1. This one? http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/0117-finn-4-string/ Purdy!
 2.
Wals are lovely but have you tried these yet? Pedulla Pentabuzz (loads of sustain with lots of bright mwah) Ashbory bass (Rubbery sound a little like an upright and very even response) Godin Acoustibass (light weight and very resonant) NS Wav upright (long scale add huge depth and bloom to the notes) All of them are standard setting fretless instruments in their own way.
Oo thanks matey, Pedulla no but I do like the sound when Timothy B Schmidt of the Eagles breaks his out - would like to try one! Ashbury - yeah tried one, couldn't do the short scale thing, felt weird but sounded ok Godin - not tried one of these either... NS NXT - got one and love it, use it for emulating upright sounds, gets close enough for live use My try list is now Wal fetless 4 and Pedulla Pentabuzz 4...and a Godin if I can find one
 3.
When I'm in Manchester you're welcome to try my Fretless Wal 4.
That's magic, cheers matey
 4.
I edited the post above to include the bit about the low power option. Don't know if you have seen it or not. May prevent this situation should you play in a similar environment again!
"I've just read that Line6 has an option on their transmitter that reduces the power down to 3.3mW. The added bonus is that with less power, you can get more devices in the same RF spectrum without running inter modulation issues and of course, much longer battery life. If you aren't running about all over the place, I would highly recommend that you take the power down to avoid such problems in future." Oo, gonna check in the manual whether the G50 can do this!
 5.
Sometimes the path of least resistance is best.
yeah I didn't want to tick him off, I could make everyone's life easier at the expense of some small convenience for me...not really an issue and exactly why I carry a backup cable
 6.
The reason he poo-pooed it is that he/she wanted to eliminate any risk (even if it could be fixed with a channel switch) to loss of control of the PA mix. Once bitten and all that. That kinda makes his need greater than going wireless - especially if he is using a console-less mixer.
which is why I didn't press the issue and just reached for my spare cable to make him happy...'keep the sound guy sweet' and all that
 7.
Yes - you should have said to the sound guy, get yourself a 5 GHz router. - It's because his wireless router will have been running on 2.4Ghz and your data streams were not playing nicely with his. You should have been able to switch channels though to avoid the problem.
cheers matey I presumed there'd be a fix for it cos it seems like 90% of the wireless systems out in playland are line6...I suggested switching channels and he 'poo-pooed' the idea...
 8. oh they're both so pretty, darn you Alan, darn you to heck
 9. Had a funny thing at a festival this weekend just gone...the sound guy was mixing via ipad and it went a bit screwy so he asked if anyone had the line6 digital wireless cos it always interferes with his ipad connection...I switched back to wired for that show and he was happy...me less so...anyone else had this?
 10.
What you got to remember, is that the great recorded tone that you are hearing, especially in modern recordings, have been eq and post processed to feck in the studio. It may be worth experimenting with some outboard if you are struggling to get a great core sound... it may be that your brain is hankering for something more processed. I know that there will be people going on about "pure tone" but at the end of the day, the resulting sound is the result of the component parts... so maybe book a day at a studio with a competent engineer to help craft your tone so you can figure out what you are looking to do to your core tone maybe?
good point, cheers matey. I do now use an MXR bass compressor and that gets me much closer to the basic sound I'm after, it may be that one of the basses I used to have would have benefitted from that comp and so could have been the sound in my head...dammit :/
 11.
There are only two Uber fretless one in Germany and the one I have so the chances are not great I am afraid. I am however building one for stock and the to have at the London show.
oo if the stock fretless one happened to be unlined 34" scale 4 string and recurve shaped (headless or otherwise) that might be very tempting indeed...
 12.
I'm going to have to say Wal too... but that's probably no surprise. I think the fretless Wal tone is even more distinctive than the fretted one. I have not however tried one of Alan's fretless basses with the multicoil pickups... I would expect these to be of a similar standard and also half the price / build time.

Also; I once briefly owned a cort curbow fretless... don't buy one of those
Haha cheers buddy I really would love to try a fretless Wal, it'd be even better if it was next to an ACG Uber fretless so I could a/b them but tbh I just wanna try a Wal and I'd love to try a Uber fretless too... Cort curbow bleugh
 13.
Yes, or at least a contender. Much like the Middle Ages, there's a lot of argument over who is actually The King by right, but as I found out recently having tried almost every other brand, there's a reason Wal have the reputation they have.
Thanks matey ...and so I need to find someone/somewhere near-ish to Sheffield that has a fretless one that I can try even if just to rule it out...probably 4 string, mk1...
 14.
Filter pre-amps work particularly well with fretless. If you are ever up my way my own two basses are fretless you are welcome to try them out. An Uber Recurve 4 and a Krell 6.
oo actually yeah I did love the clarity of the uber I tried when you came down to Manchester that time...must find a reason to be passing Moffatt...
 15. I've had numerous fretless basses over the years (Warwick, Fender J and P, G&L, Stingray5, ACG etc) and while they've all had good points, none have been perfect... ...they've all had some detractor, the active ones had good punch but were too 'clicky' and sterile, the passive J was ok, my current '78 P is the nicest so far but lacks a bit of that magic swell to the notes and also isn't quite reliable enough for studio use as the electrics aren't quite noiseless and while it sounds stunning for stage use it's just not quite there for studio use somehow... I remember trying a Wal fretless many years ago and I'm wondering, is this the king of fretless basses for both live and studio work? I know Pino used an old Stingray fretless and got some very pleasing sounds out of it but I've never met a fretless ray that did it for me... Has anyone near Sheffield got a fretless that they swear by that I could come and meet as I'm getting more studio work offers at the minute and fretless is really working well in the style of song on offer... ...let the bc wisdom download commence...
 16.
I was wondering whether I could do the same with my JDI
it's worth a try, should be line level signal that comes out of the 'slave out'...
 17.
You micing it to go out front?
No mate, usually run a line from the slave out to an active Radial Pro48 di box, takes the juicy valve pre signal and sends it to the desk. Given the opportunity I'd add a mic too but the slave out does give pleasant sounds out front
 18. Just bought Julian's SPB-1 pups, exactly as described, very lovingly packaged and very swiftly posted, spot on, absolutely no issues here whatsoever
 19. Whenever I use my rig (which is every show we play unless I'm pressed into using something else which I resist most strongly!) I get envious looks from the other guys on the bill and compliments from the sound guy for the sweet sound he gets at the desk and out front. Just a glorious sounding beast So good in fact that I now have a second obc115cb for a stack of awesomeness mwahahaha
 20. Sad times matey, you were well chuffed when you landed that rig I love mine and it's going nowhere! ...have a free bump for a bass rig that gets constant compliments from audience/bands/sound-guys!
 21. Shame you're nowhere near Sheffield or I'd have been sorely tempted to investigate further....thankfully you're in Cardiff... Got a real hankerin for an acoustic db...
 22. hiya bud is this still available? would you ship it to Sheffield?
