1. Ok... so keep your place, keep it simple, know the tempos. Most importantly, keep the groove. Gotcha. Cheers fellas, I reckon those play-a-longs would a great help, yes please!
2. Uhh yeah, the setlist.. In no particular order: All Of Me (Simone) All The Things You Are (Hammerstein) Blue Bossa Could It Be You (Porter) Cry Me A River (Hamilton) Favela (Jobim) Green Dolphin St. (Washington) I Got It Bad (Duke) It Don't Mean A Thing (Duke) Lullaby of Birdland (Shearing) Misty (Garner) My Funny Valentine (Hart) Night & Day (Porter) Satin Doll (Duke) Sunny Side Of The Street (Fields) Take The A Train (Duke) Watermelon Man (Hancock) You Took Advantage Of Me (Rogers) And it'll be drums and guitar, hopefully keys too although that's not set in stone yet.
3. Aha well, surely the... disagreement is purely between you and him? If he decides to try and drag your name through mud because of this then you know you can lay waste to his operation, providing you kept correspondence that proves how much of an arrogant penis he is..
4. HELP! I've been asked to do a wedding gig as part of a jazz band, it'll be a 3/4 piece setup, just playing standards. I have the lead sheets, and I can follow them easy enough with a bit of practice.. I'm just not sure about what I can get away with.. My knowledge of modes isn't up to scratch either, although that is something I'm currently working on. Any tips or advice? Do's and don'ts? I've been through the pinned Wedding Gigs thread as well, so I sort of have an idea of how to behave with the guests and the B+G..
5. That dude sounds like the last thing anybody needs within a 100 mile radius.. Well done you for getting shot of the situation
6. Excellent news! I love it when things like that happen, it's quite refreshing to work with people who aren't iceholes...
7. Exactly, fellas... Personally I don't see why anyone uses Line6 amps at all, they make me angry just looking at them. Even worse when you use gear that's so temperamental and only works with specific brands.. Ouch. Unfortunately we've been booked on to a boatload of shows with these bellends over the next few months... That was before we knew how flakey they are. I think the most depressing thing I've heard from the band internally, was the drummer.. "Well I did say I didn't have any transport for the kit, and none of you lot offered, so I just assumed that it was being sorted" *facepalm* Luckily, that was 3 hours prior to rehearsal, and not a show..
8. With reference to the conversation a few pages ago about people making the time to learn new tunes for next r/h... If a band member says they'll learn 3 new tunes, then they should learn those 3 tunes, regardless of the circumstances (within reason, naturally). So what if you get in from work at 7/8 at night? Put the time in and make the effort - If you don't, why should anyone else? True story from Friday's gig... We lent a Marshall combo out to the headliner's guitarist, who has a Line6 half stack (which had been smashed by the main support band), and appropriate pedal board etc. This conversation ensued between our drummer and their guitarist: G: Ahhh, you've got Marshall.. D: Why, what's wrong with it? You know it works fine.. G: Yeah, but it's not Line6. D: So? G: Well I've got this footswitch that only works with Line6 amps, it tells the amp what to do D: Yeah but you've got the rest of your pedalboard there? G: Nahh mate, it won't work, my footswitch won't tell the Marshall what to do, 'cos it's not Line6 D: Ok, whatever. You can either do the show with the Marshall and have a few less effects and what have you, or you can cancel your show. G: F*ck it, we'll go home. Best ring all our fans and tell them to not bother coming now. These jokers bailed on a show because they couldn't have one or two FX, and let down the venue and most of their fans.. >< I'm just glad that not too many other bands do the same!
9. Looks f*ckin hilarious! Go have fun!
10. Another +1 to playing with other people, especially 1 on 1 sessions with a good drummer. Even if you're not playing anything drastic or earth-moving, it's amazing how good it will sound if the drummer's creative with his beats and styles. It will teach you how to read drummers as well, and help you develop a 'same wavelength' relationship with the drummer in question, allowing you to transition smoothly between moods, ideas and sections. This will then translate into your band - the band will as a result have a close-knit rhythm section, and be noticeably better because of it. Don't forget your theory either, that's important if you want to keep up with other musicians. I wish you the best of luck!
