Somebody on one of the diy forums did a mutron filter clone in a 1590a. Mostly surface mount components. That was just nuts!

Can't listen to your clips at the minute, but from your description try one of the filter & blend pedals. Ashdown J-lo Hyperdrive, EBS Sheehan drive or the Brimstone Audio crossover pedal. No fizz there, unless you want it!

NCD - Barefaced Retro 210 4 ohm - Story so Far....
Bigwan replied to Huge Hands's topic in Amps and Cabs
Bigwan, glad to hear you've finally got yours. I still can't believe you weren't prioritised
Was surprised at that myself! Think Alex has a quite a bit to learn when it comes to customer relations - (VERY) late delivery and repeated poor communication would make me think twice before ordering another cab from him. Unboxed my cab last night. Really pretty, but looking at some of the tolex joints on the back I can tell we're going to have peeling problems within a few years. Won't bother me as long as it sounds the part. -
Looks like they're using the normal combustion body and routing the NG2 pickup location out afterwards (although I'm assuming there - normal combustion may have exactly the same route!).

NCD - Barefaced Retro 210 4 ohm - Story so Far....
Bigwan replied to Huge Hands's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm picking up my retro 2x10 from my folks house today. Unfortunately I'll not get a chance to give it some proper welly for quite some time now. Looking forward to getting it hooked up with my Mesa Walkabout for a little tinkle though! I waited significantly longer than the OP for this cab (over 30 weeks, being conservative) so I'm hoping it lives up to expectations. -
Isn't it great that we're all different!
16.5mm string spacing. Damn. I had that on a Status once. Was too tight for me. 17.5mm (as per my Ray5) is the tightest I can manage and I prefer a bit more room than that too.
I'm in the same boat. I could probably adjust to it, but I'm immediately comfortable on 19mm spacing so 16.5mm would take quite a bit of adjustment!
That's a lot prettier to my eyes!
With a pretty price tag to match! As a previous Dingwall owner I'd like to try one of these (but would no doubt be disappointed in the ridiculously tight string spacing and pencil-thin neck - but that's Ibanez for you!)
-
Something else to consider is that the retro, as with all brand new cabs, will almost certainly not be "broken in" yet. The sound should get richer with further use (he says, expecting his own retro 2x10 next week...).

If you're happy with your peavey then wouldn't a hand truck be more appropriate?
Did you get yours Bigwan? I just posted on a thread by Jenny_Innie where she's got hers, but I got the dreaded mail to say he hadn't managed to get mine out before his Christmas break. Having to wait until January now :-(
No, I got the "January" email too. Happy Jenny got hers in time for Christmas, but a little hacked off at Alex (again) since I was first to order one of these cabs... I did say I wasn't in a hurry... but still...

Couple of questions Ryan (would PM you but I'll put them here as others might also be interested in the answers!). It's obviously a meatball filter, but what flavour of fuzz is it? Muff? Is it in the Fx loop of the filter? Defeatable? What do the switches on the left do? What do all the LEDs mean? What are the connection options? Cheers!

I think all that video proves is that you can't really decide until you play them yourself. They both sound good to me. There's a split second IN PASSING where the 3leaf IS as fat sounding as the oc2 which makes me think there could have been more of an attempt to make them sound alike, and the -2 octave on the oc2 is brought into play at one point, which makes comparison difficult since the 3leaf doesn't do it. If I didn't have a COG fuzz/octave combo due I'd be tempted to try the 3leaf. Tom's octave has similar sound shaping options to the 3leaf, but without the switching flexibility as standard - something Tom could rectify in a custom build no doubt.

My Retro 2x10 should be finished this week so may have it for Christmas break!

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Bigwan replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
In hindsight, I think that the phosphor bronze strings that came stock on it sound fine. The Fender flatwounds are a bit more mellow, but lack a bit of the presence (may be misusing the word) that the phosphors have. The phosphors don't have that horrible twangy sound that many acoustic basses have, it's a nice warm sound. But, I really dislike string noise, so the flatwounds are definitely staying on. The buzz is worse with the flatwounds on. It's now showing up particularly on the A on the 'second fret' of the top G string, and the B of the A string. This indicates a neck that is too straight, I believe. I've taken a quarter turn out of the truss rod as of a couple of hours ago. Still buzzing. I'll check again tomorrow. I must admit that I still think that the nut is cut too deep, but will try adjusting the truss rod further first. I can see some relief in the neck, I believe. I suspect that adding enough relief to cure the buzz will give me too high an action further up the neck, but I'll see. I still haven't tried the plugged in sound. i put a battery in it, and the tuner works fine and has an easy to read display. It's better than I expected a built-in tuner to be. I've no idea what the 'phase' button is supposed to do. EDIT: Ah, phase buttons are common on electro-acoustics. My Ovation six string doesn't have one. They invert the phase of the electric output. If the bass was being both DI'd and mic'd up at the same time, the distance of the mic from the body might mean that the two signals are out of phase, and hitting the phase button might give a better sound with less objectionable comb filtering.
Nothing to do with your nut. Once you 'fret' a note, the nut depth has zero bearing. If the open string was buzzing that would point to a low nut slot. -
I would LOVE to make a bass guitar like this!
How cool! ? http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2014/12/glow-tables-by-mike-warren/
Some builders are bound to be pretty open to doing this sort of thing. When you consider that some top woods need epoxy filled to be viable for use anyway (buckeye burl is one I've seen this done on) it's not that big a departure... -
On paper, your thinking is ok, and the reason why 115 and 210 was a good mix was because the power ratings were around the same at 300w per cab. But..as others have said, this may not work with your models so best to get advice or try them first.
What's this!? JTUK in "first non-derogatory post on a Barefaced thread in ages" shocker! Edit to add: ;-)
