  1. For sale is my ACG J-Type 5-string, No. 0078. I bought it on here last year, and it's a beautiful thing - the only reason I'm parting company with it is I just use my other basses more, and this deserves to be played and enjoyed! All the original specs are still on Alan's website here - http://archive.acguitars.co.uk/portfolio/0078-j-type-5-string/ It's in really excellent condition. For the purposes of full disclosure, the only marks I can find are a couple of small scratches on the back near the control cavity cover, and two tiny marks on the fingerboard between the 2nd and 3rd fret, which you can't feel, and can barely see. These all pre-date my ownership. I replaced the original EQ01 filter preamp with an East Uni-Pre. The bass balances beautifully, and has great resonance and sustain, along with a huge tonal range from the pickups and preamp. UK shipping is included in the price, as is a Stagg lined hard case to ship it in if required. You're welcome to come and try before you buy - I'm just off the A3 near Woking in Surrey. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades. NOW SOLD.
  2. Except it was listed in the category "Bass Guitars"...
  3. B*njos. Always make me think of that film, Deliverance...
  4. It has 5 strings, I'll give them that. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-string-bass/112771792204
  5. That's really sad news. Many years ago I was trying out a JayDee Roadie fretless bass through a brand new Trace Elliot rig at the Bass Centre when it was still in Wapping High Street in London. I was enjoying myself, making an unholy row doing all my favourite Pino and Percy Jones licks. After about 5 minutes, I happened to turn around, and Jim Rodford was standing there with his bass on, patiently waiting to try the Trace. He smiled, I apologised for keeping him waiting, but he said there was no rush! A complete gentleman, a great bass player, and a huge supporter of local music in his home town of St Albans. RIP.
  6. I have one of these, also a re-issue, because I couldn't afford one when they first came out in the 70's! They're really nicely put together, with a slightly more gutsy tone than you might expect from a Jazz bass style set-up. The neck is also chunkier and rounder at the back, more like an early Precision shape. Very comfy to play, well balanced, and it looks great. Mine hangs on the wall in my Lounge so I can just stare at it (and wonder where the last 40 years went). GLWTS.
  7. 1. Status basses. Over the years I've owned three S2s (one made for me), a Series 5000, an Empathy and an Eclipse, and sold them all. There's something about them that really appeals to me, but time and again I realised (after purchasing them, of course) that I don't really like that signature high-mid bark. Apart from the 5000, which sounded lovely, but had a string spacing you could barely get a fag paper between. I now get my graphite-based jollies with an SKC Bogart. But if anyone knows of a Kingbass MkII 5-string up for sale, I could probably still be persuaded! 2. Big cabs. I joined the "two 210s stacked on their ends" club a couple of years ago, and haven't looked back. They sound great, move plenty of air, and fit in the boot of my car. Result. Now all I need to do is wean myself off the expensive hobby of trying every D-Class head in the world with them...
  8. Oddly enough, the Mk2 is one of the Status basses that actually looks better to me WITH a headstock - to my eye, it balances out the wider body nicely! I’ve been looking for a 5-string version of this bass, but it seems they’re extremely rare. Rob said he can still make one, but unfortunately it’s beyond my budget. A lovely bass, GLWTS.
  9. January sale price reduction!
  10. New (that's pre-owned but new to me) bass day! SKC Bogart 5 string arrived yesterday, quick string change this morning and spent the day in the studio with it today. Plays great, records beautifully!

      Yeah to Bogarts! They’re excellent.

  11. I've had a couple of Wals, and it is reminiscent of them - it also does a good Andy Fraser tone soloed on the bridge pickup - great for all those 'Free' bass lines...
  12. OK, I'm game - what you got? I should add that it has to be 5 string, 35" scale, and 19mm bridge spacing...
  13. Thanks for taking the time to search for that. I did track Phil Winter's name down to Tunng a year or two ago - I wasn't sure if it was the same man, and I sent a message through their website, but never received a reply.
  14. A pre-EB Stingray that I picked up for £250 in a shop called Back Street Music in Edinburgh in 1981. The pickup was way out of alignment (no idea how it got through quality control!) but I had it messed about with over the next few years - refinished in white, scratchplate replaced with a little chrome ring round the pickup, Schaller bridge, brass nut. It was far from 'original' but it sang and played like no other bass I'd owned! Foolishly, I sold it when I couldn't make the rent just before Christmas 1985. I still have a copy of the receipt I gave the buyer - Phil Winter of Holdenhurst Avenue, Finchley N12. God knows where he (or the bass) are now, but I'd love to get it back. If anyone sees it, do let me know....
  15. Nice! Still for sale?
  16. Still here - a further price drop - treat yourself for Christmas!
  17. Thanks Acebassmusic. Ah, yes. The weener. I have some cream from the doc for that! Actually, I think it's Hungarian for veneer...
  18. Just replacing my signature, and can't find my feedback thread... sorry, am I being dim??

Nope - I had exactly the same problem and the search wouldn't find my thread either. Eventually had to go back through my email notifications to fine the link....bit pants....

You can use Google - 'search item - forum - basschat'. To find feedback it would be 'membername - feedback - basschat' ...not ideal, but it works.

Thanks everyone... as I approach the 'autumn years' I find absorbing new info a bit more of a challenge...

  19. Good point. I just thought at first glance it looked... well, a bit cheap and nasty!
