me on Friday he built 6 necks including 2X 6 string ricky types! He puts in at least a 6.5 day week and then all his emails when he gets home: I don't know how he manages it!
