1. Defo worth it even at full price. They do tend to have an audible click between active and passive but I only run it passive with no battery and pull for a kill switch. The preamp is good btw, I just personally don't need that much choice of tone. There's plenty going on in passive mode already YMMV.
2. Nice one. I was rooting for you! I love a happy ending 🙆
3. I bought the deko version and it's bloody ace. Nothing wrong with it, came perfectly set up with the nut slots cut just right. I have D'addario tapes on it and it's so effortless to play. The side markers are dots on the usual notes, 3,5,7,etc, but are bang on the note where you actually have to play the note. Not in-between like on a Fretted. It weighs 8lbs on the nose and balances perfectly on the strap. Tuners hold tune.. Highly recommended!
4.
There's also the whole thing of music being a form of art and self expression. If you took a great painting and looked at individual brush strokes out of context, they also might look sloppy, but in the context of the whole thing they fit perfectly. A perfect clean straight line might be technically impressive but it might not be what the painting needs.
Well said!
5. Sad to hear about this. You can see on their Facebook page how well thought of he is. A very warm guy who was making new friends all the time. Far too young.
6.
Don't compromise on playability. I was the same with my first Jake. I saw something I like but the nut width was thinner than I prefer. I also prefer lacquered necks. I thought I wasn't ready to spend a lot of cash on something I had never tried before, but I thought I'd ask. It turned out that I could get the neck profile of my choosing and a lacquered neck for barely no extra cost (it was something but... it really did not amount to anything... and I think that was just the lacquer, not the neck dimensions)... So: ask. You'll have to wait around 10 weeks... but in my opinion it's worth waiting 10 weeks and getting the neck that feels right to me.
Thanks for the advice and I know you're right there. I decided to go with the Fender Japan Precision (see above post) as I played one at a gig once and loved it. At half the price of a Maruszczyk I just had to go for it. I would like a well thought out Jake in the future though. Not long til Christmas is it? 😀
7.
I had a Geddy Lee-type of neck and now I own a jake. The differences: Nut width; Geddy 38mm, Jake 40mm (like my 70's reissue Precision) Radius; Fretboard jake is more flat than Geddy Neck; Jake is deeper front tot back than the toothpick Geddy. But not as thick as my Precision's. I hope this helps
Thanks for the info. I've actually just bought a used Fender Japan 70s reissue Precision from Ishibashi in Japan for a song. It ticks all my boxes and comes in at half the price all in. Just got to wait for them to get a CITES certificate (2017 regulations and that) due to the rosewood board. I'll hopefully have a NBD eventually and I'll give a full account of how it all went. Hopefully.
8.
It doesn't actually affect the price much, just the time to get it. If you are going to be interested in getting one, do yourself a favour, find out what sort of neck you want and order it exactly like that!
Indeed! I've been trawling through the big thread and can now see on those showroom piccys that the standard neck is far too thin and slim for me. Only one way to avoid disappointment...
9. I made the mistake of venturing down the rabbit hole that is the Public Peace Website 😯 and have seen a couple of Jakes that I like the look of. The seemingly standard 40mm nut width is a bit thinner than I'm used to but I could get used to that as long as the depth front to back isn't too slim. American Standard-ish, or Geddy Lee-like? Any advice or experience will be greatly appreciated! I know that I can custom order anything with Adrian but I'm looking to keep the cost down by going with what's in stock. Cheeoz.
10.
Fretted for me, but I have a lovely '71 fretless P, too. Truth be told I'd probably sell it, but one of the bands I'm in recreates an album with a very distinctive fretless P tone. So while we're doing that, I'll keep it.
If you do ever sell it I bagsy first dibs!
11.
I used something similar but the glue wasn't great and they started sliding off their place, and some came off relatively easily. How 'solid' are these once you stick them? I have a couple of dark fingerboards I'd love to have some larger white-ish side markers on. Right now I just put a spot of tippex on them as a temporary measure
The Glotec ones stick well and haven't moved on me. I don't actually touch them as I play though as I'm a thumb on the back of the neck player rather than thumb over the top.
12. I'm using these on the side of my fretless fingerboard and they do the job great : http://www.glowtec.co.uk/glow-in-the-dark-fret-markers.htm
13.
I own more USA Stingrays than any other type of bass, but I have played many others types including Sub's and 34's. I can tell you that I have not found one non-USA Stingray that is a patch on the real thing. The build quality and options on a USA are far superior to anything achieved on a non-USA. I fear we will run around in circles regarding the sound which is subjective, but I would argue the same on that count. Case in point, this arrived yesterday.... It's a USA Stingray 4HS 'Starry Night' SLO with MHS. I'm fairly particular about my basses as some here will attest to. I would not hesitate one second to send it back if it didn't meet my expectations. Hand on heart, I can't think of a single way that this bass could be improved.
Literally took my breath away.💓Perfection. 👌
14.
nope was a different one with a slot for a j pu milled and an extra switch iirc
Really?! Do you have a link? I actually registered with them and had a good look through the classifieds but I didn't see that one.. Thanks
15. Hey thanks, I just went searching on there and it was actually the very same bass mentioned above that is in the BC classifieds being sold by Tonci! I must have looked at every used Stingray in the world that has been up online. The trail is cold. It must be under someone's bed or in the back of a wardrobe somewhere, forgotten. Funny how we get attached to things isn't it..
16. Yes I've seen that one, but ta anyway . The one I'm looking for was an '86/'87 2 band in a much more abused state than that. The last 15 years since I saw it last may not have been too kind either!
17. By the way this isn't a trick - it wasn't stolen or anything untoward, I had to sell it around 2002 to cover my rent when I lived in London. Stepney Green to be exact. So if anyone does have a Stingray (or knows of one) that matches my above description, then please know that it's safe to come out now! ✌😊
18. Just bought a P bass wiring loom off John (my second from him). Fantastic quality as before, the best - posted out the same day, packaged beautifully with clear instructions and even a lil screwdriver to tighten the solderless connections. Magnifico! Cheers John 👍
19. Hey all.. I'm after getting reunited with my old 80's Ernie Ball Stingray and just wondered if any Basschatters may actually own it now. It's a transparent red colour, rosewood board, 2 band eq, nice flame to the maple 4 bolt neck, string mutes bridge (no foam attached when I had it), added jazz pickup where the neck pickup on a jazz would be which means the jack is now on the body edge with volume/volume/treble/bass knobs, black pickguard, chips and dents around the bottom edge strap button, worn through on the forearm contour. Heavy-ish bass as I remember. We have a lot of history together so I'm keen to get her back or at least be in touch with the present owner so I can arrange first dibs if she ever comes up for sale. I don't have any pics or the serial number unfortunately (never took any notice of the SN.. Idiot.) Please help a kindred spirit for news of his old pal. Cheeoz. Si.
20. I put an Allparts P bass neck on my old Revelation RPB-65f and it fitted like a glove. Made a very good bass great. You have a ton of neck options at your disposal, don't worry.
21. Back on topic... I would go for an EMG GZR (Geezer Butler) P/J set. Loads of personality, great for any style of music and you get a quick fit wiring harness with it, so it's a really easy job.
22. Sold a new set of Smith Compressors to Paul. Easy deal with a really nice chap. Thanks mate. 👍
