1. Agreed w/Fender. Gibson are having a massive resurgence in popularity round where I live, but I just don't see the appeal..
2. I use In Absentia and Deadwing by Porcupine Tree for a lot of things, as well as Absolution (MUSE), Sacrament (Lamb of God) and Last Kind Words (DevilDriver). I also use Death Magnetic, St. Anger (Metallica) and Vapor Trails (Rush) as 'negative' references - if my mixes sound like these albums, start again!
3. Not unless it's a really good bass line.. I'm usually air-drumming...
4. I wouldn't say so. They could be set up for two different tunings, or perhaps with different string gauges to suit different styles..
5. I only really have trouble remembering a tune if I've not practised it enough.. Most of my bands' songs are completely second nature to me, so I can concentrate on the stage show and not worry about whether I'm going to change to the right riff or not because it just happens automatically. If we've not played a particular song for a few months then I'll need a bit of memory jogging though.. I guess it comes down to how often you play the songs and how you mentally approach the song and the composition of the bass line. So for example, as opposed to having a riff 8 times with 8 different variations, have maybe 3 variations, and have them in an order that makes it easy to keep track of where you are, so for example V1-V2-V1-V2-V3-V1-V2-V3 ... If that makes sense?
6. Not a bad day by any means - productive band practice, complete with new tunes being written, decisions being made and not a single argument! Definitely need to do more practice at home with a metronome though, completely forgot how to count this morning.
7. Hiya mate, can you give us any more info on this bass? Age? Level of use (it looks pretty dusty)? Reason for sale? Also, whereabouts are you based?
8. Rock tends to be guitar and drum-led, so construct your lines to thicken the guitar parts. Don't be afraid of doubling riffs and pounding root notes in triplets or quavers either.. Keep It Simple, is my way of lookin at it
9. Guess it totally depends on what wood it's made of.. Wonder if it'll be any good for metal?
10. .. What defines a band as 'real'? They all have to go through the same channels and bullshit :s
11.
Any chance I could get a wee looky at some parts?? I'm looking for anything bass clef to practice my reading on
+1 please!! Would be so much appreciated!
12.
For example, the drummer has now invited us to go and see one of her mates bands perform. So its left me thinking " Is this her motive for getting us all together?"
I'm not sure how you can see anything sinister in being invited as a band to go and see another band perform.. I'd say it's more of an effort to socialise as a unit, both internally and externally. I can't say I've worked with any especially difficult musicians, I've been incredibly lucky in that respect.
13. That seems to be the way it works with Fender, aye. It's the same with a lot of famous brands - massive hype but in reality not necessarily the best of it's kind. an example I use of this is Jack Daniel's - sure it's a famous name and everyone's heard of it, but I've tasted better whiskeys of it's ilk.
14. I'm sceptical tbh - I have a feeling British Lion will sound like a collection of songs that didn't quite make it on to various Iron Maiden albums for whatever reason..
15. Tricky, I certainly wouldn't be comfortable having it chucked at me to play off the bat in the studio.. A couple of days hard practice would easily sort it though, imo.
16. Yeah.. can't say it's particularly this kind of bass playing that gets my juices flowing.. It'd be interesting to try and learn these tracks from a technical and general education point of view though, and I can appreciate that it's very good
17. +1 to the comments on the VM Jazz made somewhere above - absolutely gorgeous bass, lovely neck, again the only trouble really is weight and electronics. I've also found the nut on the output jack can wiggle itself loose sometimes, although tbh I've found that to be a feature of virtually every bass I own with that kind of jack, so whether it's me, the individual instruments I own or an inherent design fault idk. Both of my main basses are Squier, would seriously recommend them to anyone
18. Op - it makes sense from a music theory point of view, it works. I tend to think of this kind of thing though in terms of *play random thing* Does it work? If not, work out what you did ad adjust it so it'll work within the 'rules'. If it does work or sound good, then leave it alone. I sometimes play fills that I honestly couldn't tell you how they relate to the chord without pen and paper, but they sound good to me, so.. They stay
19.
Someone from my home town, maybe I'll go and have a look at it.
I'm up that neck of the woods Saturday night - well tempted to ask the guy for a quick trial!
20. It's just occurred to me that my band's EP has been out for over a month and I haven't shown you guys! So pleased with it, absolutely loved every moment of this EP. It's a 4-track endeavour entitled "Conviction Pt. I - Innocence & Guilt". I think we have it in both .Wav and .MP3 file formats, both of which are fully downloadable, free, and comes with an obligatory acoustic version of one of the tracks too. So have a listen, you don't even need to download it, and let us know what you think
21. Friday's gig was friggin awful. Sloppy as all hell, forgot lyrics, got a throat infection and concussion so I could barely stand never mind do backing vocals.. And we somehow tripped the power halfway through a song, and we were left standing on stage like lemons for 10 minutes until someone found the fusebox.. Nightmare.
22. I'm not sure what the problem is with the bass line in the song you linked? I think it's fine?
23. Absolutely gorgeous - have you still got the ashtrays?
24. Quavers and semi-quavers I tend to count (1 + 2 +... 1 e + a 2 e + a.. etc.) For other rhythms I tend to a little head bob, keeps the missus amused when she's watching at gigs. For melodies, I just kind of.. well. Memorise them. No humming or singing while I play, I'd distract myself!
