Hi, I like the Blackbird thing - very nice. At first I was missing the low A under the chords at the start but it works really well going into the groove. So What is quite nice, but the phrasing on the melody is slightly off. The melody should be all 8th notes, but you seem to be holding the top note for a whole beat . It may be you've learnt it from a version I've not heard, but I'd recommend the original Miles Davis version if yuo don't already have it The Iceman sounds nice too. Day Tripper's a nice one, Penny Lane is also good fun and gets you covering a lot of the neck. Cheers Alun

In fact I really fancy a passive six so may have to think about getting one of these and sticking a Q Tuner in it if you can get them that reasonably ( nothing wrong with the onboard EQ in all honesty, I just want to live a battery free life )

It's nice to see someone making an affordable 6 string Curbow now that Cort stop at 5 and I'm not sure if the Tanglewood ones are still about ( or even got into production, I tried a prototype a while back). I tried a fretless one a few weeks back and couldn't believe how light it was compared to my Cort. Very powerful EQ too. Cheers Alun
The exercises are for people who wish to improve their playing, if you don't wish to improve then turn the page and ignore them. There are bass players, and bass playing musicians, most of the people who posted on this thread appear to be the former, obviously with no desire other than to do what they do. As to 'technique destroys creativity', what a load of b***ocks, how can it ?. Unless the boundaries of your creativity are very close together, or you have a great natural musical ability, then improving your playing technique means that you'll be able to play what you want when you want, with less energy expended. Also learning something new opens up new avenues of playing, thus expanding your creativity.
Well said Kev, have a +1 from me Cheers alun

The "400bpm" thing came up on Talkbass a while back and Janek did concede that he though of the exercises as 8th notes, not 16ths, so it's really 200bpm in 16th notes. Still quite nippy but closer to achievable

Having just got back from Todd's masterclass ( and having seen Steve and Yolanda several times), all I can say is, if you can, - GO TO THIS GIG!
-
Ah, that's the one from www.behindthenotes.com - they've got some other good stuff too including Etienne Mbeppe and Veron Reid. It is a great little clip. Cheers Alun

Hello. I've had a few PMs asking when the Panic Room CD is coming out so I'm pleased to say it is now available for pre-order. The CD will be released in the shops on April 21, but will be available from the website as soon as they get back from the pressing plant ( within the next 2-3 weeks ) so you can get it a good few weeks before it hits the shops and be the envy of all your friends Plus, the initial run comes in a limited edition digipak with a 20 page colour booklet. Once these have sold out, all future runs will be a standard jewel case with an 8 page booklet. To hear a sampler of the album, please visit my Myspace page. Cheers Alun PS Panic Room tour dates now in the Gigs forum

The perfect combination of workable basses. Add a five string of some description and that's every paying gig pretty much covered
If it's an active bass with a preamp and a battery then 25k will be the correct value. You can't replace it with 250k as this wouldn't work right with the electronics.
Thanks Bod. Any idea what the effect would actually be? I'm assuming the "k" is the pot's resistance but I don't have a lot ( if any!) elctrical knowledge so am curious to see know what the difference would be. Cheers Alun

Hello all. The volume pot on my Curbow is starting to play up so I'm looking at replacing it. According to the Cort schematic it's an audio taper pot rated at 25k ( it's a Bartolini Ml1 humbucker with a Fishman active preamp). My question to you infinitely-wiser-than-me folk is - what difference would a different value pot make? The reason I ask is that I'm struggling to find a mini 25k pot but there are 250k ones everywhere. Thanks, Alun

The Sebastopol club in Pontypool, S Wales for me on the last night of a quick tour with New York vocalist Marlene Verplanck ( such a great name!). She's still got a few gigs in England over the next week, we were doing the Welsh leg. Quite a fun gig, really pleased with the sound of my NS Wav EUB too. Cheers Alun
That's the chappy! Only 76 were made or summat. They go for around £280 now. Thought about getting one just for fun and to be a bit different. Don't suppose anyone here has one?
Yeah, I've got one of the newer ones and I think at least one other person here has one too. Great fun once you get used the intonation. Cheers Alun
Cheers Alun Might have to take the plunge and order one... fun sounds like a good description, I'm just not sure how practical it would end up being in my trio context... still might be worth a go
It is very good for filling out the sound. Both the full size and Micro POGs track pretty much perfectly ( to my years the octave up on the full size POG is a tiny bit more stable) and the low octave keeps tracking right down to the lowest notes on my B string ( although you can barely hear them ). It also tracks chords without any issues so you can make a LOT of noise. I've used mine in a few ways ( other than recording widdly demos!) - using the octave up settings for an 8 string effect ( or 12 with the detuned setting on the full size POG), using it as a regular octave-down octave divider, adding just a little octave up and down to the direct signal to fill out the sound without it obviously being "harmonised". Plus you can take the direct signal out and do the whole organ/guitar/12 string guitar/mandolin impersonations The octave down is also stable enough to make a nice bass synthy sound with the direct signal removed. Yes, I like my POGs! Cheers Alun
