Yeah £39 is closer to the USA price Bass Directs Auralex page
That price is VERY good - I paid more than that for a used one off eBay - that I got for a 'good' price compared to anywhere selling them new!
Just following on from something Bilbo said in another post. 'PLECTRUM PLAYING' Monk the the brother of Wes Montgomery was a great swing Electric Bassist, Using a pick and his Jazz bass. Any arsed horn player who is only good at blowing himself, who says 'you cant swing on electric' should take a listen to this. [ Bock to Bock ] A bit layed back. But goes into 4's at about 1-40 http://www.last.fm/music/Wes+Montgomery/_/Bock+to+Bock Monk is a bit forgotten nowdays. Garry
And he was one of the very first players to make the change from double bass to 'Fender Bass' - a true pioneer...
I've done a bit more research. Looking at the shape of the headstock, and the 1971 Gretsch catalogue, I think it may be a 6028. See http://gretschpages.com/history/memorabili...dorado-catalog/ Any body know how I might be able to get an honest market value for it, please? Steve
You could try these two UK dealers who specialise in acoustics... http://www.glennsguitars.com/ http://justgreatguitars.com/ But unfortunately I don't think it's worth a fortune - though maybe of interest to a Gretsch collector?
That is gorgeous - every ding and every knock.... History and character!
If only it could talk... I bet it could tell some great rock n roll stories!
Take a look at his sig. thats not lucky, dont what to call it really,
A little bit of luck - together with a lot of hard work, hassle, and a scarily large amount of ££££ expense!
That's stunning! Congratulations!
Thanks! Has been a long search to get this one - but very pleased with it. And has cured me of a big dose of GAS!
That's a real looker & a bit of history to boot! Is the case original? On the downside it's not as shiny as my 2008 model
Yes - that's the original brown tolex case - in very good condition for its age. Those 'choco' cases are very rare now (& brown with dark orange interior were only used in '62). And it also came with the original Fender leather strap as well...
Fantastic Did you but it here or in the USA? Dare I ask how much?
Thanks... I'm loving it lots. It was shipped here from the US a few days ago. How much? Difficult to say as there was no cash involved - it was a swap for a mint '66 Precision, that I had also got via a PX for two 70's Precision. But a similar early '62 bass would cost you a big lump of cash, especially with the original case - the 'choco' cases fetch crazy money on their own these days.
has it got FUNK scratched on it?
No! The butt of the neck looks like this though...
Where? When? How?
Where? Has been in Chicago & Detroit for last 46 years... When? But came to me... yesterday. How? Traded for my mint '66 Precision - which was a wrench to part with, but she wasn't getting played enough because it was so pristine. And I'm not a collector... & I really wanted a 60-62 slab neck Precision that I could play without worrying about it.
-
For all you vintage porn fans out there... Here she is - my latest acquisition.... a 100% original 'slab' neck 1962 Fender Precision. She's far from mint condition - but I kinda like her 'voodoo' vibe. Enjoy!
I and a number of BassChat members have been to trying to sell some really high quality stuff on the Forum and - despite price drops to levels most of us consider bargain basement - they are still not shifting. There was another thread about the credit crunch and times is tight etc. Having had no joy with my Gibson SG bass (apart from one very low PM'ed offer) I put it on eBay. It sold within 12 hours with a Buy-It-Now for £475 (as opposed to the £450 I put it on for on the Forum). The difference more than covered the fees. Message of this is, if it doesn't sell on the Forum, don't rush to cut your price. There are plenty of buyers out there for good quality kit and eBay is still a great way of accessing them.
+100 I tried repeatedly to sell a really nice Guild B-301 on here for ages for a good price - had some daft offers & 'tire kicker' comments. Then I gave up, put it on eBay & sold it straight away to a really cool guy who came & collected, & paid cash without any of the tiresome haggling nonsense. BUT - I've also sold a couple of other basses that sold straight away to other Basschat members - both were great, v.easy transactions... So as Clarky says - as popular as Basschat is - eBay gives you access to a MUCH bigger potential market... and although there may not be a buyer here, there is very likely to be a good potential purchaser on eBay. As John says: "The world is bigger than Basschat after all"
I would very much like one of those. Anyone know how the modern Japanese version shapes up? You made me listen to 'All Along the Watchtower' Again; I never realised it was a Mustang, I thought it was just what happened when Jimi played bass!
No guarantee that will make you sounds as good as Jimi! Doesn't help me!
-
I got a sweet 1966 Mustang a few months ago - really just to add to the collection (& I got it for a bargain price)... And wasn't really expecting to use it much at all - but I have to say that the 'vintage' tone you can get from these is absolutely fantastic. Wind it up through an old valve amp & it will bring tears to your eyes. Not like an old Precision or a Jazz - it's own sound & very sweet. I'm definitely a short scale fan now... Check out 'Indian Rope Man' by Julie Driscoll/Brian Auger for a fabulous 60's Mustang bass sound... And of course 'All Along The Watchtower' - with Jimi Hendrix playing a Mustang bass - one of the greatest ever bass lines & tone... Here's my 1966 (with very rare original case):
Damn shame all round, actually, as it looks like a really nice bass. Completely aside from the auction itself, do you think the finish is original - I actually thought it might've been, going by the undercoat.
Sometimes they had a white undercoat, sometimes not - & often custom colours were actually sprayed on top of a sunburst finish... But the absence of a 'paint stick' mark on a 1964 bass would definitely say to me that the finish was not original - & was in fact a later re-finish.
EDIT: This is a cached version of an auction for the same bass. It's from Italian Ebay. Make of it what you will. It's all very smart - finding this auction was very difficult, simply doing a search on Ebay didn't lead me to it. http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:CSdku_k...;cd=1&gl=pt
Good detective work Bassaussie!
He's got Bill Black's URB. I'll wager that cost him a bob or two...
I wonder who has Bill Black's '57 Precision - that he played on 'Jailhouse Rock'...? Reckoned to be one of the first major hit records to feature electric bass. Now that would be a cool bass to have...
It's probably a butchered 1960 Jazz neck or something! lol 99ster will probably buy it and get lucky again! Si
Steady! You had me going for a minute there Si! But watch this space...there may well be another mad vintage project coming soon!