11. Just got in from a gig in Crewe.. f***ing mental. I was playing with my thrash outfit Synapse, and we opened up the night. Decent gig (although the the headliners bass rig was f*ckin awful, not a suitable tone for metal at all!), despite my arms seizing up mid way through the set.. finished with the big kahuna, and the place went off like a bomb. Afterwards we got the usual adulation from nearby guitarists & drummers (our two just attract them for some reason), and someone started talking to me about Communism, pretty surreal. On after us, was a punk band from around Manchester. They were doin' alright, until the singer got wayyyyy too into it, tripped over his bass player, fell into the Pa, and brought the rig crashing down, smashing the headliner's guitar amp in the process. Only at a punk gig eh? Once the rig had been rebuilt, the show resumed, only for their bass player to break his E-string... And me, being the good samaritan I am, very kindly lent him my 20YO Squier J so he could finish his set. Quick swap of basses, and an impromptu tuning, away he went. Luckily he managed not to break any of my strings, and the dude was ever so grateful afterwards. SWould any of you guys be willing to do that for a brother in need? Or am I just too nice?
12. The OP definitely needs to cut back on the juice! :L I've done plenty of things like that, esp. regarding other bands on the bill while a couple of members are still in the dressing room.. Need to remember to keep my opinions to myself sometimes..
13. Stuart Zender, his days in Jamiroquai are absolutely awesome to me!
14. I used a clip distortion plugin on Logic 9 to achieve the vocal distortion... Thank you for the feedback people, again timing is something I'm working on, but I'll be sure to be more diligent and disciplined about it..
15. Thank you very much The timing is something I'm working on, it's not an easy song to play.. I used a Boss ODB-3 with the treble way down and he bass turned up, the balance knob at about 2 o clock and the gain at about 11, then mixed it with a clean DI track.. If anyone's interested in knowing how we got it
16. Alright guys, here's my band's cover of Hysteria by Muse.. Any constructive criticism is very welcome We recorded the drums bass and rhythm guitar live together, then overdubbed the lead guitars and vocals. I personally mixed the track in Logic Pro 9, so any comments with regards both musicality and mixing would be much appreciated! http://soundcloud.com/jaybhall/hyseria-mkii
17. My GAS died somewhat recently, I think that's more a case of simply not having the room for any more gear! Plus I get sentimental about my basses, so it makes it hard for me to sell any.. Such a pac-rat.
18. My two best basses are my Squier Jazzes.. I suffer from snobbery from a few people on my course, who've at one stage asked me to do some session work for them, then abruptly got someone else the second they saw that I use Squier gear.. One person ended up doing the bass work themselves and it sounded like... Words don't even describe :| But I don't have a problem using my twins. They're far better to me than any other bass I've tried, including a lot of US Fender stuff... Meh. What works best I guess.
19. Footloose. I played in the pit band for the colleges production of Footloose.. Dear Lord. Still, at the end of it all I got paid £50 and got myself a girlfriend, so who am I to complain really? At least Blood Brothers the following year had decent music!
20. No knob jokes really except when I ask the drummer to turn me on.. I keep my amp next to him There's always a lot of G-string jokes too..
21. Hell no! I understand that the venues want to stay in competition with each other and all that, but at the end of the day the more gigs you do the better imo - if there's a pub in your town you haven't played yet (out of courtesy or whatever else) there could be god knows how many fans just waiting to be alerted to your existence. Not only that, I fail to understand why a band might be detracting trade from a particular pub by playing somewhere else - maybe that pub should try and get one up with promotion or something? Plus, with lots of people moaning about the lack of a music scene these days (especially in my area), to limit yourself to one pub in a given town only helps to ensure the continuation of a crappy music scene, whereas if you rotate all the venues round, you'll give other bands a chance and help to create the sense of a living, moving local scene. Is it a common practice? The only time either of my bands ever get asked that is when we play Academy Unsigned in Manc. So luckily it's not common in this part of the country AFAIK.

Greetings!

Thank Len ^^ Yeah, I'm sure mine is an actual converted Soviet tank, it's a pain getting it in and out venues!
23. Hi all! I'm Jay, a bass player from the north-west of England. I've been playing bass for 5 years now, and in my arsenal I have.. Squier Jazz (Black) made in Korea circa '91 Squier Jazz (Natural) MIM (I don't know the date) Dean Metalman Z (Black) Cort C-4 (Natural) Vintage StingRay copy (Natural) Behringer BXL3000A combo I know lots of people knock Behringer gear, but that combo has done a crackin job over the past couple of years!! I've attached a few action shots, each with a different bass. I've not taken the natural Jazz out gigging yet, it's my baby
