Seth is confermed for south wales in September, i was told personally by Andy Long (the man who organizes the bass events for the club). Date is still to be realeased, but the venue will most proberly be the clubs main venue, The Crosskeys Hotel and Pub in Crosskeys (North of Newport, South Wales)
Seth's South Wales gig will now be at Blackwood Miner's Institute ( not that far from Caerphilly and Newport) on Friday 26 Sept I believe more dates are being announced in the next couple of weeks. Very sad, I was a big admirer of his playing. His work with Allan Holdsworth was superb, Alun

I don't see ( oh dear, pun not intended!) a problem with it really. As you said, your ear is the ultimate tool playing fretless, but your eyes will help you get close. I don't think it's any worse than looking at the neck of a fretted. Once the muscle memory gets used to the bass, you'll find yourself needing to look less. Cheers Alun

You could also think of it as an E major triad with an A in the bass - E/A. Cheers Alun

I've been using a Stealhplug with Windows XP for a year or so and find it very good. The bundled software is pretty much worth the price in itself. Cheers Alun

I have a POG and Micro POG and both are fantastic. They do however only do octaves, no other intervals so may or may not meet your harmony needs. Those octave sounds are though, to my ears anyway, much more "real" sounding than the Whammy tones. The Whammy does however allow you to do all the swoopy pitch shift effects too, which the POGs don't - the processed note is there or it isn't, there's no "transition" . The POG and Whammy come with PSUs, the Micro POG will run off a big standard Boss/Zoom, etc 9V adaptor. None take batteries as far as I know. Cheers Alun

Breathe! Although it might be difficult, try and stay calm and remember to enjoy yourself. And, odd as this might sound, try not to worry about mistakes - we're all human and sooner or later will make mistakes Just stay calm and keep going, the worst thing you can do is stop. It'll be great I'm sure Cheers Alun

Oh ok then.... No, but I can slap a monkey Happy now? On a more serious note, I have messed about with slapping on my NS Wav and it's not bad. The bridge piezos do pick up a fair amount of the attack and you could always boost the tone control which just makes Wavs clicky sounding anyway Cheers Alun
When you are on the page you wish to extract the picture from, go to Tools > Page Info. Then click the media tab, and the image will be (from my experience of the cafe press pages) one of the 400 x 400 background images somewhere near three quarters of the way down the list Once you've found it using the little preview at the bottom, you can click Save As... and save it wherever you like, just make sure you have the right file extension
Cool Thanks for sharing. I only got it yesterday so still experimenting but basically had it aimed at the bridge about 6-8 inches away with the front mics , which have a 90 degree pick up ( the rear ones do 120 degrees so better for bands, ambience, etc). IIRC, the gain was on Medium with the level boosted a tiny bit. Did pick up my breathing a lot but a bit of time sorting out positioning would cure that. Haven't tried recording arco yet, may try that later. Haven't experimented enough with it yet but so far I'm very impressed. Cheers Alun

Hi, just wondering if anyone has ever attempted miking up an EUB? I've sometimes been frustrated by the fact that the acoustic sound of my Wav isn't always that faithfully reproduced by the piezo pickup so this morning I tried recording a little using the internal mics on a Zoom H2 recorder and voila - very realistic upright bass I may need too much mic gain for live work ( might try it next week as I've got a couple of gigs on upright) but for recording it sounds great. Cheers Alun
Most of the focus in this isn't on bass, but I thought I'd post it anyway, because keeping that tight in such a ridiculously difficult song at such a breakneck pace is...mental. Props! I have no idea who the guy is, but...legend. Skunk Funk
James Genus Mainly seems to play upright these days but great on either.
My favourite (Apart from the classic School Days), is the Vertu album from about 2000.
Good choice, especially for people coming from a rock background. What I've heard of the new one Toys of Men sounds promising too. Cheers Alun

The Peel in Kingston upon Thames. Unfortunately, there was a power cut during the support band's set which took out the whole street. Electricity board said it wouldn't be back till midnight, so everyone was sent home. It actually came back on at 10.30 as we shut the van door!!! AAAARGH
At some point I'd like to get a '75 jazz - that's my birth year
I want a 74 Jazz for the same reason

My two main basses are active but I do like the simplicity of passive. I'm tempted to go down the Q-Tuner route and maybe some Villex stuff so that I have some control on the bass without worrying about exactly how long the battery has been in my bass Cheers Alun

Anyone had a good experience with bow and EUB?
Alun replied to dougal's topic in EUB and Double Bass
My NS Wav is a lot better than I expected for bowing. With the pickup set to arco and the tone rolled off it's pretty realistic, although the dynamics are hard to control ( admittedly that's probably more down to me than the bass!!) Cheers Alun -
I have a Cort C5. After the first time I changed the battery, it kept going dead and then coming back on again (loud pops as it did so). Originally, I thought it was the leads I was using and kept replacing everything to no avail - damn intermittent issues! Anyway, there is a ground cable in the battery/electronics cavity which is heavily soldered to the casing of something. (sorry, long time since I have done this so can't fully remember). Anyway, that joint was a dry one, and eventually fell off completely. I remember it being a bugger to solder back on because the casing wasn't very good at taking the solder. I don't know if this is relevant, buy at least it's something to look for?
Thanks HH, I recently resoldered my battery cavity for a similar issue and you're right, it was a pain to find the cause! My bass has behaved since I posted ( sod's law!) so we'll see what happens. Thanks for your suggestions. Cheers Alun

There are plenty of ways of doing it but this is the one I find easiest .... - the 12th fret is an octave about the open string so has the same "name" note - 12th fret on your E string is an E. After that the notes repeat, 1st fret is an F so 13th fret will be an F, 3rd is a G so 15th is a G, etc - to make a note flat, you play one fret lower. To make it sharp you play one fret above. - There are only seven notes which aren't sharp or flat - CDEFGAB So, if you learn where those seven notes are in the first 12 frets, you can work out where everything else is That means learning, on a four string bass, 28 notes ( 7 per string) and applying the logic above to find the others rather than trying to remember, if you had a 24 fret four string, 200! As Bilbo says though, the real art is knowing how those notes relate and how to use them, but this will get you started. Hope that helps, Alun

Yeah, I was taught to use it when I first started many thousands of years ago so have stuck with it. Either 1 finger per fret or 124 for some lower fret things. Cheers Alun
if it's a sort of crackling sound it could just be dirty or something, try using some contact cleaner on it. You can buy it from most car related shops i think. EDIT: here's some in maplin, only £4 so worth a go.
Thanks mate, Alas, it's not a crackling at all, just a single loud pop like a jack being pulled out. Have been trying to reproduce it today and failing miserably, it's totally well behaved for now Cheers Alun
