1. I was told a great story by a studio engineer who was working as an assistant on an Eric Clapton session.... They had stopped for lunch and he was told that Eric & the boys would be gone for at least a couple of hours - leaving him alone in the studio. All of Clapton's amps & guitars were set-up as they had been recording guitar parts & they had been getting a fantastic sound. This guy was a guitar player & he just couldn't resist the temptation of grabbing one of Clapton's famous Strats & having a blast through his gear at full volume - a dream come true - he too could sound just like Eric Clapton!!! Or not. "It still sounded just like me playing guitar - nothing at all like Clapton".... And I also once had the pleasure of playing with the late great jazz drummer Steve Harris. He didn't have his own kit there - but was instead using a £199 pile-of-crap junk shop kit that had been left in the corner of this skanky rehearsal studio. 5 minutes with a tuning key & it sounded like a £5,000 top-of-the-range Sonor or DW kit. All because of his skill & perfect playing technique... It didn't matter what he was playing he could make it sound good AND not complain about it either.
 2.
The seller has been in contact with me. He seems a genuine guy and is inviting me to go view it so obviously he has nothing to hide.Says some music shops have advised him the bass dates from 1978. Maybe he's been the victim at some point , and is selling what he believes to be - and had been advised is - the real deal. The problem is the serial number. It doesn't fit with any info I have. Anybody here got a more expert view?? He's asked that I let him know on which forum this is being discussed. We're in the public domain , with nothing to hide , and with the intention of protecting those who view the site - or reporting obvious scammers. I'm happy to point him in this direction.
My 10p worth.... The serial number sequencing for "S8" is notoriously confusing (used from 1977 to 1980) - with the decade/year designating decals being used randomly over those years (& also Fender would put earlier necks on newer bodies). And there were indeed "S8" series serial numbers with 6 digits (there's an example shown in 'Black & Molinaro' p77) - even though you won't see this mentioned on many of the online Fender serial number references. Also the application of the serial number decals on the headstocks was often quite 'wobbly' - with little effort made to put them on neatly.

 5.
OBBM ftw, in fact i've just given bassic cables a shout out on my albums thanks list
Dave will be getting one on ours as well! Go OBBM - you know it makes sense!
 6. This is a PDF from Blueprint Studios in Manchester - with loads of good advice for your first time in a recording studio... Have fun!

 8.
right - where's the cheapest place a tight arse like me can get a set of moulded ER-15s? I don't really fancy doing my own impressions, so anywhere I can get the impressions done in the price is good and also anybody that will colour them gratis as well is always a winner looked at sensorcom, audiorelief and hearingprotection so far
Got mine at our local Specsavers - really impressed with the service... can definitely recommend them.
 9. I've got a guitarist friend who is a very serious player (& has been for 30 years+) - has a collection of 60+ fantastic guitars. He rates his Tyler as being one of the very best things he's ever played. I'm sure you'll be a very happy camper! The only thing I struggle with is the head-stock design - for me that's f-ugly! But it could well be contributing a fair bit to the tone...who knows?
 10. Oh yes - that's so much better - very cool.... Reminds me of the lovely old Jazz bass that the guy from the Beastie Boys plays live - a stripped early 70's Jazz with tort guard:
 11. Mr Tune O Matic.... Many of you are probably aware of this US based 'character' on eBay - he sells a huge amount of very expensive vintage guitars, basses & parts. He is also the seller of a notorious refinished CAR Jazz that keeps being re-listed as a protest by it's unfortunate current owner. Just in case anyone here is tempted to buy anything off him - you should first take a look at this reply he recently gave to a question on eBay There was an even worse reply to an eBay question that some guy posted on talkbass.com a while back (I think there may be a thread about him on there) - it was unbelievably abusive. He also trades as 'find it only here' - again for very expensive vintage parts. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions about how deserving he is of any of your hard earned cash.
 12.
I'm going to need to get one. What do you use? Which is best? Do any have a headphone out?
Dave - one of the very best is the Avalon U5 - it's become an industry standard for bass in top studios. They are absolutely fantastic. And this has a headphone output. But they're about £400 new - though I got mine off eBay for £250. You should also check out anything made by Radial - all their kit is excellent 'pro' standard. Many people swear by the Radial JDI for bass - this is a VERY good passive DI (but has no headphone output). Then there are bass specific DI's like the Sansamp BDDI & the MXR M80 - lots of fans of these on Basschat. You can come & try out all of these at my place if you like?
 13. Why has that geezer on the website got an octopus wrapped around his head???
 14.
name and shame man. No two ways about it.
I would love to - but not on a website like this. As it's not me that would get the legal hassle, but the guys that run the site.
 15.
Hand-delivered by Elvis Presley riding Shergar, I've no doubt
I should have offered to swap it for my Jimi Hendrix white Strat that he played at Woodstock!
 16.
My 1961 Strat. Sold it around around 1980 for £125. Not one of my best decisions.
I did a really crap PX about 15 years ago - swapped a beautiful Wal fretless for a very dodgy Stingray. What was I thinking...
 17. Just a quick warning - I've been offered an ex-James Jamerson 1962 Precision by a very well known vintage guitar dealer. Suffice to say - this is a 100% scam. Just in case he, or any other dealers, contact anyone else on Basschat - please be advised to tell anyone offering to sell you anything like this that even if it was genuine it would have to be stolen property as Jamerson's 62 P Bass was stole from his house in 1983 whilst he was on his death bed. I'm sure that the vast majority of guys on here would know this anyway - but just in case, I'd hate to find out that somebody has been caught out by this.
 18.
I have a great idea - call Steve Rowse http://www.stevesamps.co.uk/ Hamster
+1000
 19.
Me and NWR backstage at last years Guitar Show NWR and the TE rig he was lent on the day.....nice!
And you gotta love that Burgundy Mist pre-CBS Jazz (looks like a '62) - complete with cigarette burn on the headstock. NWR - what a top guy!
 20.
sexy...
Thanks mr.sibs! I was really pleased to get a hold of black one - they seem to be pretty rare. Definitely one of the coolest looking basses I have....
 21. I really like mine - but only on certain songs that require a HUGE BASS sound. They will happily knock holes through walls. Great for a big throbbing dub sound.... and certainly not for 'twiddling' about on. As for current 'top players' that use them? Well the great Daryl Johnson uses one live when he plays with Daniel Lanois (who is also a big fan of them in the studio) & gets a fantastic tone - and then at the other end of the spectrum the guy from The Hives plays one too! I paid £1K for mine not that long ago - so I'd better review my insurance as this one looks like it's going to get well over the £2K mark!
 22.
Are these Auralex pads any good? Gimmick or really useful piece of kit? Does anyone have any experience of these? http://www.auralex.com/sound_isolation_gra...tion_gramma.asp
I've got one that I've used for recording sessions - to isolate a bass cab & guitar combos. They certainly do work & are very effective at reducing the amount of low frequencies from being transferred through the floor & tightening up a bass / guitar sound. And we got some great results with guitar combos. Though you may find that the bass sound you get is something of a disappointment - as it can make a bass cab sound like it's lacking in bass response (personally, I love feeling the whole room rumble!). There's another post here about them - I think people have had good experiences using them to get a better live sound on 'boomy' wooden stages...? Definitely a 'try before you buy'.
 23. PM sent!
 24. That's really good news if they're going to do a Skyline version! I enquired about these a few months back - & you can get them direct from Lakland customised to your spec - around $2.5K (+ duty, shipping, etc to the UK) but there was a 7 month wait at the time.... I think they're one of the coolest looking basses I've ever seen.
