1. Lovely Bass but I'd get it off that bed of maggots ASAP!
2. My 5 String Jazz type build with Jon Shuker is 4 screws plus neckplate: my G&L 5 String has 6 screws and no neckplate. The G&L is thicker wood so as said earlier has deeper neck pocket. Why not just do a neck-through instead?
3. You'll find on a few stands now there is a label which warns users not to use with Gibson or other brands that have nitro finishes due to the colour from the rubber padding transfering across. I have a triple Stagg stand of this ilk!
4. Yep, it looks in bad condition but I'll give you £15 for it as long as you don't tell anyone...... and my serious answer is it all depends on what you want for it. You've made a full disclosure around its conditon, you say it plays well so price it accordingly and see what the response is. It is however a buyers market......
5.
+1. ive done the same course as york4stringer, and what he says is true. a lot of it is about measurements, but then a lot of it is just done by eye, and jon's done so many it just comes naturally to him. anyone else think jon's got one of the best jobs ever?
If you enjoy building them around 70 hours a week and then going home and dealing with their detailed emails for around another 14 hours a week...... I hasten to add this is solely my perspective and not anything he has mentioned or intimated: as a breed I think we are all fairly needy!
6.
Yeah, he's getting on a bit but still got a really powerful voice and does some great piano and trumpet playing Played some 12 string too. He comes down to Swansea a couple of times a year and it's always a fun gig. Cheers Alun
His daughter "Kyla Brox" was the first act on at the Bassday in Manchester last Sunday.
7. Alternatively one of the stock Jazz type Shukers is only £650, a hand-made bass for the price of an American machine-made Fender
8. If you visit the stewmac website it shows you how to do it: if he has done a course he should have all the right tools/techniques, also this may help too. http://www.accesswave.ca/~derekn/routertut...akingtemps).htm Maybe practise on some scrap first?
9. Having watched him at close hand for over a week, I have to say a lot of his skill is in the handbuilt nature of what he does. I expected lots of jigs and templates but he does a lot just by eye, especially the necks and even though my bass was relatively quite unsophisticated construction wise, it all fits together well. My bass built under his tutilage is on the "Build" section and called 1-2-1 with Jon Shuker or something like that, it's now on p2.
10. When I did mine it was no longer than 1 hour actually routing those areas but then you end up paying for the expertise, jigs/templates etc and final finishing which takes a lot longer. Would you cut/make the rear cavity plate yourself? It's not rocket science and if your friend is on a course they should know what to do..... Disclaimer: I could be totally wrong on this!
11. Yes, I always check my batteries with my tongue to see if they are running down, and it wakes me up before a gig...
12. Can I just go against the consensus here and suggest you look at songs you like from any source and try and arrange them for a 3 piece? With the exception of Bohemian Rhapsody and I'm Not in Love (OK and maybe a few 1000 more!) there must be any number of songs that could benefit from a fairly basic arrangement? I appreciate what you have said about the guitarist having the lions share to do but it could be worth just going for songs you like rather than trying to unearth bass-heavy guitar-light songs? I could however be horribly, horribly wrong but it works for us: come along and see! Unashamed plug: The Old Tramshed, Saltaire, Thursday 13th November 8.30!
13. Next year I'm going to actually try out some of the basses on display, once I have my all slap chops perfected...is it obligatory just to slap? Was every bassist trying out yesterday actually in a funk band?
14.
I want to know whether anyone found out who strung the bass in the banner ad, and if so, what happened to him.
I think they drowned him ( or her)..... Great day by the way as long as you were parked close by!.
15. "The White Music Tour": he's not one of those skinhead bands is he?
16.
thanks for all the above. will keep you posted on progress. Just found this useful (I hope?) tutorial: http://www.accesswave.ca/~derekn/routertutorial/ ttfn
Thanks for this, really useful! NB Bought myself a cheap table, have to see how I'll get on!
17. "Nah, they must be THRUSH agents.... " You can always tell a THRUSH agent...cos they're always singing. I'll get my (trench) coat!
18. and there was me thinking it was Aids, globalisation and poverty.....
19. But the name "The Bass Fence" might attract the wrong sort of customers... Especially if we had a Bargain Booze counter as well!
20. "It has 145 pieces of wood..." That should help reverse the downturn in the US logging industry.....now I'm an expert having watched Ax Men! Stump Cross Logging-what a team!
21. "There's a muli-storey right next door " Fine, but is there anywhere to park my car? Thanks for the info!
22. What's the parking like and any recommendations for good places please?
